Frances Barrison, also known as Shriek, is the secondary antagonist of the 2021 Sony's Spider-Man Universe superhero film Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the second installment in the Venom trilogy.
She was the girlfriend of Cletus Kasady and an inmate at the Ravencroft Institute who was imprisoned there due to her supersonic powers. She is the archenemy of Detective Patrick Mulligan.
She was portrayed by Naomie Harris (in her first villainous role) as an adult and by Olumide Olorunfemi as a teenager.
Biography[]
Early life[]
When she was young, Frances Barrison was sent to a children's home called St. Estes Home for Unwanted Children, due to her mutant abilities. After seeing a young Cletus Kasady getting bullied by other kids, she took pity on him and scared the kids off with her sonic scream powers. The two would then bond as they grew up in the children's home, forming a romantic chemistry.
In 1996, Frances was hauled off to the Ravencroft Institute due to her growing power, much to Cletus' furious dismay. On the way, she used her sonic scream to try and escape, attacking officer Patrick Mulligan. Mulligan however, shot Frances in the eye, yet he still received an injury to his ear due to her scream. Unbeknownst to Mulligan, who believed he killed her, Frances was successfully delivered to the Ravencroft Institute, and placed in a glass prison cell hardened against her powers. For the next two decades, she would remain imprisoned at the institute, suffering abuse by the head doctor, Camille Pazzo. Over time, she was given the nickname "Shriek" by the staff.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage[]
25 years after being separated from his girlfriend, Cletus had Eddie Brock run a coded message in the paper in exchange for his life story; to let Shriek know he intended to keep his promise to marry her. However, during Eddie's visit, Venom figured out the location of Cletus' victims from his cell drawings, allowing the police to exhume them. After the discovery, Cletus was sentenced to death by lethal injection, which made Shriek scream in horror upon reading the article.
Cletus however, would later escape his execution with the help of his new "friend" Carnage. In exchange for helping to kill its parent, Venom, Carnage helped Cletus break into the Ravencroft Institute and free Shriek from her prison. During their escape, Shriek used her power against a police chopper, taking it down, but at the same time weakening Carnage due to his vulnerability to noise. Cletus quickly told her to stop, and Carnage threatened Cletus that he would eat her face if she did it again.
After leaving the Ravencroft Institute, the three went to St. Estes and burned the home down. The trio then planned a “red wedding” for Cletus and Shriek, inviting 3 guests whom they planned on killing: Venom, Eddie Brock, and Patrick Mulligan.
While Cletus and Carnage took Mulligan hostage, Shriek broke into Eddie's apartment to kidnap him. However, she arrived to find the apartment vacant, and began to investigate Eddie's desk to find his whereabouts. Upon digging through his drawers, Shriek found Eddie's old engagement ring for Anne Weying, and decided to use the ring herself for her upcoming wedding. She then found a picture of Anne, and got the idea to use her as a lure for Brock.
Shriek arrived at Anne and Dan Lewis' apartment, and incapacitated Dan outside before entering. After knocking out Anne, she gave Dan an invitation to her and Cletus' Wedding so that he would pass the message to Eddie.
For their wedding, Cletus and Shriek took over Grace Cathedral and held a Priest hostage to perform the ceremony. Just as the ceremony was about to finish, Venom arrived to fight Carnage. Before their fight, Shriek used her powers against Venom, weakening both Symbiotes and causing Carnage to knock her away. Shriek then went to a captive Officer Mulligan to kill him with a scream, but Carnage pulled her aside and ordered her to kill him without using her powers, much to her reluctance. While they were distracted, Mulligan tried to escape using a scaffolding elevator. Shriek however, quickly caught up to him on the scaffolding, stabbing him in the shoulder and crushing his eye with her thumb before using a chain as a noose to break his neck.
After seemingly killing Mulligan, Shriek went to meet up with Cletus and Carnage at the top of the Cathedral's bell tower. Seeing how Carnage was preparing to kill Anne, Shriek begged Cletus to stop him, thinking he was going too far. Hearing this protest, Carnage grew tired of Shriek's presence and tried to strangle her to death, which caused Cletus to panic and try and stop Carnage from doing so. Venom then reached the bell tower, successfully rescuing Anne, but was impaled several times by Carnage. On the brink of death, Venom saw Shriek and knocked her down the bell tower. As she fell, she let out another sonic scream, destroying part of the tower and causing both symbiotes to separate from their hosts. Shriek broke her fall slightly by grabbing onto some curtains, yet upon hitting the ground, she saw the dislodged bell from the tower falling toward her. Before she could let out one final scream, the bell crushed her to death.
