I'd like to let you in on a very important secret I learned when I was about your age, boy. You see, power, real power doesn't come to those who were born strongest, or fastest, or smartest. No. It comes to those who will do anything to achieve it. It's time to let the monster out.
~ Silco's famous speech to Deckard.
Renni: What's that?
Silco: Oh, you don't recognize it? Have you forgotten where we came from? The mines they had us in? Air so thick it clogged your throat, stuck in your eyes. But I pulled you all up from the depths, offered you a taste of topside, and fresh air. I gave you life, purpose, but you've grown fat and complacent. Too much time in the sun. We came from a world where there was never enough to go around, Finn. That is why we fight. Do you remember?
Finn: Sorry. Please. Please.
Silco: Don't forget again.
~ Silco reminds the chem-barons of their place.
I never would have given you to them. Not for anything. Don't cry. You're perfect.
~ Silco's final words to Jinx, assuring he still loves her before dying.

Silco is the main antagonist of the first season of Arcane, which is set in the League of Legends universe. He is a Zaunite drug lord and industrialist who seeks to create an independent Zaunite state and is willing to stop at almost nothing to achieve that goal. He is also the adoptive father of Jinx, the boss of Sevika and Marcus, and the arch-nemesis of Vander.

Having grown up in poverty on the streets of Zaun, Silco was close with Vander during their youth, but they eventually became bitter enemies after a violent falling-out. Years later, he would kill Vander out of revenge and take his place as the ruler of Zaun, a position that he would hold until he was inadvertently killed by Jinx at the end of the first season.

He was voiced by Jason Spisak, who also voiced Vladimir and Professor von Yipp in Legends of Runeterra, Jason Dante in Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Vulpes Inculta in Fallout: New Vegas, Silas in The Vampire Diaries, Silico and Packrat in the 2016 Powerpuff Girls series, Oswald Cobblepot in Telltale's Batman, Scorpion in Marvel's Spider-Man, Skizzo in Days Gone, Deag Ranak in Doom: Eternal, and Joker in Batman: Hush.

Appearance[]

Silco is a tall and thin middle-aged man with pale skin, black hair with grey streaks styled into an undercut, a right green eye, and heavy scarring on the left side of his face. His most notable trait is his left eye, which lacks an eyelid and appears to be heavily discolored, with an orange iris and black sclera. He is also generally seen wearing a red and black Piltovan three-piece suit.

In his later years, Silco would often wear heavy makeup and several layers of foundation to hide the fact that his facial scarring was slowly growing worse.

Personality[]

Silco is a ruthless and brutal, yet highly intelligent and cautious man who will do anything to carry out his ambitions. He believes that base violence is the only way to stand against Piltover and unite the underground against the Topsiders, and that power only comes to those who are willing to forsake their own morals to achieve it. His ultimate goal is to free the undercity from Piltover's control and allow it to become an independent Zaunite state under his rule, which he refers to as the Nation of Zaun.

Silco holds a strong grudge against his former brother-in-arms Vander, with the two of them having once shared the same dream of bettering the lives of their people. He also despises the passive leader that Vander ultimately became, believing that the latter had grown soft and weak in his approach against the Topsiders. Despite his grudge, however, Silco still has a degree of respect for Vander, as he remembers the fearsome fighter that the latter used to be, and one point, even offered him the chance to rejoin forces again against Piltover. Even after Vander's death, Silco would still hold his old friend in high esteem, as shown when he paid his respects to a statue of Vander that was made in his honor.

Despite all his personal faults, Silco has a sense of honor and values loyalty, as his generation only survived to the present day because of how they loyal they were to one another. As a result of this, he has little respect for the chem-barons, Finn and Renni in particular, and views them as parasites who take the luxuries that they have for granted and do nothing but leech off the legacies of their ancestors. He also has some level of compassion, as displayed when he embraced and took Powder under his wing after noticing the similarities between her and his younger self.

