Villain Overview

You are pathetic and weak!
~ Sindel's battle cry.
We are bounded in death. You will join us...and I will give you a proper upbringing!
~ Sindel when Cassie mentions that she killed her own daughter Kitana.

Sindel is a character in the Mortal Kombat series. She is the mother of Kitana, the former queen of Edenia, and the majority of the games she was on the side of good, but in the 2011 Mortal Kombat game, she was a supporting antagonist, and as a minor antagonist in Mortal Kombat X. She is also a major antagonist in Mortal Kombat III, and an anti-heroine in Mortal Kombat: Deception and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. She also later returns as a major antagonist in the DLC story mode Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath.

She was voiced by Lani Minella in Mortal Kombat (2011), Kelly Hu in Mortal Kombat X (who also voiced D'Vorah in the same game), and Mara Junot in Mortal Kombat 11.

Biography

Mortal Kombat (2011)

In the Alternate Timeline, Sindel was declared dead. But after Shao Kahn lost in Mortal Kombat, Quan Chi suggested invasion. But in order to do that Quan Chi has to resurrect Sindel, the woman who cast a spell through her own death, so Shao Kahn can't leave Outworld and enter Earthrealm, thus Earthrealm itself wouldn't suffer as have Sindel's forgotten kingdom of Edenia. When Quan Chi resurrected her, Quan Chi told her that her daughter sided with the warriors of Earthrealm. She then stated that Kitana is no longer her daughter, and sided with her husband, Shao Kahn.

After the death of Motaro, Sindel went to Earthrealm and finish what Motaro started. But before she did, Shao Kahn suck the soul out of Shang Tsung and gave his power to Sindel giving her more strength and abilitys during the fight the heroes tried to fight her but sindel was to strong capable of defeating them easily without getting hit. She was then faced against her daughter who was overpowered by Sindel by brutally beating her without hesitation. Sindel killed; Jax, Kabal, Jade, Smoke, Stryker, Cyber Sub-Zero and her daughter, Kitana with little effort. She was then killed by Nightwolf by sacrificing his life to end her life. However Quan Chi resurrected all the heroes who lost their lives as well as Sindel and he forced them to serve him for all time.

Mortal Kombat X

For the next 25 years, Sindel continued to serve Quan Chi. Sindel became one of the main enforcers of Shinnok. In the early part of the game during a flash back Sindel, Stryker and Kabal show up at Raiden's temple With Quan Chi and a demon army. The Revenants attack Raiden and Fujin who are defending the temple both of the gods defeat the demons and then battle the three Revenants. Raiden defeats Kabal first Fujin defeats Stryker second and Raiden defeats Sindel third Quan Chi then summons Shinnok. After Sonya, Johnny and Kenshi show up to help the two gods they defeat Shinnok but Quan Chi, Sindel and the other two revenants escape.

Sindel appears in chapter six of MKX along with the revenants of Liu Kang, Kitana, Kung Lao, Smoke, Kabal, Nightwolf and Stryker. They were escorting Quan Chi and got attacked by Jax, Kenshi, Sareena and Special Forces who were trying to stop them from getting Shinnok's amulet.

Unlike Stryker, Nightwolf and Kabal who returned to Shinnok's palace and have been MIA Sindel showed up in Earthrealm with Liu Kang, Kitana, Smoke and Kung Lao to help Shinnok take control of Raiden's temple to use his portal. She and the other Revenants fought and attacked Bo' Rai Cho and Raiden but she and the other Revenants lost after Cassie Cage and her team showed up.

With their defeat the revenants returned to the Netherrealm. After Raiden purifying the Jinsei the thunder god had become a darker version of himself and traveled to the Netherrealm now ruled by Liu Kang and Kitana. Raiden who is now more intimidating and more menacing spoke with the new rulers alone without Sindel, Kung Lao, Smoke and the other revenants being present. The dark thunder god gave a warning to the emperor and empress about what would happen to those who dare to attack Earthrealm this includes the revenants who now follow Liu Kang and Kitana.

Mortal Kombat 11

Sindel is a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 11 as part of the Kombat Pack. Although she was leaked prior to this date, she was formally revealed on June 1st, 2019, alongside Nightwolf, Spawn and two other then-unknown guest characters (revealed to be the Joker and the Terminator).

