“ | Don't speak, just listen. If you want to see your daughter alive again, you'll put £100,000 in used, unmarked notes of small denomination into a dark holdall. Come to the phone box on Merton Street at 4 a.m.. Come alone and on foot. If I see the police, the deal's off, the girl's dead. You're a businessman, think of this as a business transaction. ~ Hallward's audio recording regarding Verity Richardson's (staged) kidnapping. |
Simon Hallward is a major antagonist in "Arcadia", the second episode in Season 3 of Endeavour, as well as the episode's main victim.
He was a painter who took part in the extortion plan of Thelma Anne Davis and Verity Richardson, but he went too far to actually murder innocent people to achieve his goal. As a result, he was killed by his accomplices.
He was portrayed by an unknown actor.
Biography[]
Simon Hallward was a member of the House Beautiful led by Gideon Finn, but eventually, he quitted for unable to give up his original lifestyle. There, he met Thelma Anne Davis, also known as Sister Ayesha, who became his model and friend. Together with Verity Richardson, they planned to extort money from Leo Richardson and Annette Richardson, Verity's parents, through threatening notes and a staged kidnapping. Simon even recorded an audio recording for himself.
Nevertheless, the threat notes didn't work on blackmailing Leo Richardson successfully. Simon became impatient in the process and put poisonous arsenic into the food as well as ground glass into baby food, the former which caused a customer being killed. Since they didn't really try to kill anyone, Thelma and Verity planned to take down Simon, who was killed by Thelma through staging an explosion.
After Simon Hallward's death, his unused recording was later reused in Verity's staged kidnapping, which caused confusion to the police as if Hallward was still alive. However, after listening to the radio again (that was recorded with Mrs. Richardson's pledge), Morse discovered that there were several incoherent parts, including the kidnapper calling Mrs. Richardson as a businessman, and some bell chimes could be heard whenever the kidnapper began to speak, but it disappeared when Verity's scream was heard.
Morse soon deduced that the recording was recorded near House Beautiful and a church beside it, and it was recorded by Simon Hallward himself who was still alive at the time.
Trivia[]
- Simon could be seen at the very beginning of the story, creating an action painting, another link to the 1961 Tony Hancock comedy The Rebel, whose hero is seen doing the same thing in a more comic manner. However, Simon is surnamed "Hallward", which links him to a rather different character, as it is the name of the artist who paints the picture of Dorian Gray in Oscar Wilde's novel.
- Trewlove learns that Hallward had visited a pub before his death for "his usual pint of Radford's" - a reference to Radford's Brewery, where Morse investigated a murder in the 1990 Inspector Morse episode, "The Sins Of The Fathers".