Over the years, Silco would patiently encourage Powder, now known as Jinx, to pursue her talents and eventually established a close father-daughter relationship with her, ironically echoing the bond that Vi had with Vander. In time, he would come to genuinely love and care for Jinx as his own child and regularly shield her from the criticisms of his other subordinates, even though he was well-aware of her tendencies as a loose cannon. This attachment Silco had for Jinx also led him to never give up on her, even when Jayce offered him Zaun's independence on the condition that he was to turn her over to Piltover, and after Jinx fatally shot him by accident, he didn't blame her for his impending death, instead telling her that she was perfect the way she was and comforting her in his final moments.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Silco grew up in poverty in Zaun, working in the mines alongside Vander, who he came to see as a brother. He attained a dream to one day establish a nation of Zaun independent from Piltover, even if it would mean getting people killed. This caused a fraction between him and Vander and lead to the latter attempting to drown him. Silco managed to survive, but nearly lost his left eye and was heavily scarred as a result. The event would stay in Silco's mind for years, and it would lead him to the conclusion that the only way to defeat a superior enemy is to stop at nothing, no matter the cost. In the years afterwards, he built up a large criminal network in Zaun, hiring a former Piltover scientist named Singed to create Shimmer, a drug capable of powering its users.

Arcane[]

Silco is first seen reprimanding his underling Deckard for facing against Vander's adopted children despite instructions to merely follow them. He then approaches Singed about a deadline for Shimmer who then assures him that it's almost ready. Singed uses a mouse as a test subject, by placing his pet cat in the same cage as it. The mouse then drinks Shimmer and brutally kills the cat. Silco then suggests Deckard as a human test subject for the drug.

Silco would then meet with a Piltover Enforcer named Marcus, where he revealed the location of the children. Later, he talks to Deckard about his philosophy and manipulates him into consuming Shimmer.

Just as Vander is about to be taken into custody by officers Grayson and Marcus, Silco interrupts the scene with a Shimmered-up Deckard who kills Grayson and Benzo. He spares Marcus' life and throws him a coin purse as consolation, before leaving with Vander and Deckard.

After having taken Vander to his base, Silco talks to Vander and reminiscences about their past before having him dragged away and tied to a chair. After Vi, Mylo, and Claggor enter the building to rescue Vander, he orders his underlings to eliminate them, but Vi manages to take them out. He then has Deckard injected with Shimmer once again, who manages to overpower Vi. At the same time, Powder had made her way to the base despite being instructed not to do so. She detonates an explosive laced with three Hextech crystals, which causes a massive explosion.

Silco is saved just in time by his henchmen Sevika who manages to push him out of the way of the explosion at the cost of her arm. As Deckard prepares to eliminate the intruders, Vander manages to rise from the rubble and engages in combat with Deckard, who manages to overpower him. Just as he's about to stand up again, he is stabbed by Silco who makes him fall off the balcony.

Vander quickly returns, however, as he injected Shimmer into himself and assumes a monstrous form. He manages to finish off Deckard and is just about to pursue Silco when he notices Vi is heavily injured and has trouble moving. Vander then chooses to save Vi instead and manages to do so but collapses and dies outside of the building. Silco successfully escaped the building with his remaining lackeys and stumbles upon Powder who is having an emotional breakdown after believing she had been abandoned by her sister. Silco empathizes with the young girl as he had also been betrayed in the past by a sibling, and he then embraces her and takes her in.

In the wake of Vander's death, Silco becomes the de facto ruler of Zaun and takes over "The Last Drop" and makes it his base of operations. He raises Powder like his own daughter, has her adopt the name "Jinx", and trains her to become an efficient operative and killer.

