Shirō Iori is a major antagonist, later protagonist, of the anime Kill la Kill, serving as Sewing Club President at Honnouji Academy under Student Body President Satsuki Kiryūin. Although not a member of her Elite Four, he is still a member of her Student Council and thus is granted a Three-Star Goku Uniform like the Elite Four, Tailor's Regalia, as he's in charge of making the Goku Uniforms for the students of the school, including the Elite Four, Student Club Presidents, and one-star rank students.
He was voiced by Yūji Ueda in the Japanese version, and Todd Haberkorn in the English dubbed version.
Appearance[]
Shirō is a fairly slim individual, although not very tall (evidenced in that he appears a few inches shorter than Satsuki). He has long, yellow-blond hair that goes down to his upper back, tied back in a ponytail while two long, split bangs frame either side of his face. He wears a pair of oval-shaped glasses, and has golden eyes. He is also always seen wearing a transparent orange mask that covers the bottom half of his face.
As a student of the academy and President of the Sewing Club, Shirō dons a Three-Star Goku Uniform. His uniform takes the form of a long, white lab-coat whose ends touch the ground, with two black stars appearing on either flap. Underneath this he wears a black turtleneck and pants, along with black boots.
After joining with Nudist Beach, he appropriately loses a bit of his clothing. He continues to wear his mask, but now wears a regular labcoat held together at the waist rather than his former Two-Star. He has also stopped wearing his turtleneck and pants under his coat, and now wears thick, black boots on his feet.
Personality[]
Shirō appears to be a very serious, stern individual. He is constantly seen with a frown, and has only once been seen smiling. However, he does seem to show concern when his superiors (namely Satsuki) are experiencing difficulties.
Biography[]
As his uncle Mitsuzo serves as Satsuki's personal butler, Iori gets in Satsuki's inner circle pretty well, becoming the Sewing Club President at Honnouji Academy. He is normally seen in his Three-Star Goku Uniform, and wears a mask over his mouth and nose, possibly for safety due to the work he does in making the Goku Uniforms. When Satsuki's younger sister she presumed dead, Ryūko Matoi, arrives at Honnouji Academy looking for answers to the death of her father Isshin Matoi, she soon is able to defeat the Boxing Club President after acquiring the Kamui Senketsu. When she then succeeds in taking down the Tennis Club President as well, Satsuki is forced to dawn her own Kamui, Junketsu, to confront Ryūko. After Ryūko is able to defeat Uzu Sanageyama and destroy his Blade Regalia, Uzu tasks Iori with sewing his eyes shut for his rematch with Ryūko in his new-and-improved Blade Regalia MK. II. Later, when Ryūko faces the Elite Four one at a time to gain a battle with Satsuki, before Ryūko can battle Uzu again in his Blade Regalia MK. II, they are interrupted by the Grand Couture of REVOCS Corporation, Nui Harime. Iori is horrified when Nui easily destroys Uzu's Blade Regalia MK. II by pulling out the Banshi, which is next to impossible to remove due to where it is woven into the Goku Uniform.
After Nui is forced to leave Honnouji Academy by Satsuki and banned from returning, Iori is tasked with upgrading the Goku Uniforms with the data gathered from battling Ryūko and the other events Satsuki held at the academy to weed out the weaklings in the student body. When Satsuki later finds Ryūko about to be killed by Nui after she destroyed Senketsu, Satsuki forces Nui off the scene under threat of killing her if she didn't, before taking Senketsu's pieces to have Iori weave into the Goku Uniforms for her raid trip against the other schools in Japan, which was merely the bait to lure out Nudist Beach and take out their HQ. After that, Iori helps prepare for the big festival to welcome Satsuki's mother Ragyo to the academy, but that was merely bait for the trap. When Satsuki reveals her true colors and attacks Ragyo, Iori takes his Sewing Club members to take out the Primordial Life Fiber at the Kiryuin mansion. Despite it appearing that the plan worked, Iori discovers that the Primordial Life Fiber survived, and is forced to retreat before it can retaliate against him, with his uncle also retreating with him and rescuing many of his Sewing Club members in the process during the withdrawal, including Iori himself after being injured. After Satsuki is captured by Ragyo, Iori is forced to retreat and take up arms with Nudist Beach alongside the Elite Four to battle Ragyo's COVERS and save as many lives as possible from them.
After a month of warfare, little progress has been made. However, when Satsuki is able to bust out of Honnouji Academy when Ragyo and Nui are distracted fighting a Ryūko blinded by rage at discovering herself a Life Fiber-human hybrid, Iori is glad to be reunited with Satsuki, only to then be attacked by Ryūko, brainwashed by Ragyo and wearing Junketsu, as she attacks Nudist Beach's flagship, the Naked Sun. After Mako and Senketsu manage to get her to fight off the brainwashing and rip Junketsu off of herself, while Ryūko fights Nui and takes back the Rending Scissors while cutting off and permanently destroying Nui's arms and sparing her life, leaving Nui to collapse into a psychotic breakdown, Satsuki pins down Junketsu as it tried to limp away, and soon has Iori contain it until he can effect repairs on it. Once repaired, he infuses it with a mixture of Senketsu's Life Fibers, Ryūko's blood, and Satsuki's blood, rendering it more cooperative to Satsuki, before activating his Tailor's Regalia to begin creating Goku Uniforms at a rapid pace single-handedly with help from Elite Four member Hōka Inumuta, thus granting the Elite Four new Three-Star Goku Uniforms, the student club presidents, like Mako Mankanshoku, their Two-Star Goku Uniforms, and also those for the One-Star students.
