Simone Lightbourne is a major antagonist in the post-apocalyptic TV series The 100. She is one of the tyrannical immortal rulers of Sanctum known as the Primes alongside her husband and daughter.
In the sixth season, Simone is in her fifth host and is known as Simone Lightbourne VI when the people from Earth arrive on Sanctum. With Nightblood becoming rarer and the discovery of Nightbloods amongst the Eligius IV crew, the Primes, led by Russell, plot to use the survivors of Earth to create new hosts for themselves and continue their existence. Russell and his wife Simone sacrifice Clarke Griffin in order to resurrect their daughter Josephine whose last host was murdered six years before and Josephine succeeds in manipulating Abby Griffin and Clarke's friends. After Josephine goes missing, Simone spearheads the effort to create new Nightblood, but is stopped by the intervention of Marcus Kane, Raven Reyes and Indra. Upon her return to Sanctum, Simone is assassinated by an angry father who learns the truth about the Primes from Gaia and Echo. Simone is subsequently resurrected once again in the body of Abby Griffin, but is killed for good when Clarke blows all of the Primes aside from Russell into outer space, putting them beyond any hope of resurrection.
Personality[]
In her first life, Simone is shown to be a kind and caring person, particularly towards her family and the children amongst the Sanctum colonists.
However, two-hundred and thirty-six years of immortality greatly changed Simone into a cold, ruthless person who is willing to do anything to survive. Along with her daughter, Simone is known to have enacted some of the Primes more extreme policies such as burning people at the stake and weaponizing the Red Sun toxin. After her resurrection in Abby Griffin's body, Simone advocates for killing all of the people on Eligius IV, an act of genocide that her husband balks at but which she has no hesitation in suggesting. However, she is not entirely cold-hearted, balking at the idea of erasing the Lee family's Mind Drives and only sadly doing so after pressure from Josephine.
When cornered, Simone resorts to posing as her host in an attempt to trick Clarke, but neither the other Primes nor Clarke ultimately buy it. Simone's act quickly fails when she can't name Clarke's father so she resorts to turning her gun on Clarke rather than just surrendering, leading to the final death of her and her companions.
Biography[]
Background[]
Simone grew up on a farm on Earth before eventually marrying Russell Lightbourne. The two had a daughter, Josephine, and were chosen for the Eligius III colony mission.
Gaining Immortality[]
While colonizing the habitable moon of Sanctum, a Red Sun eclipse occurs that sends Simone's husband Russell Lightbourne into a psychotic fit. Simone is the first to fall victim to Russell shortly before he kills their daughter and many of the other colonists.
Over the next twenty-five years, Russell and Gabriel Santiago work on resurrecting those who died using their Mind Drives. By using Nightblood hosts who have been mind wiped, the two eventually manage to resurrect Josephine and the other deceased colonists, including Simone.
Ruler of Sanctum[]
For the next two-hundred and thirty-six years, Simone rules Sanctum alongside her husband and the other resurrected colonists, now known as the Primes who are revered as living gods by their people. Alongside her daughter, Simone takes on a more extreme leadership style, weaponizing the Red Sun toxin, instituting the eugenics project of Oblation and burning people at the stake. After Gabriel destroys the remaining Nightblood embryos in an attempt to stop the cycle of resurrections, Simone tries to have him burned at the stake, but he manages to escape with the help of Ryker Desai. Gabriel subsequently becomes the near-mythical leader of the Children of Gabriel revolution.
When Clarke Griffin arrives with the survivors of Earth, Simone and Russell take the opportunity to resurrect Josephine, whose last host had died six years before, in Clarke's body out of fear that it would otherwise take them around fifty-four years to bring her back with the growing rareness of Nightbloods. Josephine is then assigned to discover how many Nightbloods are amongst the group and she discovers that Abby Griffin can make Nightbloods. As part of the various deals that she makes, Josephine compels a reluctant Simone to erase the Mind Drives of the Lee family so that they can be given to John Murphy, his girlfriend Emori and to Abby so that she can use one to save the life of Marcus Kane.