On Progress Day, Silco is discussing the Firelights' attacks on his smuggling operation with Sevika. Sevika is frustrated about Jinx losing control and causing unnecessary casualties and destruction, but Silco merely blames Sevika for failing to make sure things went smoothly and dismisses her. He then shows concern about Piltover's rapid technological development and the widening gap between Piltover and Zaun as a result. It turns out that Jinx had been listening to the conversation from the rafters, and she drops down and talks about her traumatic relapse to him. He reminds her that her sister is dead and that she should move on. While displeased with the financial loss, he nevertheless is sympathetic to Jinx's trauma and tells her to take some time off to focus on her gadgetry.

After Jinx, on the evening of Progress Day, starts a fire and kills six Piltover Enforcers, Silco angrily enters Jinx's hideout and scolds her for the great amount of trouble it will cause him, but he is pacified and brought into a hug when Jinx shows him a refined hextech crystal she managed to steal.

Silco is visited by Marcus who now has obtained the position of Sheriff. Despite their alliance, he is very frustrated and at his limit due to Silco's underling killing six of his subordinates. Silco suggests they publicly blame the Firelights for the incident and focus their efforts on arresting them. He donates some money to the families of the victims, and a heavily dismayed Marcus takes his leave.

Silco expresses his concern about Marcus' faltering patience to Jinx, who's been listening to their conversation from the rafters. He asks her to find a way to weaponize the hextech crystal as soon as possible, but Jinx suggests giving it to Singed instead because she keeps remembering her last experience with the crystal. Silco states that Jinx is the only one he can trust with this task and decides to help her overcome her problem. He takes her to the river where Vander nearly drowned him and tells her how his sibling's betrayal forged him into a stronger person. Silco baptizes Jinx in the water, encouraging her to let go of her troubled past.

Later in his office Sevika shows up in a beaten up state and reveals to a shocked Silco that Vi, who was believed dead, had returned.

Silco and two of his men went to Sheriff Marcus' home and were let in by his daughter Ren. He is stacking cards with her in her room when Marcus discovers them. Silco pressures Marcus to remain cooperative and prevent Vi and her friend from returning to Piltover, subtly threatens his daughter's life to make him complacent, and then leaves.

Later at the bottom of Zaun, Caitlyn and Vi are ambushed by Silco and his men. He gives some Shimmer to the addicts and orders them to attack the pair. Vi, however, manages to make a giant neon sign crash down on him and his men. In frustration at the pair having escaped, he beats up one of the addicts.

Having returned to his office, Silco discovers in shock that Jinx has tied up Sevika and has discovered the truth about her sister's return. Silco seeks to head out and find Jinx, who has now gone missing. However, before he leaves his office, Sevika states that Jinx will come seek him out when she is ready, and suggests Silco to attend an unscheduled meeting with the Chem-Barons. The Chem-Barons show frustration at their low-profit margin and blame Silco for his inactions. Silco, however, decides to teach them a lesson and tortures the Chem-Barons (particularly Finn) by cutting their fresh oxygen supply and releasing gasses. He reminds them that these are the gasses that used to be all around Zaun, and Silco, who apparently has an immunity towards the gas, states that his fellow Chem-Barons have grown fat and complacent and forgotten what they are really fighting for. After proving his point he restores the oxygen supply and leaves.

Later, upon returning to his office, Silco is confronted by Jinx. She repeatedly stabs Silco with his eye injection syringe, claiming him to be a liar. Silco, however, tells Jinx that he didn't know Vi survived and that he wanted to protect her, and reminds Jinx that ultimately everyone betrays them, and only he is her real family. He convinces Jinx to finish the weapon and tells her that he needs her help more than ever. Jinx then gives Silco his proper eye injection and leaves.

After Jinx blows up the bridge leading to Piltover Silco appears there and finds the girl gravely wounded and near death. Worried, he picks Jinx up and leaves. He later brings Jinx to Singed, panicking his daughter might die. Singed states that he can save her, but the man might lose his daughter in the process. Silco states that he can't let Jinx die. Singed understands this, revealing he too once had a daughter, and renders Silco unconscious, knowing he will intervene, but also to spare him from seeing the ''operation''. Silco later wakes up and threatens Singed, asking him what he has done. Singed merely states that he saved Jinx.

