Oroku Saki, better known as the Shredder, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Krang) of the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, a major antagonist of the 2009 animated television film Turtles Forever, and a supporting antagonist in the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series.

He is the leader of the Foot Clan and the partner of Krang, working with him in order to conquer the world and destroy the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He is also the arch-nemesis of Splinter and the Turtles, and the one responsible for their mutations.

Biography[]

Past[]

Oroku Saki was a first-rank ninja of the Foot Clan, a Japanese dynasty of ninjas led by the honorable Hamato Yoshi, whose distant ancestor founded the clan centuries ago. A power-hungry and ambitious man, Saki resented Yoshi's leadership and aspired to usurp him, taking control of the clan for himself. To this end, Saki pinned the back of Yoshi’s dogi to the wall with a knife so that he couldn’t bow before a visiting master sensei, which was seen as an insult. When Yoshi removed the knife, the sensei was again insulted, believing that he was drawing the blade in an attempt to kill him. Yoshi was subsequently banished from the Foot Clan, allowing Saki to take over and transform it into an army of crime. Later, he followed Yoshi to New York City, intending to finish him off once and for all. It was around this time (presumably) that he met Krang, a warlord from Dimension X who had been stripped of his body (reducing him to a brain-like form) and banished to Earth.

A deal had been struck, and Saki would gain access to a wide array of advanced technologies (including the Technodrome and a massive robotized army of Foot Soldiers) in exchange for building Krang a new body, which he eventually does at the end of season 1. Donning a bladed metal samurai suit, he took on a new pseudonym: 'the Shredder'. Saki eventually found Yoshi in the New York City sewer system and dumped a chemical mutagen down the drain in the hopes that it would poison him. Instead, it mutated Yoshi, who had most recently been exposed to rats, into a giant, humanoid rat. In addition, it also mutated Yoshi's pet turtles, who had most recently been exposed to Yoshi, into humanoid, talking turtles.

Season 1[]

TMNT1987 Shredder

Shredder begins a crime wave throughout New York City, having his Foot Soldiers and other hired thugs steal advanced technology for him. He also creates a faux security service team from his Foot Soldiers, who then rob the buildings they are supposed to guard. After the news reporter April O’Neil begins investigating this crime wave, Shredder sends some of his thugs to silence her. However, she is saved by the Ninja Turtles and later discovers Shredder’s security scam. In response, Shredder sends his Foot Soldiers to kidnap April, but the Turtles rescud her. He later tries flooding the building that April and the Turtles are in, but they manage to escape. Shredder then turns to Krang for help, but the latter refuses as Shredder has not yet honored his part of the deal: to build Krang a new body. Shredder decides to ignore Krang's nagging and come up with a plan to mutate some of his own henchmen, using more powerful animals than the Turtles and Splinter.

To this end, Shredder sends two Roadkill Rodney robots to steal a rhinoceros and warthog from a local zoo, using his mutagen to transform Bebop and Rocksteady (who earlier fought the Turtles and want revenge) into a humanoid warthog and rhinoceros, respectively. He then has one of his robots capture Splinter, using him as bait in the hopes that it will lure the Turtles to the Technodrome, where they will face Shredder himself. Bypassing all of the Technodrome's traps, they eventually find Shredder, who tells them that he is responsible for their creation and then asks them to join him. The Turtles tell him to "go suck a lemon", prompting Shredder to send Bebop and Rocksteady after them. However, despite their superior strength and stamina, Bebop and Rocksteady are held back by their inane stupidity, allowing the Turtles to easily outwit them and escape with Splinter.

Shredder’s next plan involves recruiting an embittered inventor named Baxter Stockman to create an army of robots called Mousers, a rat-catching device that Stockman originally intended to sell to a pest control company before they rejected his invention on the grounds that it is too effective and would have eventually put them out of business. He successfully captures Michelangelo and corners the rest of the Turtles with the Mousers. However, when Krang sees that Shredder’s plan is working, he frees Michelangelo, since Shredder would have no need to make Krang a new body if he succeeds. Michelangelo soon destroys the Master Control to the Mousers, foiling Shredder's plan.

