| ~ Rutledge extorting sex from Chloe Kelcher. |
Sid Rutledge is a supporting antagonist in the Criminal Minds episode "The Angel Maker". He is a prison guard who abuses his position to rape female inmates and sell serial killer memorabilia.
He is portrayed by Darin Cooper.
Biography[]
Rutledge used to work as a guard at a women's prison, where he abused his position to extort sex from female inmates. He was eventually discovered and quietly transferred to Hawkesville Prison, Ohio, in order to avoid a scandal.
During Rutledge's tenure, serial killer Cortland Bryce Ryan, who raped and murdered six women to correspond to the Heavenly Waters constellations, was transferred to Hawkesville to await execution. Ryan, a narcissistic psychopath, put several of his belongings up for auction as serial killer memorabilia and enlisted Rutledge's help. Rutledge smuggled the memorabilia out of the prison and sold it online for profit. At one point after Ryan's execution he was approached by an obsessed woman named Chloe Kelcher, who asked to buy a sample of Ryan's semen with which to impregnate herself. Rutledge gave it to her in exchange for sex. However, Kelcher's child was stillborn and she came to the conclusion that the only way to commemorate Ryan was to finish what he started.
"The Angel Maker"[]
Kelcher begins murdering women in a way that imitates Ryan's M.O., planting Ryan's semen in the bodies to simulate the rape. As a result, the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit is called in to investigate. BAU Agent Derek Morgan interviews Rutledge about the sale of Ryan's memorabilia. Rutledge dodges the question, explaining that he's always been more worried about things being smuggled into the prison. Morgan informs him that Ryan's semen was found at the crime scenes, causing him to realize that Kelcher is responsible.
Rutledge goes to confront Kelcher with the intention of blackmailing her for sex. Together they go to Rutledge's house, where Rutledge intends to have sex with Kelcher in return for his silence. Instead, Kelcher shoots him three times in the genitals and head off-screen. His body is later found by Morgan when he goes to interview Rutledge.
Trivia[]
- Rutledge is inspired by Clarence Alligood, a serial rapist of inmates while he was a prison guard, later being killed in self-defense by one victim, Joan Little.