Together, they attack Ragyo and the Primordial Life Fiber as she is on her way to Honnouji Academy to launch her endgame, and while they initially appear to succeed, Nui finishes Ragyo's Kamui, Shinra-Koketsu, and absorbing Rei into it, Ragyo disables all the Goku Uniforms, including Junketsu and Senketsu. However, when Senketsu and Ryūko attack separately and individually, they manage to knock Rei out of Ragyo and Shinra-Koketsu, allowing Iori and the others to use their Goku Uniforms again, and together, Nudist Beach commanders Aikurō Mikisugi and Tsumugu Kinagase and Elite Four member Ira Gamagōri are able to destroy Ragyo's transmitter, while Ryūko and Satsuki deal a crippling blow to Ragyo. Refusing to admit defeat, Ragyo has Nui commit suicide, using her Life Fibers to revive the Primordial Life Fiber, which in turns heals Ragyo and Shinra-Koketsu, allowing her to head into space to still launch her endgame. Iori and the other students give up their Goku Uniforms to Ryūko to power up Senketsu, and she is able to go into space and defeat Ragyo, absorbing Shinra-Koketsu and calling off the endgame, saving the Earth. Ragyo commits suicide out of spite by crushing her heart, while Ryūko is protected from reentry by Senketsu, who sacrifices himself to protect her as he was already disintegrating from absorbing Shinra-Koketsu, overloading himself. Iori is among those who aid Satsuki in ensuring Ryūko lands safely back on Earth, and is relieved to see she's alright afterwards.
Two weeks later, Iori is helping to prepare for the closure of Honnouji Academy now that it served its purpose, only to find it under attack from an evil clone of Satsuki in Junketsu and the Elite Four in their original Three-Star Goku Uniforms. After Ryūko and the real Elite Four defeat the evil clones, Ryūko is given the Rending Scissors back to stop the giant mecha that the academy had been turned into by Rei, seeking revenge on Satsuki and Ryūko for Nui and Ragyo's deaths, unaware of their suicidal intentions. As the island the academy and Honno City rest on sinks into Tokyo Bay, Iori is among those helping evacuate the students and everyone else from the island. When Satsuki appears with Rei and commands to make room for her on the boat, Iori and the Elite Four comply with no arguments.

When Satsuki then gives her final command as Student Body President to salute the sinking Honnouji Academy as a final show of respect, Iori does so alongside his uncle and Rei, as do the Elite Four and the rest of the students.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Natural Capabilities
- Expert Sewing Skills - As the President of the Sewing Club, Iori possess extensive knowledge in the intricacies of Life Fibers. From this, he has developed multiples uses for and against them. He is the developer of the Goku Uniforms and has developed several versions and upgrades of them over the course of the series. Also he has developed a few means to restrain Life Fiber-based creations and later a means to extract humans from the COVERS. He also has high knowledge on how to alter and restrain a Kamui outfit as seen with Junketsu. Overall his knowledge of Life Fibers and sewing skills appear to be second only to those of the Kiryūin clan.
- Three-Star Goku Uniform:
- Tailor's Regalia (Atsurae no Sō)
A unique, Three-Star Goku Uniform. When activated, Iori becomes clad in a dark red cloth of sorts that extends far past his feet, giving a wraith-like appearence. He gains four mechanical arm-tentacles that are attached to his back. His face also becomes covered by a mask of sorts, resembling a gas mask.
- Enhanced Sewing Skills: When active, Tailor's Regalia allows Iori to produce mass amounts of Goku Uniforms in short timespans, as seen when he managed to produce several hundreds of Goku Uniforms in a very short timespan, even the Three-Star Uniforms for the Four Devas. Not only did he manage to mass produce them, but actually created enhanced versions of the same uniforms for all of their respective users.
Trivia[]
- Shirō's uniform is unique in that it is the only Two-Star Goku Uniform so far not to have any red elements in it. This can be justified by the fact that he wears a Three-Star uniform later in the series, though it is unknown if it is the same uniform he used to wear before the COVERS takeover.
- Shirō's 3-Star Goku Uniform Tailor's Regalia bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Image Comics' Spawn.
- Although the four mechanical arms may seem to be derived from Marvel villain Doctor Octopus, it is more likely a take on Spawn's chains.
- Yūji Ueda, the Japanese voice actor for Shirō is the same voice actor as Lee Sampson from Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door.
- Todd Haberkorn, the English voice actor for Shirō is the same voice actor as Android 19 from Dragon Ball Z Kai.