After the assault on the Shimmer factory, Silco, Finn, Renni and Sevika go there, only to find Renni's son dead. Renni, upset, asks Silco what he is going to do about this. Silco states Jinx will fix it, which angers Renni. Later in Silco's office, Finn and Renni show up with Sevika. Finn threatens Silco before Sevika kills him. Silco states he would kill Renni's son for this betrayal, but they are already ahead of that now. Silco then reads a letter he received from Jayce.

Jayce and Silco meet up at the waterfront. Silco is aware that Jayce is desperate for peace, but only because he realizes that Zaun will lose if war were to occur. Silco lays out his terms for his own nation of Zaun, and Jayce accepts, provided Shimmer factories are shut down, the core is returned and Jinx is turned in. Silco attempts to take the fall and lies that he ordered the attack on the Enforcers, but Jayce still demands Jinx's arrest. Silco is later seen drinking his frustrations away near a statue of Vander, musing to his late brother-in-arms that he finally has a chance for his own nation, and all he has to do is betray Jinx and turn her over to Jayce. Jinx, overhearing this as she hides behind the statue, confronts, knocks out and kidnaps Silco.

Jinx ties up Silco, Caitlyn and Vi to chairs and forces them into a "family dinner" of sorts. After failing to convince Vi to shoot Caitlyn, Jinx ungags Silco, who tells Jinx that Vi will abandon her again once she realises Jinx will never become Powder again and that the Topside had offered him Zaun's sovereignty, but it can all burn since it requires him to turn her in. Caitlyn breaks free and holds Jinx at gunpoint with Pow-Pow, forcing her to place the pistol on the table. Jinx regains the upper hand shortly after, knocking Caitlyn unconscious with an uppercut. Silco shouts at her to shoot Caitlyn dead (and presumably Vi afterwards) while Vi shouts at Jinx to remember her loved ones in hopes she will spare Caitlyn and leave with Vi. Jinx has a mental breakdown as she hallucinates her foster family.

Bursting free from his ropes, Silco snatches up Jinx's pistol from the table and raises the gun to shoot Vi dead, but misses the shot. Either defending her sister or instinctively reacting to the gunshot, Jinx turns the gun around and fires wildly, fatally wounding Silco with a bullet to the chest on accident, making him drop the pistol on the floor. Horrified, Jinx hurries towards Silco, kneels in front of him, cups his face in her hands, profusely apologizes and sobs. To comfort her in his last moments, Silco softly reassures Jinx he would have never given her up, that he loves her for who she is and that she is perfect. Silco then succumbs to his wounds and dies in Jinx's arms. Powder subsequently reaffirms her identity as Jinx, disowns Vi and launches an attack on Piltover in Silco's memory.

Quotes[]

Don't look so concerned. I'm about to make your day.
~ Silco making a deal with Marcus.
Beautiful, aren't they? And yet there, on the surface, no one even knows they exist.
~ Silco's conversation with Deckard.
Ever wondered what it's like to drown? Story of opposites. There’s peace in water. Like it’s holding you, whispering in low tones to let it in. And every problem in the world will fade away. But then, there’s this thing… in your head, and it’s raging. Lighting every nerve with madness. To fight. To survive. And all the while this question lingers before you: `Have you had enough?` It’s funny. You could pass a lifetime without ever facing a choice like that. But it changes you forever. For that, I thank you... old friend.
~ Silco's monologue about drowning.
It's okay. We'll show them. We will show them all.
~ Silco after adopting a traumatized Powder

Trivia[]

  • Silco is the first champion in the game to be exclusive to the Teamfight Tactics mode. The reason why he was not planned for the main League of Legends is because the developers couldn't decide on how Silco would plausibly fight, and his appearance made it hard to make a silhouette to make him stand out like the other champions.
