Shuhei Aosato is the main antagonist of "Ikkaku Rock's Disappearing Fish".
He's voiced by Ken Narita.
Background[]
He's a 25-year-old diver and a member of the Akamine Angel Fish Club, founded by Hikari Akamine. He has a band-aid on his chin, just below his mouth. When asked by the inspector, he states that he's using it to cover a pimple.
Plot overview[]
The Detective Boys go fishing with Futoshi Ejiri. When they're later picked up by Subaru Okiya and the fisherman Iwao Ida, they make a little detour to Sea Horn Rock and discover the deceased Hikari Akamine there. The young woman was killed by Shuhei Aosato, who wanted to avenge the death of his diving buddy Yoshiro caused by Hikari. Commissioner Jugo Yokomizo of the Yokohama Police Department is taking the case as Sea Horn Rock is his area of responsibility.
Evidence[]
- The scuba gear mouthpiece lying next to the corpse and the lipstick on her mouth prove that Hikari Akamine's death was a murder and not an accident. This is smeared, but the mouthpiece is completely clean. So it must have belonged to another diver.
- Hikari's dying message contains her killer's name, but is encrypted. It contains the four characters for mackerel, carp, sea bream and flounder, the rest for "fish". Covering the radical in each character creates new, different characters, which together read "Aosato, Shuhei", referring to her killer.
- The victim's diving watch provides clues as to how the death message can be deciphered. When Hikari carved the tablets into the rock, she made sure that the word for fish was the only part of the inscription "Akamine Angel Fish Club" that was no longer legible.
- Hikari's lipstick isn't only a clue that the young woman was murdered, it also becomes her killer's undoing. In order to swap out the mouthpiece on Hikari's scuba gear, he had to use her mouthpiece to dive off the sea rock. Some of her lipstick got on his mouth and chin, and traces of it couldn't be easily wiped away.
The course of events[]
Aosato took advantage of the fact that the wayward young woman liked to disappear for a while without telling anyone beforehand. So he sent his diving buddies and himself a message from Hikari's cell phone after leaving it on the sea rock. Similar to a few days before, this one said that Hikari wanted to be alone for a while and the others shouldn't worry or even look for her. Since Sea Horn Rock was normally avoided by fishermen, he could assume that Hikari wouldn't be found in time. To lure her to the rocks in the first place, he had unnoticed cut the air hose on Hikari's scuba gear. Under the pretense of getting help, he made the young woman wait for him at Sea Horn Rock and dove back alone. Now all he had to do was waiting for Hikari to die of dehydration, replace the defective mouthpiece, and everything would have looked like an accident.
Motive[]
Aosato cites Hikari's inconsiderate behavior towards their diving buddy Yoshiro as the motive for his act. After Hikari had been pushed too far out to sea on a dive together, Yoshiro swam into the current to rescue her. Aosato, Rokusuke Oto and Yasuji Kaita eventually found the young woman in a boat. She claimed not to have met Yoshiro and preferred to be taken ashore immediately rather than go in search of her savior. It later turned out that Hikari lied. She had met Yoshiro because there were traces of her lipstick on his mouthpiece. However, even when Aosato confronted her, Hikari showed no remorse.
