~ Simon Stagg to Detective Joe West.
Simon Stagg is a minor antagonist in season one of the CW television series The Flash.
He is a wealthy philanthropist and the CEO of Stagg Industries who is targeted by his former employee, Danton Black for stealing Black's research which led to the death of his wife, Elizabeth. He is based on the DC comics character Simon Stagg.
Simon Stagg founded Stagg Industries sometime after he graduated from Central City University. Simon attributed his success to his work in organ transference and cellular cloning, although it is later revealed that Stagg stool the research from his bio-geneticist, Danton Black and fired him to cover his tracks preventing Black from finding a cure for his wife's failing heart.
Surviving Multiplex[]
Stagg is honored at an award ceremony for his contribution to the medical community and was named Man of the Year. Stagg is escorted out of the building after giving his speech and rudely rejects Iris' request to interview him for her article. Shortly after, several masked gunmen arrive robbing those in attendance and escape much to the dismay of Barry Allen. The masked men are later revealed to be Danton Black's copies having gained the ability to replicate himself due to S.T.A.R. Labs' Particle Accelerator and is out for revenge against Stagg.
The next day, Stagg meets with detective Joe West and his partner, Eddie Thawne and informed that his head of security, was found dead in an alley earlier that morning. They also question him about Black, believing him to be behind the attacks, but Stagg assures the two policemen that Black is a scientist, not a killer. The gun men then show up and fire their weapons at Stagg, but he is pulled out of the way and taken out of the building by Eddie. At CCPD, Joe once again urges Stagg to consider going into protective custody, but he refuses and leaves after being insulted by Harrison Wells who he has an unfriendly history with. Stagg increases security at Stagg Industries and hears gunshots going off while working in his office. He goes out to investigate and finds two of his men unconscious on the floor and comes face to face with Danton and his clones. Black aims his gun at Stagg only for him to be whisked away to safety by Barry Allen who tells Stagg to remain inside his office. He then speeds away much to Simon's amazement.
Death and Legacy[]
Following Black's death, Stagg is once again in his office ponding over what he has witnessed. He is visited by Wells and they talk about the attack, as well as the man that saved Stagg's life by running super-fast. Stagg asks Wells if he has seen him too, which he admits. Stagg begins comparing Barry's power to that of the Greek God Mercury and tells Wells that he intends to capture this "man in the red mask" believing he holds the key to changing the human race. Wells reveals that the man's name is The Flash and rises from his wheelchair catching Stagg off guard. He is then stabbed and killed by Wells to prevent him from interfering with his own plans for Barry.
Several months later, Stagg's disappearance is investigated by reporter Mason Bridge, whom Wells also kills to keep his involvement a secret.
In 2017, Stagg's company is bought out by an unknown party due to bankruptcy.
Personality[]
Simon is perceived as charismatic philanthropist to the general public which is a façade he maintains to hide his greedy and ambitious nature. He is shown to be arrogant, selfish, power-hungry and immoral paying absolutely no mind to the lives he destroys to further his own career, like when he stole Danton Black's research preventing the latter from finding a cure for his dying wife's degenerative coronary disease. Simon's negative qualities ultimately led to his death at the hands of Eobard Thawne (under there guise of Harrison Wells at the time) as he recklessly admitted his intentions to capture Barry Allen, even though he saved him from Black, so that he could find a way to exploit his powers.
Trivia[]
Simon Stagg is known in the comics as the man responsible for Rex Mason's transformation into the superhero Metamorpho who does not appear in the Arrowverse. However, a company called Metamorpho Chemical was used as a hideout by the Dollmaker, in season 2 of Arrow.