In this game, her backstory was retconned revealing that she betrayed and killed King Jerrod when Shao Kahn threatened to take over her kingdom. It was also implied that Quan Chi murdered Sindel.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath

As a Revenant, Sindel is first seen confronting her enemies in the Bone Temple as they lay captured. Seeking revenge on the past version of Nightwolf for her demise, she plans to kill him as well, before her nemesis frees himself and knocks her out. With Sheeva being convinced to revive her, she tells Kitana that she never abandoned her family and was actually murdered by Quan Chi, as well as spinning a tall tale of being manipulated by Shao Kahn. She then joins the heroes.

Along with Nightwolf, they both decide to stay to look for the Crown of Kronika. However, Cetrion appears and planned to kill the two, but is defeated by Sindel. She later heads off to Outworld to aid her daughter.

Secretly shaming Kitana for her "foolishness" to Shang Tsung, she later freed Shao Kahn from being tortured, defeated Sheeva, convinced the other Shokan that Kitana was a traitor, and restored her husband in the Soul Chamber.

The Shokan then attack Sonya Blade and her forces, with the former being knocked out. She then defeats Johnny and Cassie Cage, capturing them and storming the hero's boats. Sindel and Shao Kahn defeat Kotal Kahn, and Jade, before revealing to Kitana that she killed Jerrod herself and married Shao Kahn on her own desires. Sindel then defeats her and Liu Kang, with the former imprisoned and the latter cripped by Shao Kahn. Kotal Khan is also murdered by Shao Kahn.

After this huge blow to the heroes, Shao Kahn and Sindel rally Outworld's forces, with some attacking the other armies the some others going with Shang Tsung to get into Kronika's keep. Following the deaths of the revenants, Sindel and Shao Kahn plan to defeat Kronika as well, only to be betrayed by Shang Tsung and their souls absorbed into the malicious mage.

Appearance

Even though Sindel is over thousands of years old, she still has a beautiful yet Gothic look. She has white hair that could extend if she wants, she wears a purple type of armor slit down the middle revealing cleavage Sindel has a slight muscular build and her eyes have no visible pupils.

Personality

As a revenant, Sindel when she is normal self not being controlled. The Edenain queen seems to always be about being reunited with her daughter. Both Sindel's also wish for her husband to return as well. Like most of the other revenants Sindel seems to delight in the things that she does. She shows loyalty to Quan Chi because he reunited Sindel with her daughter.

Although Raiden didn't get Sindel killed she wants to make him pay and suffer for what he did to her daughter. Sindel died before she could be freed from Shao Khan's control Sindel like the other revenants blame Raiden for the current state of things.

In Mortal Kombat 11, Sindel still has her villainous traits not only from being resurrected by Quan Chi, but it was revealed she was never on the side of good to begin with. She is also shown to have some sexual interest, most notably when she confronts Jax or Johnny Cage in her intros.

