~ Shiver |
Shiver Hohojiro is a major antagonist in the story mode of Splatoon 3, Return of the Mammalians. She is a member of the idol trio Deep Cut, who host the Anarchy Splatcast and create music but behind the stage, she, Frye, and Big Man loot the human ruins outside of the Splatlands for relics to sell, hoping to use the profits to give to the poor while keeping a few for themselves. This puts her at odds with the new Agent 3 and Squidbeak Splatoon, who trespass on Deep Cut's looting ground of Alterna, making her and her colleagues believe that they plan to steal the treasures for their own gain, including three large pieces of scrap they guard.
In the finale of the game, Shiver and the rest of Deep Cut confront the Squidbeak Splatoon and demand for the scrap to be returned, and are surprised when Agents 1 and 2/ Callie and Marie agree and give them the scrap. Together, they assist in helping Agent 3 to defeat Mr. Grizz and prevent the spread of the Fuzzy Ooze.
She is voiced by Anna Sato.
Appearance[]
Shiver is an androgynous-looking young Octoling woman, with mid-length blue tentacles that unlike most Octolings, end in serrated edges, with one tentacle covering her left eye and wearing a hachimaki-like headdress on one of her suction cups. Her face is fairly oval-shaped, with a small nose and her right ear is pierced with shark tooth-like ear piercings. Her pupils are red with the typical Octoling infinity-shaped irises, but her eye-marks (which all Octolings possess) are very thin and resemble eyeliner, along with red eyeshadow. Her fingers are also pigmented red at the tips, and she also possesses a bright red tongue.
Shiver wears a transparent purple shawl held together by a silver charm and red string, as well as a sarashi-esque chest wrap underneath. She wears black leggings with two slashes on her right thigh resembling shark gills, as well as wearing tabi-like shoes with wedge heels. She also wears a kitsune-like shark mask at times, and is also frequently seen holding a white fan emblazoned with her family crest in blue. In her youth, Shiver wore her hair in a ponytail using rope similar to her headdress, her school’s uniform modified into a crop top and dress, as well as white shoes.
Personality[]
Shiver is an elegant and cool-headed Octoling, as shown by her extravagant appearances when she introduces herself, frequently using dramatic expressions and motions, frequently by using her fan. She also seems to be somewhat arrogant, laughing loudly during her introduction at the Squidbeak Splatoon and does mock Frye for her incompetence during Salmon Run shifts, and during the Pokemon X Splatoon Splatfest, she does express her certainty in winning thanks to her previous two victories in the past Splatfests. Shiver is also somewhat of a perfectionist, sending Big Man back to the drawing board several times while composing Anarchy Rainbow as well as keeping an exact timing of when she lost a battle at the last second. She is also rather greedy, with her hobby being counting money and when Deep Cut was first formed, she charged her clients extremely high prices for the band to make songs for them.
Despite all this, Shiver is shown to genuinely care for her bandmates. She also seems somewhat insecure with her cool and perfect image, being frustrated when she can't defeat Agent 3 in her boss fight, as well as seeming rather clumsy in actuality, dropping her smokebomb and blowing herself up in her boss exit. This is further exemplified in her Tableturf dialogue, in which she seems elated to win and begs for an opportunity to redeem herself if she loses, showing that she lacks confidence in winning and is scared of tarnishing her reputation. Shiver also admits in the Power VS. Wisdom VS. Courage Splatfest that she is unable to properly understand her own strengths and weaknesses. However Shiver is also more mature than her bandmates as she prefers predictability in contrast to their chaotic natures, and is one of the only people who actually listens to Sheldon's ramblings on weapons.
