Silver Swan is a supporting antagonist in the DC Comics universe and an enemy of Wonder Woman.
There have been three different Silver Swans since the character's debut in 1988, Helen Alexandros, Valerie Beaudry, and the current one; Vanessa Kapatelis, who became Silver Swan in 2001 in Wonder Woman (vol. 2) #171. The three believe in different ways that they are undesirable and unattractive, only to find themselves transformed into extraordinarily beautiful super-powered villains.
History[]
Helen Alexandros[]
The Silver Swan was driven to villainous acts by her jealousy of Wonder Woman's beauty and renown. Three women have been known as the Silver Swan. The first, Helen Alexandros, was granted the powers of flight and sonic voice attack by the god Mars, and she fought Wonder Woman at his behest before he withdrew her powers and she returned to normal life.
Valerie Beaudry[]
Valerie Beaudry's parents were exposed to radiation frorn nucdear tests. As a result, Valerie was born horribly deformed. At age seventeen, her onty friend throughout her entire life having been her pen-pal Maxene Sterenbuch, Beaudry was subjected to an experimet code-named Silver Swan for Armbruster International. The experiment further mutated Beaudry, giving her super-human abilities as well as making her beautiful.
Beaudry then used her new powers to kill Professor Benjarin Buchman, the man wno gave her those powers. Henry Cobb Ambruster, head of the company, manipulated Beaudry's emotions to cause her to fall in love with him, meanwhile exploting her abilties for his own purposes. Armbruster eventually maniputated Beaudry into hating Wonder Woman. He had Beaudry, as the Silver Swan, attack Wonder Woman at fair in the latter's honor in Boston.
The Silver Swan demanded that the fair turn its proceeds over to her; computer chips that Arbruster sought to acquire had secretly been mixed in with the fair's receipts. Wonder Woman fought and captured the Silver Swan, whose powers caused an explosion that separated the two of them. The Siver Swan was apparenty recovered by Armbruster's agențs. In all the turnoil, both the fair's receipts and the computer chips were lost.
Vanessa Kapatelis[]
The following Silver Swan; Vanessa Kapatelis, achieved her powers by technological means, being altered by Circe. In her case, Vanessa was manipulated using her jealousy of Wonder Woman's beauty and strength. Wonder Woman had lived with Vanessa's family for a while. Vanessa blamed her for leaving, but she had actually been forced to because Dr. Psycho was manipulating Vanessa's mother. However, as they battled Wonder Woman, the Amazon's virtue and strength made Vanessa realize the error of their ways.
Powers and Abilities[]
The Silver Swan can create powerful sound waves with her voice. Her "swan song" is powerful enough to devastate a small arsa of land with its destructive force. By creating a low-level humming, the Silver Swan can erect a protective shield about herself that can deflect bullets. Through her artfical wings, the Silver Swan can fly. She is also highly skilled at maneuvering in fight.
Other Media[]
- Vanessa Kapatelis appears in the DCAMU film Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, voiced by Marie Avgeropoulos. When her mother was killed by Veronica Cale, Vanessa blames Wonder Woman for it and became Silver Swan after joining Villainy Inc. However, the character managed to redeems herself in the end.
- An unnamed version of Silver Swan appears in the Wonder Woman '77 tie-in comics as the lead singer of a band called "Silver Swan and the Starlings".
- Vanessa Kapatelis appears as a character summon in Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure.
