I couldn't prevent the professor from becoming a Maverick. I failed to protect him. But I'm going to fulfill my duty as a bodyguard now.
~ Shield Sheldon

Shield Sheldon is a minor antagonist who debuted in Mega Man X6. Originally named Shieldner Sheldon, he was a former security guard, but committed suicide after his master went mad forcing him to kill them and the Maverick Hunters deemed his former actions as criminal. However, he was revived by Gate in order to be given a second chance to protect his master.

Character Description[]

Personality[]

Shield Sheldon is a loyal bodyguard who's devoted to his job. He has immense respect for protecting others including his creator, Gate. He has his own sense of justice but is somewhat of a vigilante, killing others who become corrupted as Maverick. Shield Sheldon is also suicidal, especially when he fails at his duties believing his life isn't worth it if he's useless to others.

Physical Appearance[]

Shield Sheldon resembles a man whose shoulders carry clam shells. The shells are so large that Sheldon can fit inside their interior on his own. He wears pink and white armour, white shorts, black leggings, and pink boots. His skin is a pale yellow colour and his hair is pink.

His weapon[]

Shield Sheldon wields the Guard Shell. This creates an energy shield that can reflect enemy projectiles. X can position the shield at whatever position in relation to his body he sees fit, and can change it by deactivating it and reactivating in a different position.

Biography[]

Sheldon was once a security guard built by Gate to protect others Throughout his career, he took on many clients and fulfilled them to the best of his abilities, earning respect among the others. One day, he took on a client named Dr. Jim, who was a laser researcher. However, he noticed that he went Maverick and became a threat to the others, and he decided to take upon his own hands to kill him before harm was done. The Maverick Hunters eventually investigated the murder and falsely concluded that Shield Sheldon did this as a Maverick. Ashamed of his actions and accusation, he decided to commit suicide, deeming himself as useless.

During the Nightmare Phenomena, he was revived by Gate as a Nightmare Investigator. He was stationed by the Laser Research Facility where the previous incident occurred. He swore to and X and Zero that this time he will fulfill his duties by protecting Gate, even if it would cost him his life yet again. Shield Sheldon remained loyal to Gate and his duties, even during his last moments.

Battle[]

Shield Sheldon teleports around in battle. He can block attacks with his shells, but many of his attacks force him to detach them, rendering his body vulnerable. He takes critical damage from getting hit with Metal Anchors, which can break his shells and send him flying across his room. Upon defeat, Shieldner will surrender his Guard Shell.

Attacks[]

Shield Sheldon can take off his shells, throw them at X, and call them back to his next position at the end of the attack (which may change). He can also retreat into his shell which bounces around the room in a figure-eight pattern. He can also create a copy. If that happens, Sheldon and his copy teleport to the top of the screen and throw their shells towards the bottom. Upon losing half his health, Shieldner gains two new attacks. He can turn on his Guard Shell, generating four barriers around his body to block projectile attacks while attempting to ram X. He can also generate four clam shells that go to the corners of the screen. Shieldner will hide inside one and then dash to another, repeating the dash several times. If he manages to successfully tackle X, Sheldon will hurt him. Sheldon may teleport into another shell to change his dash's starting position.

Dialogue[]

Pre-battle[]

  • X: Shield Sheldon? I thought it was you.
  • Shield Sheldon: Of course.
  • X: I'm very sorry about this case. If only I had been there in time.
  • Shield Sheldon: Don't be sorry. I couldn't fulfill my role as a bodyguard, that's all.
  • X: You had been protecting the professor. When the professor became a Maverick, there was no other way. Our officers misinterpreted your action and you were hunted as a Maverick. And then you retired yourself. That was so unfortunate...
  • Shield Sheldon: I couldn't prevent the professor from becoming a Maverick. I failed to protect him. But I'm going to fulfill my duty as a bodyguard now. He gave me a second chance... I'll protect him, even though I may have to sacrifice my life for it! Come on! X!

In Battle[]

  • Guard Shell:
    • "You're naïve!"
    • "You can't escape!"
  • Shell Game Attack:
    • "Try and keep up with me!"
    • "Time to settle this!"
  • Hit with a Metal Anchor: "Hey!?"
  • Defeated: "How... decisive!"

Trivia[]

  • Shield Sheldon, Gate, and the final boss are the only bosses that cannot be damaged normally, as they have several conditions for taking damage. In their case, Shieldner and the final boss shield their bodies, but occasionally expose themselves to attack with some of their attacks. Shieldner Sheldon, however, is easier to handle since more of his attacks disable his defense.
  • Etymology: Shieldner Sheldon earned his name from the term "shellfish" (which refers to his basis, the clam) and the normal name Sheldon.
  • In the Music Gallery of the Mega Man X Legacy Collection games, Shieldner Sheldon uses his Japanese name.
