Shinobu Uchiyama is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito manga The Back Alley. She is the sociopathic 14-year-old daughter of the landlady of the apartment that high-school student Ishida stays at.
When she was a young child, she once played around in the titular back alley that neighbored her family's apartment, and became very territorial when she grew attached to it. She had killed three little children who were roughly the same age as her when she had found out that they were playing in the back alley, and became increasingly grew fond of using the alleyway as a killing ground when her father fenced off the area following the murders. After discovering that the souls of those she had killed had attempted time and time again to enact their revenge on her, but can't due to how the alleyway is fenced up, she had also taken sadistic pleasure in torturing them by leaving taunting, vulgar graffiti on the alley's walls.
Biography[]
Ishida rents a room with Mrs. Uchiyama and her daughter Shinobu, and is surprised when he sees that the back alley next door is closed off. As he falls asleep, he hears the laughing voices of children in the alley, but sees no one there when he tries to call out to tell them to be quiet. After this incident, he tries to tell Shinobu about it, but she convinces him that it's just an echo. The following night, Ishida hears a deep voice calling for Shinobu from the alley.
The man who made the voice informs Ishida that the reason that the alley was closed off due to the murder of three children that occured there, claiming that he found a secret underground hatch in the area where the bodies were kept. The man also claims that he saw the ghosts of the murdered children in the window overlooking the alleyway, which is hidden by a bookshelf in Shinobu's apartment.
After Ishida uncovers the secret window, he climbs down to the alleyway to find the silouettes of three children, two teenagers, and one adult marked in blood, violent, obscene graffitti on the walls, as well as a metal hatched door that is locked. Ishida breaks the lock and finds all of the missing bodies, and decides to climb back up into the window to call the police.
As Ishida climbs up the rope, Shinobu stabs Ishida's hand, making him lose his grip and fall on the concrete below. Shinobu then reveals that she was the one that was responsible for the deaths that occured in the alleyway, killing off any schoolmates that played in the territory, which led to her father blocking off the area. She then decided to use the alleyway as a secret spot to carry out the murders of people she disliked, such as two of her classmates, whom she lured into the alleyway and killed violently. Eventually she decided to kill her own father when he was starting to reveal the true nature of his daughter to others.
For years, many of her victims have attempted to return from the dead, materializing as the blood-stained sillouettes on the alley's walls, and kill Shinobu for all that she's done. Unfortunately, they couldn't carry this out, as the alleyway was blocked off, and the only means of escaping was through the secret window, which can only be accessed via the rope. When Shinobu discovered this fact, she wrote the obscene graffiti in order to mock them for their predicaments.
When Ishida dies from his injuries, Shinobu attempts to climb down to the alleyway in order to lock up Ishida's body in the hatch. Due to the stab to Ishida, which also partially cut the rope, she falls down into the alleyway when it snaps, trapping her there for the night. Shinobu is terrified when she realizes that the souls of those that she killed can now finally go through with their planned revenge after so many years of being imprisoned there.