After Abby agrees to create Nightblood for the Primes, Simone accompanies her to Eligius IV where Raven Reyes reluctantly helps finish the serum. Simone mind wipes a young man named Gavin and helps Abby to resurrect Kane in his body. However, uncomfortable with his resurrection and the moral implications, Kane enlists Raven and Indra's help to stop the Primes. Intercepting Simone's return to Sanctum, Kane takes the Nightblood serum and has Indra float him, blowing Kane and the serum into outer space.
Assassination[]
Returning to Sanctum, Simone reveals Clarke's death to Abby before her people are detained. At the same time, Echo and Gaia foment a revolt against the Primes by revealing the truth to people with the reluctant help of Ryker. Tai, an angry father who lost his child to Oblation, attacks Simone during a meeting with the Primes and assassinates her by stabbing Simone in the throat with a broken glass.
With Simone's death coming soon after the assassination of Miranda Mason at the hands of Madi Griffin under the influence of Sheidheda, Russell decides to burn the entire group at the stake as punishment. At the last minute, John Murphy realizes that they can use bone marrow transplants to make people into Nightbloods and resurrect the Primes. Russell releases the group, but still executes Tai for murdering Simone. With the first dose, Russell has Ryker turn Echo into a Nightblood in order to use her as Simone's new host. Although Ryker partially succeeds, Echo is rescued by Gaia and Nathan Miller before she can be mind wiped.
Resurrection and Final Death[]
In order to protect Madi, Abby turns herself into a Nightblood in order to extract the last doses of bone marrow. During this time, Clarke returns, having killed Josephine for good and posing as her in order to infiltrate Sanctum. As part of this, Clarke claims to everybody that Clarke is dead for good, causing Abby to swear revenge upon Russell which he believes as one parent to another. As a result, Russell mind wipes Abby to become the new host of Simone.
Shortly thereafter, Simone is resurrected in Abby's body, much to the grief of Clarke and Abby's other loved ones. Simone spearheads the effort to retreat into space, threatening Madi to get Raven to agree to fly them to Eligius IV. Upon arrival, Simone argues for killing Madi due to her influence over Wonkru and then convinces her husband to kill all of the people in cryosleep using the mind wipe solution, eliminating a threat to them at the same time as securing themselves hundreds of possible hosts.
With the Lightbournes preparing to commit genocide, Clarke desperately attempts to discover if her mother had survived the mind wipe, Abby having once had a neural mesh like Clarke did. However, Russell informs Clarke that he had confirmed that the neural mesh had been destroyed by an EMP years earlier before resurrecting Simone. Clarke drops her act as Josephine and flees, telling the devastated parents that she truly is sorry for their loss.
Sending her husband to get Madi as leverage, Simone leads the other Primes and two of their guards in tracking Clarke to an airlock. Having rigged the airlock, Clarke threatens to blow them all into outer space if they don't surrender. Grabbing a gun, Simone turns on the other Primes, pretending that she is Abby who had survived after all. Although the others drop their guns when Simone shoots the floor, Clarke tests her by asking her "mother" what her father's name is. Unable to answer, Simone turns her gun on Clarke who triggers the airlock, blowing the Primes and their guards into outer space. Simone grabs onto Clarke who is tethered to a wall, but after staring at Simone for a moment, Clarke shoves Simone off of her, accepting that her mother is truly gone. Simone is blown into space, killing her for the final time and putting Simone beyond recovery for another resurrection. From the bridge windows, Russell watches as Simone and the other Primes float off into deep space.
As a result of Simone and Josephine's deaths, Russell falls into a deep depression and becomes suicidal. In an attempt to get Clarke to kill him, he returns Abby's things to her and reminds Clarke of her mother being killed to bring Simone back. However, Clarke ultimately restrains herself from killing Russell and sets fire to the Sanctum palace instead, burning, amongst other things, a painting of Simone in her original body.
