Shou Saito is the main antagonist of the Sci-Fi anthology show Black Mirror third season second episode, Playtest. He is the head of Saito-Gemu who revolutionized the horror genre, but he is revealed to be criminally negligent and dangerous to the lives of people.
He is played by Ken Yamamura.
Personality[]
Shou appears as a friendly and soft-spoken person, who barely speaks much English himself, however, can and still will bring a good repertoire with someone, showing him talking and chatting up Cooper. He is also shown to be deeply devoted to making video games, being one of the most successful horror game creators. However, at the end of the episode, Shou appears in a much darker light as a neglectful and ruthless person who cares little about the deaths of others. After Cooper ultimately suffers a brain aneurysm due to his phone ringing disrupting the frequency in the mushroom, Shou shows zero emotion towards Cooper’s death, only angered that the phone wasn’t turned off. And when Katie mentions, disturbed by seeing him die, that he was calling out for his mom, Shou simply tells her to write it down in the report, showing himself to be utterly uncaring of people who died because of his minimal safety nets, and it’s implied this isn’t the first, nor will it be the last time that this will happen.
Biography[]
Shou is the head and founder of Saito-Gemu, which is popular and said to have revolutionized experiencing horror games. When Cooper is down on his luck and needs enough money to get back home, he agrees to an ad about testing a new experimental game, meeting with Shou’s assistant Katie. He gets an implant called a “mushroom” which will be used to see things in 4D AR type structure, and Cooper takes photos of the machines while Katie goes to see Sonja to get more money.
After the successful game test, he meets with Shou and Cooper agrees to a test, going to an abandoned mansion to do a horror style ARG where he is faced with his fears. However, once the fears get physical with him, Katie declares that something is wrong with Cooper’s implant. After Cooper suffers a psychotic break, he suddenly comes to with Katie and Shou next to him, with Shou apologizing for the experiment going wrong and saying he removed the implant. Cooper returns home to meet his mom, but he is horrified to see that she doesn’t see or hear him, suddenly prompting him to scream for her.
He then is back to the testing room at the start, revealing that almost none of the episode was real, and was all a figment of Cooper’s mind. Cooper then proceeds to have an aneurysm as the buzzing from his mom calling him disrupted the Mushroom’s frequency, killing Cooper in 0.04 seconds when the experiment began. Shou is last seen with Katie as medics are hauling his body away, and Shou simply has Katie tally his death and put down his last words “Mum.”
In the episode Black Museum, on one of the TV screens, it’s said that Shou is on trial as it shows the inside video of Cooper and Katie, implying that Shou may be in serious trouble and be imprisoned for the rest of his life.
Trivia[]
- Despite being the main antagonist, Shou himself only physically appears at the end of the episode, as his appearances before that were not real and were Cooper’s dying memories.