Still determined to avoid having to give Krang a body, the Shredder uses the Techondrome’s dimensional portal to try and get more weapons from Dimension X but, instead of getting weapons, he gets the Neutrinosl a group of bratty Dimension X teenagers, along with some of Krang's rock soldiers who are pursuing them. Shredder sends the Rock Soldiers after the Turtles, who have befriended the Neutrinos before luring the Rock Soldiers back into Dimension X, convincing the Neutrinos to go back as well. Finally out of options, the Shredder decides to build a body for Krang, as well as a ray gun that can reverse the effects of the Mutagen, intending to use it to undo the Turtles' mutation, transforming them back into ordinary pet shop turtles, and robbing them of all of their humanoid abilities.

Shredder sends a message to the Turtles, telling them that the ray is the only means of restoring Splinter to human form; Splinter going alone since he knows what the Shredder intends to do with that ray. Splinter and Shredder engage in a long, drawn out battle, while Krang uses his new android suit to fight the Turtles and terrorize the city. In addition to granting him increased fighting prowess, it also comes with a special chip allowing Krang to expand his molecules and increase his size to that of a towering behemoth. However, the Turtles infiltrate his body and destroy the chip, returning him to normal size. With his size advantage gone, Krang decides that he has no choice but to summon the Shredder, who responds by putting his fight with Splinter on hold and trapping him in an electric force field, although Splinter eventually escapes. Shredder arrives with the ray gun and prepares to use it on the Turtles, but Splinter destroys the gun. The Turtles pursue them back to the Technodrome and utilize its Dimensional Portal to suck the Technodrome, along with the Shredder and Krang, into Dimension X. Trapped there, Shredder is stuck following Krang’s orders, and is determined to get back to Earth so as to have revenge on the Turtles and Splinter.

Season 2[]

Krang eventually sends the Shredder back to Earth, but refuses to give him any more assistance until he can prove himself. In one of his plans, he takes over a dojo and creates the Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang, which he uses to frame the Ninja Turtles, although they are defeated. Shredder also recruites Baxter Stockman (who had been sent to a lunatic asylum after his Mousers were defeated) to help him fight the Turtles, but eventually gets tired of his constant failures. Eventually, Krang sends Bebop and Rocksteady back to Earth to help Shredder in exchange for Baxter, who Krang accidentally turns into a mutant fly.

At one point, the Shredder eavesdrops on the Turtles and finds out about three alien objects that crash landed on Earth called the Three Fragments of the Eye of Sarnoth, which can grant its wielder great power when the three pieces are united. He finds one fragment and discovers that it can shrink people, using it to shrink the Turtles, capture them, and nearly finish them off before Splinter intervenes, returning them to their normal size. The Shredder engages in a race with the Turtles to get the Fragments and eventually collecting all of them, attaching them to his helmet to use its power. However, Stockman eventually gets his hands on it and, fed up with Shredder's abuse, double crosses him. Shredder manages to get the helmet back as well as the Zarvometer which the Turtles had been using to track the fragments. However, the Zarvometer is designed to destroy the Eye when they come into contact. The Turtles warn Shredder of the danger and he throws the helmet into the Hudson River, where it implodes.

After some time, the Shredder manages to obtain the energy needed to bring the Technodrome back to Earth by taking over a dam and sapping its energy. During the ensuing conflict, he faces off against Splinter in combat but loses and Donatello’s intervention causes the Technodrome to sink to the core of the Earth without the power to even move.

Season 3[]

The Shredder continues to clash with the Turtles by using transport modules from Krang to leave the Technodrome. His plans focuse on either getting rid of the Turtles or obtaining the energy to re-power the Technodrome.

The Shredder eventually succeeds in the latter and plans to open a portal to send Earth into Dimension X, where Krang’s Rock Soldiers will fire on it. Shredder fights against Splinter again, but is defeated once more. Eventually, the Turtles send the Technodrome, along with Shredder and his allies, into the portal where it is fired on by the Rock Soldiers, who mistake it for Earth. As a result, the Technodrome is almost completely destroyed and the villains are trapped in Dimension X, prompting Shredder to joke that "it could be worse, we might have wound up in Dimension Z", angering Krang.

However, Shredder and his allies manage to make yet another return with the Technodrome, although the fortress would constantly get stuck in places like the North Pole and the bottom of the ocean.