Biography[]
Background[]
Shiver descends from the Hohojiro clan, a clan of Octoling shark users, having 3 siblings just like her bandmates Frye and Big Man, being the youngest of her siblings if her family tree on her Sunken Scroll is interpreted in the English style, unlike them, who are the eldest siblings in their families. Growing up, Shiver became acquaintances with her future bandmates Frye and Big Man thanks to their clans always getting together, but she only became closer to them after the three of them decided to form the band Deep Cut in middle school, with Shiver and Frye being the vocalists and Big Man helping with instrumentals. While initially starting small by making songs for simple clients such as schoolmates and a bowling alley, Deep Cut would gain attention thanks to their musical talent.
Famed for their rowdiness and chaotic nature, Deep Cut won the support of the Splatlanders and were nominated to host the Anarchy Splatcast. This would inspire Shiver and her bandmates to decide to give back to the community by looting the surrounding human ruins for artefacts and scrap to sell, giving the profits to the poor while keeping little for themselves.
Splatoon 3[]
Shiver and the rest of Deep Cut first appear in the opening Anarchy Splatcast of the game, announcing the disappearance of the Great Zapfish, expressing concern over it vanishing as without it, Splatsville would eventually run out of power. While she doesn't appear in the Crater segment of the game, she does appear along with Big Man and Frye in a cutscene, wearing their masks and watching over the new Agent 3, Cap'n Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio with suspicion after the latter's boss fight collapses the crater floor, exposing Alterna underneath.
Shiver and her bandmates appear at the end of the first section of Alterna: Future Utopia Island, wearing their masks before discarding them and introducing themselves, warning the Squidbeak Splatoon to back off from their looting grounds, with Shiver laughing evilly in the background. The trio blow themselves up and leave when the Squidbeak refuse.
Shiver appears as the final boss of the Site 3: Landfill Dreamland. She hops down on a stage surrounded by her ink in a huge room of cabinets, lowering a cage around the area along with her. She compliments the new Agent 3's taste in treasure, but claims that they are too delicate to claim it. However, after no response from the agent, Shiver remarks that she'll have to teach them some manners and summons her shark Master Mega, riding on top of him, starting her boss fight. In her first phase, Master Mega will attack by flipping out of the ink, sending jets of ink at Agent 3 similar to a Splatana, as well as occasionally swimming through the land and striking from below like a Maws. The agent must continuously ink the shark, and during his Maws-esque attack, can choose to throw Smallfry into his mouth, stunning him and allowing for more inking until he crawls back into the ink ocean. Anyways, once Master Mega is fully inked, Shiver is thrown off and stunned, allowing Agent 3 to splat her.
Shiver respawns on a respawn centre Master Mega wears on his head. She notes that Agent 3's tougher than she anticipated, and tells Master Mega that he needs to really focus, starting her second phase. In this phase, Master Mega is faster, and gains an other attack where Shiver summons 4 columns of ink, which he hops around on before landing on one of them and blasting a powerful, horizontal stream of ink, afterwards he leaves his mouth open which Agent 3 can throw Smallfry into, stunning him again. Once again, Agent 3 completely inks Master Mega and throws Shiver off his back, splatting her again.
Shiver respawns, and is frustrated that Agent 3 hasn't been defeated yet. She orders Master Mega to get serious, threatening him if he doesn't and starts the third phase of her boss fight. Master Mega is even faster, with his ink jet being enhanced so that he shoots 3 beams of ink instead. He also gains a new attack where he rushes at Agent 3 with his mouth open, which, like with any opportunity when his mouth is open, they can choose to throw Smallfry in and stun him. Shiver is thrown off Master Mega again after he's completely inked and splatted. Shiver respawns, exhausted, but tells Agent 3 that this isn't the last they'll see of Deep Cut, before planning to throw a smoke bomb for her dramatic exit. However, she accidentally drops the bomb and it rolls off Master Mega, exploding them off into the sky.
