Shogun Nariyoshi Tokugawa or also known as the Shogun, is the overarching antagonist of the dark fantasy manga/anime series Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku. He is the power-hungry and bloodthirsty eleventh Shogun of Japan, who ordered the expedition to Kotaku, so he could gain the elixir to become immortal for his own personal gain.
He is voiced by Barry Yandell in the English dubbed version and Chafurin in the Japanese version of the anime adaptation.
Personality[]
The Shogun shows himself as a calm and friendly figure when introduced with most of his subjects, but underneath it is a meglomaincal, bloodthirsty, and immature psychopath who regularly orders the deaths of numerous villages of nomads for his own bigoted amusement. He also shows high levels of depravity as he loves violence as an art by having committed many mass murders on villages and even personally set up the mad Yamada Asaemon to slaughter a crime family and even their relatives, with the infants not being safe from him. He also is aware that the people he sent on those death matches will die on the island and the voyages he sent them on are seen as "tests" to him.
Overall, unlike Rien and the rest of the inmates, Nariyoshi is a selfish and depraved manchild who shows no remorse for his crimes and empathy for any of his enemies, even delighting in mass murder and other violent acts for his own personal and twisted amusement.
