Simon Tanner is a fictional character in the BBC medical drama Casualty, appearing as the secondary antagonist of series 22.
He is portrayed by Paul Fox.
Biography[]
Simon was employed at Holby City Hospital in May 2008 to manage a new minor injuries unit, a small area of the emergency department. This was done to provide treatment at the financial expense of the NHS. Senior charge nurse Charlie Fairhead took issue to the department due to the patients being viewed more as customers.
A patient Kris Kempt died as a result of Simon's negligence. He tampered with Kris' medical notes in order to make it look like Doctor Maggie Coldwell was responsible and didn't order the correct medical tests. It was in fact Simon who convinced Kris not to take the tests, resulting in his death. Maggie ends up getting into trouble with the hospital and faces suspension and an inquest.
Simon admitted the truth to Executive Director Marilyn Fox. Marilyn chose to cover it up and allow Maggie to take the fall, fearing for the reputation of the hospital and the board. She blackmailed doctor Zoe Hanna into staying silent about the forgery, or she would expose her affair with Sean Anderson.
During the coroner's court inquest into Kris' death, Simon's forgery was exposed and Zoe Hanna stood up to Marilyn and revealed the truth at the expense of her and Sean's affair being exposed. Simon was dismissed from the hospital and the Minor Injuries Unit was dismantled.