Season 7[]

Eventually, the Technodrome is sent back to Dimension X by the Turtles, but without Shredder, Krang, Bebop, or Rocksteady which leaves them stranded on Earth with no power or weapons, and they are forced to run from hideout to hideout, constantly pursued by the Turtles. Later on, Krang is captured by Drakus, an old partner of Krang's who he eventually betrayed, although Shredder is unaware of this and believes that the Turtles have him. In response, the Shredder threatens to blow up the Channel 6 news building if Krang is not returned within a certain amount of time. They rescue Krang from Drakus and bring him to Shredder but, due to being a minute late, the building is still intact, and the Turtles infer that Shredder is bluffing. However, Shredder responds that he never bluffed and blows up the building, which causes April to become a free-lance reporter and a disgraced Burne Thompson to blame this on the Turtles, which also sparks an worldwide outrage against Burne Thompson demanding to called off his vendetta on the Turtles, until he finally admits that it was the Shredder who did blowed up the Channel 6 building.

The villains manage to create a new portal into Dimension X and reclaim the Technodrome, preparing to bring it to Earth once more. The Turtles face off against Shredder and Krang on the planet Balaraphon and blow up the Technodrome's main engines before escaping through the portal back to Earth. Moments later, an alien plant wraps its tentacles around the Technodrome and pulls it into a deep pit, destroying the fortress for good.

Season 9[]

The Shredder spends the next two years in Dimension X, abandoning the ruined Technodrome and searching for new means to rebuild their power. Eventually, Shredder and Krang encounter Mung, a servant of Lord Dregg looking for resources in Dimension X who returns to Dregg's ship and tells him about Shredder and Krang, and Dregg responds by transporting them back to Earth to help him fight the Turtles, but neither of them have any interest in working with Dregg and immediately rebel. Wasting no time, they kidnap April O'Neil and do battle with the Turtles once more, although they are all soon transported back to Dregg's lair. Reluctantly agreeing to work with Dregg, Shredder and Krang manage to subdue the Turtles, allowing Dregg to place them in a machine that would drain their life force, along with their ninja skills.

However, Shredder and Krang betray Dregg and force him onto one of the operating tables, taking Mung hostage in the process. Mung releases his microbots to apprehend the pair and free Dregg, allowing him to do what he intended to do all along: drain Shredder and Krang of their life force, intelligence, and fighting abilities so he would become invincible. The Shredder breaks free before Dregg can take anything and escapes with Krang. Later on, Shredder gives some of his own life energy to revive Krang and together they resolve to take out both Dregg and the Turtles. In one final conflict, Shredder and Krang are transported back to Dimension X. Although they are not seen again for the remaining three episodes, it is assumed that they are still alive and would have eventually returned to Earth.

Turtles Forever[]

At one point, the Shredder us trying to steal some vials of mutagen and the Turtles are trying to stop him, but the Technodrome’s Dimensional Portal explodes. They end up in an alternate universe, that of the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' cartoon. The Shredder is enraged to find out he was in an alternate dimension and was found by 1987 Turtles and their 2003 counterparts. Shredder sends Bebop and Rocksteady, along with his Foot Soldiers against them, but they are defeated. However, the Shredder realizes that, if there are versions of the Turtles in this new dimension, there should be a version of himself. After making his Foot Soldiers self-destruct as a distraction, Shredder retreats with the Technodrome to find his other self. He manages to bring the Utrom Shredder to the Technodrome but is shocked when he sees the real form of the small Utrom alien, Ch’rell. The 1987 Shredder revives him, but this backfires after the Utrom Shredder overthrows him and Krang, taking control of the Technodrome.

1987 Shredder is forced to stand by as the Utrom Shredder combines the technologies of the Technodrome and Utrom for a new plan. He and Krang later watch as Utrom Shredder assaults New York with the Technodrome and his army of cyber ninjas and mutants. As the Turtles arrive, 1987 Shredder and Krang urge Utrom Shredder to destroy them, but he strikes them down and orders Bebop and Rocksteady to restrain them. As the Utrom Shredder begins destroying the multiverse, Karai frees Shredder and Krang, who side with the Turtles to face his counterpart. Together, they defeat the Utrom Shredder, and in 1987 Shredder and Krang form a temporary truce with the 1987 Turtles to get home. However, they promise they will be enemies again when they get back.

2012 series[]

In the episodes "The Manhattan Project" and "Transdimensional Turtles", the 1987 Turtles reference Shredder when a Kraathatrogon Worm ends up in New York, stating that he and Krang must be behind it.

