~ Sigma to X in Mega Man X8. |
Sigma (in Japanese: シグマ, Shiguma) is the main antagonist of the Mega Man X series.
He was the once the Reploid leader of the heroic Maverick Hunters. However, after a fateful encounter with Dr. Wily's prized creation, Zero, Sigma became infected the Maverick Virus, which merged with his programming and provoked thoughts of rebellion. Seeking to rise up against humanity and establish a new world order, Sigma became the supreme leader of the Mavericks and the archenemy of Mega Man X and Zero.
In Japanese, he has been voiced by Mugihito in all voiced appearances. In English, he was voiced by Garry Chalk in the Mega Man cartoon, Charlie Fontana in Mega Man X4, Walter Roberts in Mega Man X7, Dave Pettitt in Mega Man X8, Gerald Matthews in Mega Man Maverick Hunter X and Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X - The Day of Sigma, and Chris Tergliafera in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
Appearance[]
Sigma resembles a bald man with glowing eyes that seemingly lack pupils. He is often seen with a grin.
Personality[]
Sigma started his career as a noble warrior who only desired to accomplish his tasks and keep peace by destroying the mavericks, but once the virus took over him and corrupted his programming, Sigma progressively became a monster, hellbent in eliminating humanity.
While in the original game Sigma shows traces of believing that his actions are in the best interest of the reploids, in later entries, Sigma's actions seem out of hatred of X and Zero, and to cause as much damage as he can.
Sigma has an interesting trait that sets him apart from the other villains in the Mega Man X series. While most other Reploids lose control of their inhibitions and conscious though, and, for lack of a better term, go insane, Sigma does not lose his cool. He is able to study and learn new things, such as the reasoning for X's constant worry, Zero's shady past, among other things. He is even able to conceptualize grand-scale plans and effectively strategize while in this state. With most infected Mavericks, we never see their true personality, as it is masked by the virus. However, Sigma shows his true personality all throughout. He is a bossy, brilliant, and destructive military strategist who uses this to his full advantage. He allows his right hand man, Vile to do whatever he wants for his own accords.
His obsession with destroying humanity as well as X and Zero stems from the virus, but one thing that has always set him apart is that Sigma doesn't lose control of himself. Mega Man X6 might be the singular exception, because Sigma wasn't all there due to the damage inflicted on him from his battle in the previous game.
Sigma has always been very discerning, intelligent, perspicacious, and imaginative, and remains so. Sigma keeps his enemies' weaknesses in mind and preys on them (such as X's big heart, Zero's wanting to block out all mention of his bloody past, or Axl's discontent at being called a prototype). Sigma's personality itself, post-infection, has been very manipulative, ruthless, power-hungry, and sadistic. He controlled Dr. Doppler into distributing a placebo antivirus which was instead the virus itself in X3, manipulated the Colonel and the General of the Repliforce (a military-like group meant to compliment the Hunters) into a full-scale war in X4, and Blackmailed the leader of the mercenary Maverick hunting group Red Alert, Red with the latter's infected and mind-controlled friends into cooperating with him in fighting the Hunters in X7.

“ | I met an old man who knows a lot about you... He told me an interesting story. He told me that you are something far greater than what you appear to be... On his advice, I scattered the Virus so that it could infiltrate you, but you haven't shown any signs of waking up... | „ |
~ Sigma’s first mention of Wily to Zero. |
“ | Sigma: Hee hee hee hee. Calm down. I'm here... Let me tell you about an old man I met... He told me that you are the strongest in the universe... Tell me. Who is this old man? Zero: How should I know? I don't know such a person. |

“ | You can challenge me at anytime. I have delightful news. I've recently acquired a new partner. He has been very supportive. He seems to have created quite a few robots. And he gave me the toughest body that you will ever see. You got here sooner than I expected, so it is not yet complete... But...it is enough to defeat you... He is an excellent partner... Trivia[]
- Sigma once fought Ultron in the popular internet show DEATH BATTLE and lost. Ironically, he and Ultron would become allies in the video game crossover, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
- Ironically, Sigma resembles the heroic Charles Xavier with his baldness and face, aside from his scars.
- Sigma is the largest boss in the Mega Man X series who is a Reploid. Most bosses that are larger than his size tend to be Mechaniloids.
- Sigma's design was made by fusing together the designs of three other villains who were used in early development of Mega Man X. Those designs were later used for basis for the X-Hunters.
- In a 2008 Q+A, Keiji Inafune revealed that Sigma's design represents the idea of the impossibility of something being absolute.
- In the first battle with Sigma in Mega Man X, Sigma holding a lightsaber resembles a lightsaber from Star Wars.
- Sigma is the 18th letter of the Greek Alphabet, which fits due to his main foe being X, it being used to show infinite or finite sums of variables, and derives from the Phoenician letter Sheen, which looks similar to the letter W, a possible reference to Dr. Wily.
- Across the lore of the Mega Man X series, there are three different explanations on how Sigma got his scars:
- From either a battle between him and X, seen in the The Day of Σ OVA.
- From battling Zero, seen in X4.
- They were self-inflicted, shown directly in the Rockman X manga and hinted in the Mega Man X 2017 novelization.
- His Benial form from Megaman X8 looks similar to Abyss from the Marvel VS Capcom series.
- If Sigma is used as the player's name in Mega Man 9, the game will censor it to "Si**a", possibly due to it resembling a offensive slur.
- Sigma is the only boss to have an unavoidable attack, as in X8, his grab attack automatically hits in hard mode.
- In Mega Man X8, Sigma's copy is weak to Dark Mantis' weapon, while his real form is weak to Optic Sunflower's weapon. This fits, as both are themed around dark and light respectfully.
- In Mega Man X, Sigma's final form has no arms. However, Maverick Hunter X gives the form arms.
- Sigma has no health bar during the second phase of his fight in X2, but his colour can be used as an indicator of how much health he has left (green at high health, blue at close to mid-level, and red at the critical zone), making him the only major boss to lack a proper health bar.
