~ Simon to Nigel before killing him. |
Simon Greenly is the main antagonist of the 2025 action-comedy film, Novocaine.
He is the leader of a trio of bank robbers who pull off successful heists and bank robberies throughout his spree, some of which always ended in casualties - especially on one eventful occasion where he and his comrades robbed a bank where Nathan Caine worked, dressed up as Santa Claus. He's later revealed to be the brother of Sherry Margrave, Nathan's love interest-then-girlfriend, who was just as guilty as him for her role in the former's latest heist.
He was portrayed by Ray Nicholson, who also portrayed Paul Duerson in Borderline and The Smile Entity as a hallucination version of Paul Hudson in Smile 2.
Personality[]
Simon is a defined sociopath and a strategist, coming up with the well-planned out heists set into motion but is casually straightforward and giddily sadistic, easily laughing at others' suffering and shrugging off the numerous deaths he's committed in the past. As the team's planner and leader, Simon is no doubt capable of arranging how the process and outcome will turn out, especially getting one of his comrades to time the arrival of the police, nevertheless he recklessly resort to needless violence at every chance, believing and justifying each of these acts done in the "heat of battle".
Despite being somewhat of an efficient leader, Simon has proven to be too lax and uncaring of his own crew's whereabouts and safety, especially for his own good. This is best demonstrated from his indifference to Andre's concerns for Ben and just casually shrugging off both their deaths later on, insisting on focusing on their current plans rather than actually seeking out the other members. Outside his usual criminal behavior, Simon can be more or less a slipshod and easily immature, based on the way he speaks and is easily dejected when the "vibe or mood" in the room is killed, but more so highlights how uncaring and oblivious he is to the consequences of his actions and indifference.
Although he seems to have a soft spot for Sherry, trying to cheer her up and enlighten her, Simon always never misses a chance to remind her over the kind of person she is to him but isn't, deceiving others and in his own words; "faking remorse" over being a part of his heists. Especially since he isn't above killing her or selling her out, he appoints Nathan to aim the gun at her than him when he revealed her role in trying to play him and was willing to shoot her when she turned against him or promises to hunt her down to spite Nathan after killing him.
Biography[]
There isn't much on his background compared to Sherry's backstory, but it is implied he is her adoptive brother from childhood, the unsafe family background he comes from likely contributing to his sociopathy and criminal tendencies. In adulthood, Simon was then a leader of a bank robbery team of three, two of the members being the Clark Brothers - Ben and Andre , where he and the brothers began a spree where they successfully pulled off as many heists as possible but the end result always concluded with numerous casualties and fatalities along the way, practically killing innocent people and police officers unnecessarily.
In their recent heist, he had Sherry infiltrate a bank working as a bank teller where the assistant bank manager, Nathan Caine, worked. On the day of the heist, Simon and the Clark Brothers waltzed into the bank all dressed as Santa Claus for the holiday season, only to begin violently shooting and threatening the bank customers and employees, getting everyone on the ground as he proceeds to drag the bank manager, Nigel, near the vault and force him to spill out the codes. When he simply refuses, Simon at first was baffled before viciously hitting him in the head and punching him on the floor, accidentally unveiling his fake Santa beard and his identity. Seeing that Nigel saw his face, Simon proceeds to nonchalantly shoot him in the head, killing him in front of the scared hostages.
Getting Nathan Caine dragged near the vault and tries punching him for the codes, he was not aware that he has a disorder that makes him immune to feeling pain, regardless still proceeds to beat him before Sherry, whom was still playing 'hostage', tries to intervene with her brother before she got held at gunpoint and slapped. Nathan eventually turns up and hands over the codes, unaware Sherry was part of the heist, soon before Simon knocks him unconscious as he and the Clark Brothers began taking as much money in the bags upon opening the vault. Once the police arrives, Simon takes Sherry with them as he then uses her as their 'hostage' plan worked, getting the guards to drop their guns as Simon has the Clark Brothers engage in a violent shootout, killing several cops and injuring one of them as they got away in a cruiser, with Ben being left behind in a single vehicle. Unbeknownst to them, a determined Nathan chases after them in a police cruiser.