1987 Shredder in the 2012 series.

The Shredder makes his return in the series in the episode "Wanted: Bebop & Rocksteady", when he and Krang transport themselves to the 2012 series' dimension, although accidentally abandoning Bebop and Rocksteady in the process. Placing an ad in the paper for a mutant rhino and warthog, Shredder and Krang meet the 2012 versions of Bebop and Rocksteady, who they hire immediately after they beat Shredder in combat. Taking them to the Technodrome, Shredder and Krang give the two massive amounts of money and then pit them against the '87 Turtles once they arrive in the 2012 dimension. Before long, Bebop and Rocksteady defeat the '87 Turtles and bring them back to the Technodrome, where Shredder and Krang relish in their defeat. After the 2012 Turtles arrive and are defeated and imprisoned inside a protoplasmic substance, Shredder doesn't allow Bebop and Rocksteady to kill them, stating that they deserve a slow death, subsequently insulting and laughing at them with Krang, causing Bebop to state that they are even dumber that he and Rocksteady are. After the Turtles escape, Shredder insults and blames Bebop and Rocksteady, causing them to ask why he feels the need to constantly do so. When Krang states that they need to focus on their plans and getting rid of the Turtles, Shredder suggests baiting them out with pizza, as "pizza usually works".

Later, when Krang tells Bebop and Rocksteady that they need to steal a microchip from the Earth Protection Force in order to for them to summon his army from Dimension X, Shredder states that they will definitely mess it up, enraging them. Shredder then helps Bebop and Rocksteady fight off the Turtles by summoning an army of Foot-Bots and is easily beaten by Karai, who believes him to be the real Shredder; even Shredder is confused by this, as he's never met this Karai. Despite the Turtles' best efforts, Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady manage to escape with the microchip.

Afterwards, Shredder and Krang drill the Technodrome underground and set up an ambush for the Turtles when they come after them. While the Turtles fight off their Foot-Bots, Shredder and Krang force Bebop and Rocksteady to wax the floors while they lazily watch, also ordering them to steal Kraang Crystals from TCRI after they are done. Before Leatherhead and Slash can stop Bebop and Rocksteady from getting away with the Crystals, Shredder hits them with his tank, grabs Bebop and Rocksteady and escapes once again. After returning with the Crystals, Shredder rages at Krang for using his "Chrome Dome" shampoo.

With everything they need, Shredder and Krang unleash the Technodrome on New York and rampage through the city. Moments before opening the portal to Dimension X, Krang and Shredder promote Bebop and Rocksteady to their equals for their efforts, and Shredder confesses that he and Krang have been hard on them because of how used their Bebop and Rocksteady they are. While Bebop and Rocksteady are rejoicing in finally getting the respect they desired, Shredder and Krang announce their intentions to destroy the 2012 universe's Earth, which unsettles both Bebop and Rocksteady. After opening the portal to Dimension X and unleashing his army, Krang grows frustrated at how the Turtles have begun to fight them off, although Shredder (who is heavily implied to be currently intoxicated) states that, with Bebop and Rocksteady by their side, they have no way of loosing. Krang and Shredder then assist Krang's soldiers and begin defeating the Turtles, however, not willing to destroy the world, Bebop and Rocksteady turn on them and disrupt the portal, sucking all of Krang's soldiers back into Dimension X. Shredder then lashes out at Bebop and Rocksteady for ruining their plans, although he is swiftly knocked out by Leatherhead, restrained and taken back to his dimension by the '87 Turtles.

The Shredder in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

The Shredder appears as a playable DLC character in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, being revealed on February 3rd, 2022 as one of the four currently playable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reps in the game.

Personality[]

Shredder is portrayed as a devious and lethal adversary but, as time goes on, he becomes a villain that, while sinister, is amateurish and sometimes negative. Shredder constantly argues with Krang, who is arguably more sinister than him, since he hates having to play second fiddle when he used to be in charge. They enjoy watching each other fail, even sabotaging each other. Splinter has always been Shredder’s enemy and he has always expressed a desire to finish the rat off with his own hand. Despite his desire to take over, there was one episode where the Turtles went to an alternate dimension where Shredder took over because the Turtles never existed. And yet, he suffered a nervous breakdown due to the stress of having to rule.

