Simi Shi (in Chinese: 司馬師), also known as Emperor Jing of Jin (in Chinese: 晉景帝), is a major antagonist in the 14th-century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by the late Luo Guanzhong, and its multiple adaptations. He was Sima Yi and Zhang Chunhua's eldest son, Sima Zhao's elder brother and Xiahou Hui, Lady Wu and Yang Huiyu's husband. He was named Commander of the Wei army shortly after his father's death. After his death, he passed on his leadership to his brother, Sima Zhao.

He is voiced by Ryōtarō Okiayu (who also voiced Zero and Lee Chaolan) in the Japanese version, and by Jessie James Grelle and D. Padraic in the English version.

History[]

The Sima Strikes[]

During the early years, Sima Shi is a smart and sensible child that was familiarly polite to his family so well. As a result of the time, Sima Shi and his younger brother Sima Zhao helps their father defeat Zhuge Liang in Wuzhang Plains.

Coup of Wei[]

After Zhuge Liang's death, Sima Shi was one of the heavy officials of the majority ponderous in China, metric in hoist the honor of his father. A few years later, Sima Yi started a coup to counter Cao Shuang, which he helps his father overthrow Cao Shuang and replaced as Emperor Cao Fang's regent. He was rewarded wwith the title of Marquess of Changpingxiang and became his father's assistant, although there was no record of his accomplishments in those years, except of his battle with Jiang Wei and Xiahou Ba. After Sima Yi dies, he succeded him as regent and his brother Sima Zhao supports him supreess the opposers in Wei courts.

After Sun Quan's death and was succeeded by his son Sun Liang, Sun Liang served as the new emperor of Wu empire. By now on, Sima Shi ordered Sima Zhao lead the armies to opposed Wu and stand on their region, but Zhuge Ke was able to bring a critical blow to Sima Zhao's forces when he was unguard. However, Sima Shi managed to stayed in power by humbly confessing his faults to the public and giving promotions to generals who had tried to stop his campaign (especially he punished Sima Zhao). In Hefei battle, Sima Shi successfully defeated Wu in a great battle, while that of Zhuge Ke was shaken (because of Zhuge Ke's refusal to admit his fault), Zhuge Ke died when Sun Liang and Sun Jun killed him in a coup.

When Sima Zhao nearly defeated by Jiang Wei in his invasion to Shu, Guo Huai saved him at cost of his death by Jiang Wei. In the court, some Wei loyals spread rumors about his younger brother favor so both Shi and Zhao humilliated Wei emperor Cao Fang in the court in order to make him planned an assasination behind them so they can remove him. Just as their expected, Cao Fang secrectly planned a assassination with Xiahou Xuan, Zhang Qi and Li Feng's help and they plotted to kill Sima Shi to return power to Cao Fang. Cao Fang wrote the edict with the blood from his finger and handed it over to Zhang Qi, urging him to be careful by reminding him of Dong Cheng, who tried to assassinate Cao Cao in the past. However, Sima Shi and Sima Zhao ambushed them and discovered the plot and confronted Cao Fang, who went down on his knees after seeing that he was busted and begged for forgiveness. After executing Cao Fang's three associates and strangling his wife Empress Zhang, Sima Shi dethroned Cao Fang and choose Cao Mao (suggested by Empress Guo) as new emperor. His dethronement caused the rebellion of Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin.

Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin's Rebellion[]

upon hearing Cao Fang's dethronement, Wei commander Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin raised a rebellion against Sima family, so they crossed the Huai River and headed for the spring from Shouchun, with Wu's support army. Sima Shi angered and he let Sima Zhao at Luoyang to take care of courts business while he led army by himself, despite his injury from his face getting worse and cut off.

When they arrived in Xiang County, Sima Shi sent Zhuge Dan to lead many soldiers to attack Shouchun. At the time, Sima Shi sent Hu Zun to lead the soldiers of Qingzhou and Xuzhou, but cut off the road of Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin from Xiang county to Shouchun. Sima Shi should himself led the main forces and gathered in Ruyang. Also, Sima Shi also called Deng Ai with more than 10,000 troops to Yuejia county, tempting Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin attacked. But he has to rest since his injury in his face is getting worse, but when Wen Qin's elder son, Wen Yang's raids, Sima Shi, in his anguish, worsened the condition of his eye, which came out of its orbit, causing a serious degradation of his health. Luckily for him, Deng Ai appears to fend off Wen Yang and Wen Qin, who came late and send them to Wu. Guanqiu Jian and his generals attempt to make a breakthrough but failed, forced them run to Shen County. An officer offer them a meal, but Guanqiu Jian drunk to death since he know he is gonna die, which end his rebellion

Death[]

Sima Shi returned to Xuchang but his health was worse from his injury, while he was haunted by Xiahou Xuan, Zhang Qi and Li Feng so he passed on Sima Zhao as successor before his death.

Legacy[]

In Zhuge Dan's rebellion, Sima Zhao recruited Wen Yang and Wen Hu after they defected from Zhuge Dan when he killed their father Wen Qin, despite Wen Yang's reason to Sima Shi's death. This cause Sima Yan demoted him from duty and later Zhuge Dan's maternal grandson and son of Sima Zhou, Sima Yao (司馬繇), the Duke of Dong'an (東安公), bore a grudge against Wen Yang for the downfall of his maternal grandfather so he falsely accused Wen Yang of plotting a rebellion with Yang Jun. Wen Yang was arrested and executed along with his family, later Sima Yao and his families was executed by Sima Ying, one of Eight Princes in Civil War.

After Jin was established, Sima Yan posthumously honoured his uncle as Emperor Jing of Jin

Sima Shi has no sons so he adopted Sima Zhao's second son Sima You as his heir, but Sima Yan forced him to death due to his envy to his skills, later Sima Jiong, Sima You's son become one of Eight Princes in civil War.