Shiver and the rest of Deep Cut appear again after Agent 3, Callie, Marie and the Captain all assist in using the scrap Deep Cut were guarding to build a lawnmower-like device, which the Captain uses to trim away all the Fuzzy Ooze surrounding the space shuttle launch station where Cap'n Cuttlefish is being held, collapsing from injury or exhaustion afterwards. They demand that the device is handed over to them, to which Marie obliges as they have finished using it. Shiver and her bandmates are shocked but pleased, thanking the Squidbeak Splatoon and explaining their motives, leading the Squid Sisters to gain a respect for them. Afterwards, they join Agent 3's party and follow them up the launch platform where they encounter Mr. Grizz and a seemingly dead and dehydrated Cuttlefish. As he explains his motives, Mr. Grizz blasts off into space on the rocket so Deep Cut all assist in allowing Agent 3 to give chase, with Shiver lending Master Mega as transport for Agent 3 to ride Frye's ink whirlpool all the way up to space while Big Man lends them a space helmet. Cuttlefish is also fortunately revived after the Captain sheds a small tear and rehydrates him.
Together with Frye, Big Man, Callie and Marie, and DJ Octavio, Shiver performs the Calamari Inktation 3MIX during the final phase of Mr. Grizz's bossfight, empowering Smallfry with marine life energy and transforming it into Hugefry, allowing it to hold him off while Agent 3, riding on DJ Octavio's mech, vacuums up the Fuzzy Ooze before launching it all back, blowing up the rocket and sending the Ursine Anomaly into orbit and to his defeat.
Afterwards, Shiver and Deep Cut can be found back at Splatsville announcing the Great Zapfish's return, albeit with a slightly different appearance. They are currently under the Squid Sisters' employment, making music together and if Agent 3 zooms in on them with the camera function in their studio, Shiver, Frye and Big Man will smile and wave at them.
Trivia[]
- There was much debate about Shiver's gender prior to the release of Splatoon 3, as not only does she have a androgynous appearance, she is never referred to with any pronouns in the game's trailers, demos, and promotional videos. In terms of who she is in the English releases of the game, she was confirmed to be female by a Nintendo employee.
- Shiver's singing style is reminiscent of traditional Japanese singing, which her voice actress, Anna Sato is said to have a background in. Shiver's exclamations during her parts in the live performance of "Anarchy Rainbow" also resemble kakegoe, a type of shouting frequently used in traditional Japanese performances such as kabuki.
- Her behaviour and speech style is also based off the Kamigata (Kyoto) style of rakugokas, traditional Japanese comic storytellers who specialise in telling stories using fan movements and head tilts, with the Kamigata style also being frequently accompanied with musical accompaniment and being less elegant than the Edo (Tokyo) style, aligning with the chaotic theme of the game.
- Continuing her references to Kyoto, in the Japanese version of Splatoon 3 Shiver talks in a Kyoto variant of the Kansai dialect, with some of her words being pronounced differently from standard Japanese, having a somewhat different grammar style compared to regular Japanese as well as using several Kansai idioms in her dialogue.

- Shiver may be ambidextrous, as shown from how she frequently holds her fan in both her right and left hands.
- For some reason, the appearance of Shiver’s teeth is inconsistent in her different appearances, as while her base model depicts her with the usual Octoling teeth, her Tableturf card art depicts her with the teeth of an Inkling.
- Shiver acts as the main composer and lyricist of Deep Cut, while in the studio she and Frye are the main singers.
- Shiver's clan name, Hohojiro, means great white shark in Japanese.
- Like her bandmates, Shiver represents one of the three poisons of the mind in Buddhist teaching, with hers being the Rooster poison, symbolising greed and obsession. This can be inferred from how her remix of Anarchy Poisons is the Rooster Mix.
- According to the post-Big Run Splatcast dialogue for Inkblot Academy, Shiver used to study painting and became famous for her abstract painting of the Great Zapfish. However, she reveals that she was in fact trying to paint a portrait of her teacher.
- According to early concept art in The Art of Splatoon 3, Shiver is 24 years old, though seeing as she and the rest of Deep Cut were peers in school, it’s likely she’s around Frye’s age of 22.