Shredder, even during the later seasons, makes up for his poor track record with his sadism. While he can be affable at times, he takes delight in his victims' suffering regardless of who his target is at the moment. This extends to his allies as he is as abrasive to Krang as Krang is to him. Despite this, he does have some fondness for him as he healed him after Dregg absorbed some of his energy.

He is arguably the least sinister Shredder in the TMNT Multiverse with Lord Dregg highly outclassing him as a villain (especially since Dregg got more risky while fighting the Turtles drove him nuts). Shredder looks like a good guy in comparison to his murderous 2003 and 2012 counterparts. In fact, the 2012 Bebop and Rocksteady note that he appears more clueless than them, and those two were more professional than their 80s counterparts.

Powers and Abilities[]

Shredder is a considerably skilled martial artist, outfighting the Turtles on occasion. He is equal in skill to their master, Splinter, but often runs when he is outnumbered. Shredder is extremely intelligent, particularly with technology since he created Krang's body, along with numerous other devices, and the mutagen formula. With the Technodrome and his army of Foot Soldiers, Shredder can be a formidable opponent, but his personality usually prevents this. He also has a habit of being overconfident and letting his desire to make his Turtles suffer impact his schemes.

Arsenal[]

  • Claw Gauntlets: The Utrom Shredder has two large serrated claw gauntlets which he can slash his enemies with.

~ Shredder introducing himself to the Turtles.
Shredder: You would be wise to lose your flippant ways if you wish to join the honorable Foot Clan.
Leonardo: Why should we want to do that?
Shredder: Because it was I who made you what you are today. If not for me, Hamato Yoshi would never have left Japan. I followed him to this country, where I gained my advanced technology, including my rare experimental mutagen. It was I who caused you to mutate into your humanoid form. You owe everything to me! Don't deny your destiny. Join me.

This is my fight. I must have the honor of destroying them.

Krang: In Dimension X, I am absolute master. You will do my bidding from now on.
Shredder: The Shredder takes orders from no one!
Krang: We shall see, Oroku Saki.
~ Shredder and Krang after stranding in Dimension X.

Season 2[]

Shredder: Krang! Where is my army? And my Technodrome? And all my weapons?
Krang: You failed to defeat those miserable turtles and their teacher Splinter with my help. Now you must destroy them on your own. I will never give you another speck of aid until you prove worthy of it.
Shredder: I will show you, Krang. I will destroy my enemies, the turtles, and then the world will tremble before the Shredder.
~ Shredder and Krang.
Shredder: So Hamato Yoshi, It appears it is time for our final confrontation!
Splinter: Hamato Yoshi is no longer. There is only Splinter.
Shredder: And soon he will be gone as well!
~ Shredder and Splinter before their second fight.
I hate Grybyxes.
~ Shredder

Trivia[]

TMNTSR-Shredder
  • The 1987 incarnation of Shredder is the first to be directly involved with mutation of Splinter and the Turtles, due to dumping mutagen in the sewer in an attempt to poison Hamato Yoshi. In the original Mirage comic series, Shredder was only responsible for Splinter ending up in the sewers due to killing his master Hamato Yoshi, while his and the Turtles' mutations were caused by chemical mutagen accidentally dumped by TCRI.
    • He is also the first incarnation of Shredder to have a personal history with Hamato Yoshi/Splinter, having previously been his student before having him banished from the Foot Clan to seize power for himself. In the original Mirage comic series, Oroku Saki sought revenge on Hamato Yoshi for the death of his brother, Oroku Nagi, and had no relationship with him otherwise.
    • Various elements from this origin story would later be adapted into the 2003 series (Shredder being involved in the Splinter and the Turtles' mutation, though he is indirectly involved in this version) and both the IDW comic book series and 2012 series (Saki having a personal history with Yoshi).
  • In this continuity, Saki is Shredder's family name, with Oroku being his given name. Due the series being aimed at children in the 1980s, it would have been confusing to use the proper Japanese format of family name followed by given name. His 2012 counterpart onward would have his name formatted properly; thanks to the increased culture knowledge and internet availability.
  • He is the only media incarnation to be portrayed as more comic relief due to the heavier censorship with the original comic books in the 1987 series (aside from Seasons 8 and 10 due to their more serious tone). It was only due to the change in cultural attitude with the lighter censored comic book media adaptions during the 90's on television that led to the later animated incarnations of Shredder to be closer to the Mirage Comics incarnation