During the getaway, Simon and Andre are seen driving away with the money before noticing Nathan behind them via Ben's warning, which the former suggests splitting up to mark loose ends and meet back at the brothers' auto repair shop, despite Andre's protests, promptly having Simon yell at him to make a left as Ben is left to deal with Nathan, who only tried to sort things out peacefully and get whereabouts for where they took Sherry. Back at the auto shop, Simon is seen arguing with Andre regarding Ben's absence and whereabouts, worrying the latter as Simon scoffs it off, later trying to comfort Sherry regarding what happened back at the heist, offering her a pack of cola gummies before throwing it aside, getting into an argument with her before setting it aside, more aligned with focusing on their next heist at Mexico.
As they prepare to leave, Simon continues acting indifferent when Andre goes out to find out what became of Ben, and once he got back to find Nathan in his home caught in a snare trap, Simon calls Andre to confirm his death from the radar, telling him someone in a suit did it and tries getting him to come back, only to be hung up when Andre commences to torture Nathan, much to Simon getting angry at him for hanging up his call. Simon later calls back to remind Andre that they'll be leaving in thirty minutes, though Nathan ends up killing him afterwards when Roscoe came to his aid. Back at the Clarks and Son's Automotive Shop, Simon and Sherry get ready to leave, still arguing over the former's actions and how she isn't like him until Nathan confronts him at gunpoint.
Realizing the glances between Nathan and Sherry, Simon spitefully reveals Sherry's role in their heist, breaking it down to Nathan that she played him despite the latter confessing that she and him had something in their relationship, something Simon scoffed off at her as he soon takes advantage of Nathan's frozen stance as he beats him mercilessly until he is unconscious. Prepping to kill him, he has Nathan's head placed under a hydraulic lift where a car was hooked onto, trying to have him crushed underneath it, laughing giddily before Sherry pulls him aside, stopping him from furthering the hydraulic lift down. Angered, he smacks her aside and holds her at gunpoint before Sherry starts calling him out again, trying to reason with him by getting him to leave freely with the money and that she'll stay with Nathan before saying she doesn't know him anymore. Having enough of his sister, Simon starts pulling the trigger up to her forehead and calls her bluff that he wouldn't do it, spitefully replying to her; "[she] doesn't know him at all", until he got shot in the back by Officer Coltraine Duffy. Later followed by Officer Mincy Langston, who apprehended Sherry and have Nathan carried away to a hospital but still needed to be apprehended too.
Unfortunately for both officers, Simon gets back up and shoots Officer Coltraine dead by the neck, later shooting Officer Mincy and wounding her hip as he makes his getaway while trying to shoot Sherry. Later shooting a paramedic dead inside the ambulance, he hijacks the vehicle with Nathan still inside it, heading onward to north harbor while Simon's unaware that Nathan was placed inside there. Throughout the chase, Simon was being followed by Sherry, Roscoe, and the injured Officer Mincy as he runs over several guards on his way to the harbor for departure. Meanwhile, finally realizing that Nathan's inside the vehicle, Simon spitefully taunts him throughout the ride as he promises him that once he kills him, he'll haunt Sherry down as a twisted promise before Nathan distracts for a moment, using defibrillators to shock him while causing the ambulance to crash. Getting up and heading inside the vehicle to drag Nathan out, they brawl against each other, physically and brutally, with Simon trying to strangle him and later fracturing his right-hand apart, exposing his wrist bone and finalizes everything with stomping his head to crush.
Simon was then shot by Sherry at the last second as both siblings fought each other with Simon trying to strangle her for the kill, coming close before Nathan gave himself another adrenaline shot and had the upper-hand in using his wrist bone to shove onto Simon's jawline, instantly killing him, avenging the deaths of Nigel and Coltraine in the process.
