Shrek's Father is a minor antagonist in the Shrek franchise.
He was the unhinged, cannibalistic father of Shrek whom he had feared greatly. Although he had not made any appearances in the films, Shrek's Father served as a contributing factor for Shrek's personality in the films, living alone, avoiding others, acting monstrous, and being hesitant of the idea of having a family.
Biography[]
Past[]
Shrek discussed his father with Arthur, stating that he had a much better father than he did. Shrek claimed that his father had planned on eating him, bathing him in barbeque sauce and putting him to bed with an apple in his mouth. These traumatic events are what made Shrek fearful of becoming a father.
Legacy[]
Shrek's Father does not appear in any of the movies, but he was possibly one of the contributing factors of Shrek's lifestyle. A good example being his treatment of Shrek, which might have played a part in causing him to be a aggressive loner in the first film.
Shrek's Father appears alongside his wife in the Shrek comic series, where they make a surprise visit to the swamp and meet their grandchildren. However, they are repulsed when the orge triplets are labeled cute, declaring that they should be seen a viscious monsters, and ridicule Shrek for failing to bring up his children properly. Shrek's father is shown to be verbally abusive towards his son, declaring that if he was one of the orge triplets, he would be ashamed to call Shrek his father. Eventually, Fiona has enough of her in-laws' behaviour towards her husband and stands up to them, losing her temper and angrily declaring that if Shrek's parents disapprove of how their grandchildren are being raised, they can return to whatever dark and miserbale swamp the crawled out of. Shrek's father is impressed by Fiona's display of anger, and leaves feeling assured that the ogre triplets are in the good hands of his daughter-in-law.
Other Media[]
Shrek the Musical[]
Shrek's father is portrayed in a slightly different light in Shrek the Musical, though still somewhat abusive to Shrek. In the musical, it is revealed that Shrek's mother and father had made him move out of their house at age 7 due to "ogre rules", and also told him that nobody will ever like him.
Trivia[]
- In the original storyboards for the scene where Shrek reveals to Donkey why he isolates himself (When Chris Farley was intended to voice the titular character before his death) he admits that his parents were overprotective of him, as they told him people loved ogres as a child, and that he wanted to prove himself to them. This most likely means that Shrek's father was intended to be nicer and would have had a better relationship with his son in the original film.
- Considering Shrek pointing out he was an ogre before saying he tried to eat him, it’s possible cannibalism is normal for ogres (which would make them closer to how ogres are depicted in mythology, where they are considered a type of cannibalistic giant).