Trivia

  • Sindel fought Black Canary in the popular internet show DEATH BATTLE and lost.
  • In Mortal Kombat 11, Sindel's retconned backstory was met with disdain from the fanbase, due to the fact of the developers changing Sindel from a good figure manipulated and controlled by evil forces to being devious and cruel from the start.
  • She is the first character in the Mortal Kombat series who used the power of flight as both a move used in fights and as a win pose.
  • Sindel was one of several MK3 characters who were not officially named until the game neared completion. During production, she was nicknamed "Muchacha" and "The Bride" by the programmers.
    • The "The Bride" reference is actually rather telling of kung fu cinema's impact on the Mortal Kombat franchise as a whole; one of the inspirations for Sindel's character is derived from The Bride with White Hair, a 1993 film from Hong Kong. The title character, Lian Nichang, is shown towards the later portion of the movie as transforming from black haired bride-to-be into a vicious witch with white hair.
  • Her "That was fun!" quote from her Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Friendship was used in the second Mortal Kombat movie.
  • She is the first character in the Mortal Kombat series who used the power of flight as both a move used in fights and as a win pose.
  • Sindel was one of the characters that were sent flying off the pyramid by Shang Tsung's "Flaming Skull" attack in the opening of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
  • In Mortal Kombat: Deception, upon entering her holding cell, Sindel tells Shujinko "You are a bit too old to be in Shao Kahn's military, are you not". This scene mimics the Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in which Princess Leia tells Luke Skywalker, disguised as a stormtrooper, "Aren't you a little short for stormtrooper?".
  • In Mortal Kombat (2011), Sindel can be seen briefly behind (possibly) one of Quan Chi's spawned skeletons, with a sword in her chest.
  • In Mortal Kombat (2011), a broken statue of Sindel in the background of Jade's Desert arena.
  • Although she has a pair of completely white eyes, in her Mortal Kombat 3 ending, she actually has black irises.
    • In Mortal Kombat 11, this is also somewhat true when she is in her non-Revenant form.
  • In MK 2011, Sindel, along with Quan Chi, Jax Briggs, and Jade, is one of the few characters whose X-Ray Move does not make the opponent bleed.
    • In Mortal Kombat (2011), Sindel's X-Ray Move is one of the few that does not damage the opponent's skull.
  • Sindel is one of the four characters whose special moves are affected by Headless Kombat, the others being Sonya Blade, Kabal and Kung Lao.
    • Sindel is also the most affected character. She loses four moves: High Fireball, Low Fireball, Hair Whip and Yell.
  • In every game except Mortal Kombat (2011), Sindel's "Yell" move would cause the opponent to float in the air for a free hit. However, in Mortal Kombat (2011), it just stuns them.
  • In Mortal Kombat (2011), if Sindel is transformed by a Babality in her primary costume, she will not lose any part of her hairline, while in her alternate costume, she will lose the most part of her hairline and only her ponytail will stay.
  • In MK 2011, if Sindel performs her "Mouthful" Fatality on a masked character or a Cyber Ninja, a sound will be heard when she inserts her hand in the enemy's mouth. This is possibly the sound of the mask or the armor being torn or broken.
  • In the opening of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Sindel is seen fighting Jarek.
  • Her "Mouthful" Fatality is the first one in which Sindel uses her "Star Scream" powers as a Fatality.
  • Sindel's regal hair brush relic in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is a reference to her Hair Whip powers that had been absent in the move list.
  • Sindel along with D'Vorah, Nitara and Cetrion are the only female characters to have the power of flight.
  • Sindel's Hara-Kiri in MK:D was listed as #8 in a ScrewAttack list of the Top 10 Worst Mortal Kombat Fatalities.
  • In a technical sense, Sindel is one of the few characters to be dead in both the original and current timelines.
  • In Injustice 2, she is mentioned by both Sub-Zero and Raiden who appear as guest characters. Both will compare her to Black Canary, while Raiden states that Starfire reminds him of the Edenian queen.
  • In the new timeline as of Mortal Kombat 11, Sindel's past backgrounds and pre-Revenant alignment has been retconned.
    • Based on her intro dialogues in MK11, she is likely the only evil character who openly refuses to be Kronika's ally. This makes her a polar opposite to the present-day Jax, who only joined Kronika's side reluctantly prior to finding out the truth from past Raiden.
  • In MK11, interactions with Skarlet reveal that Skarlet not only wishes to become Shao Kahn's second-in-command, but also his Queen.
  • In MK11, interactions with D'Vorah reveal Sindel considers Mileena her daughter, similar to Shao Kahn.
  • In MK11, interactions with Sub-Zero reveal more of his Cryomancer heritage, revealing that Sindel banished the Cryomancers from Edenia during her rule with King Jerrod.
    • This is considered to be a retcon, since Sub-Zero's bios from Mortal Kombat: Deception and another interaction with Sub-Zero and Skarlet reveal that Sub-Zero's ancestors were indeed from Outworld.
      • A possible theory about this interaction is that Sindel is lying to him as it is a part of her dubious nature, although this should be taken with a grain of salt.
  • In MK11, interactions with many of the male fighters reveal Sindel to be rather sexually interested in many of them, most notably Johnny Cage.
    • Sindel continues this when interacting with Sonya Blade, to where Sonya responds with annoyance and anger.
    • Ironically, the only male fighter she seems not interested in and rejects is Erron Black, who regularly hits on the female fighters.
  • In MK11, Sindel is one of the few characters whose uppercut is from the use of a weapon and not a literal uppercut, resulting in her being one of the few characters that does not literally uppercut the opponent's head off when performing the "Klassic" Brutality.
  • In MK11, Sindel, alongside her DLC counterparts Shang Tsung and Nightwolf, will have a role in the Aftermath Story Mode DLC.
  • In MK11, the "Krushing Blow" version of Sindel's "Scream" can activate on airborne opponent, which in turn will defy the logic of how the attack connects, as the opponent will be in the air then teleport to the ground standing up straight, where their skull becomes destroyed due to the "Krushing Blow" despite being airborne.
