NOTE: This article regards the Arcane TV Series version of Singed. For his video game counterpart, see here.

I thought you understood. The mutation must survive.
~ Singed to Viktor about Rio.
Why does anyone commit acts others deem unspeakable? For love.
~ Singed revealing his reasons for commiting his crimes.

Dr. Corin Reveck, better known as Singed, is the secondary antagonist of Netflix's 2021 animated series Arcane, which is set in the League of Legends universe.

Once a brilliant alchemist at the Piltover Academy, Singed was dismissed under mysterious circumstances and now resides in Zaun, where he would invent the drug known as Shimmer. He seeks to ultimately find a cure for death to revive his daughter through his twisted experiments.

He is also the former mentor of Viktor, the father of Orianna Reveck, and the creator and arch-nemesis of Warwick, who was previously known as Vander.

He is voiced by Brett Tucker.

History[]

One such mystery caught my attention: The curious dismissal of a revered Academy alchemist. Unparalleled, by all accounts, and no mention of his crime. This led to one other missing puzzle piece whose absence has always gnawed at my mind: Who invented Shimmer? We have our answer now, don't we, Dr. Reveck?
~ Caitlyn describing Singed's backstory.

Early exile[]

Long before Piltover's bicentennial Progress Day, Dr. Reveck was one of Piltover's most revered scientists - a respected colleague and partner to Heimerdinger - before he was dismissed from the Academy under mysterious circumstances. It is implied that they parted ways due to Reveck's illegal and increasingly unethical experiments, which were done in the name of treating his ailing daughter, Orianna. Despite Reveck's best efforts, his daughter eventually died anyway. Reveck brought his daughter to a hidden cave on the outskirts of Piltover, where he built a new lab in exile and kept Orianna's body preserved in a chemtech pod, safely hidden and locked away within a secret room as he began to look for a way to bring her back.

Having abandoned his old life and his old name, Reveck continued his research in secret, at one point studying a genetically-mutated lizard named Rio. When the young Viktor accidentally discovered him, Reveck approached the young boy, recognizing him as a lonely, gifted mind and a kindred spirit. He revealed that Rio was sick and dying, which he had been attempting to prevent. Viktor offered to help him save Rio, but when the project was complete and he returned with Reveck's requested materials, Viktor discovered Rio in sheer torture, horrifying the him. When Viktor asked him why, Reveck claimed he thought Viktor "understood" the implications of their work, and the young boy ran away crying.

Contract with Silco[]

Years later, Reveck was hired by Silco to invent Shimmer, a drug-like compound which turned its user nearly-invincible and gave them superhuman strength. In one of his experiments, Reveck placed a cat in the same cage as a rat and then fed the rat a Shimmer sample, causing it to mutate into a horrifying beast and eat the cat. Reveck was also present when Silco gave a Shimmer sample to Deckard, and continued to produce Shimmer in Silco's factory from that point forward.

Later on, Reveck was caught Powder's monkey bomb explosion, as it set the entire Shimmer factory ablaze and blew up directly in his face. This event left the alchemist burned and scarred, and from that point forth he would be known as Singed, the decrepit, mysterious doctor covered in scars and bandages.

Post-time skip[]

After the bicentennial Progress Day, Singed appears once again, continuing to work alone in his lab as he uses Shimmer in order to keep Rio alive inside a jar. He receives a visit from a terminally ill and desperate Viktor, who had been struggling to make a breakthrough on his latest experiment. Viktor shares his Hexcore research with Singed, who comes to the conclusion that the problem resides in the nature of the subjects, as opposed to the methods. Taking notice of Viktor's declining health, he gives him a vial of Shimmer, claiming it will make him strong enough to undergo the Hexcore's transmutation but at the cost of "love and legacy" and the respect of all those in Piltover.

Later, Silco barges into Singed's laboratory with a near-death Jinx, whom he begs to save her, despite Singed's warnings that he may lose her. He sedates Silco with an injection to prevent him from interfering with the procedure, claiming that he too knows what it's like to have a daughter. During the long and painful procedure, Singed injects Jinx with a large amount of Shimmer, infusing her with superhuman abilities but worsening her hallucinations and already unstable mental state. Upon awakening, Silco threatens Singed, who simply remarks that he "saved her life".

Creation of the Beast[]

In the aftermath of Silco's death and Jinx's attack on the Council, Singed is seen in his lab, holding a locket with a picture of his daughter, while he looks up at his latest creation: A mutated, monstrous beast chained and hanging from his laboratory's ceiling. It is revealed in a series of flashbacks how Singed created the beast. First, he traveled to a snowy forest where he kills a two-headed murk wolf. Then, he combined the heart of the wolf with a massive human corpse (later revealed to be Vander, who was useful for the experiment due to his survivor's will and high tolerance for pain). Singed then provided the specimen with a blood transfusion through tubes in his own arm. All this culminated in the transmutation, resurrection, and completion of Warwick, a horrifying, bloodthirsty wolf-man with a regenerative physiology and cybernetic enhancements built from chemtech.

Singed is later seen attending Sevika's rally by Vander's statue, where he and many others are captured by Noxians and Piltovan Enforcers, who are being led by Rictus. Before Singed is taken away, he cuts his palm with a scalpel, awakening Warwick, whom he lures with his scent. After Jinx frees the prisoners of Stillwater, Singed locks his cell back up, anticipating the beast's arrival and subsequent rampage throughout the prison. He observes Warwick's battle with Jinx, and realizes she was the missing catalyst he needed in order to restore Vander's mind. After Warwick leaves and Jinx escapes once again, Singed is the only one left in the prison, attracting the attention of Ambessa Medarda and Commander Caitlyn Kiramman.

Advisor to Ambessa[]

Ambessa and Caitlyn, noticing the trail of blood leading to his cell, realize that Singed is the beast's creator and therefore the one responsible for the carnage at Stillwater. Hoping to weaponize his talents, Ambessa decides to recruit Singed to work for her and recover his beast, whom Singed described as having once been man, well-respected in life but one who had become a "victim of great tragedy". Caitlyn, still wary of the alchemist, does an investigation of his past and deduces he is Corin Reveck, and the inventor of Shimmer. Singed, under threat from Caitlyn, shows them the secret chamber in his lab where he is preserving his daughter, explaining that his crimes were all done with the goal of bringing her back to life.

Singed eventually constructs a tracker to find Warwick and leads Ambessa and her forces to Viktor's underground commune, where they encounter Huck. Realizing Warwick is in Viktor's care, Singed decides to negotiate with the Herald, offering Viktor a cure to stabilize his declining powers in exchange for the beast. When Viktor refuses, Singed returns to Ambessa, making a serum that will prevent Viktor from restoring Vander's mind. Before Singed is able to inject Warwick with it, he is betrayed by Caitlyn, who incapacitates him. He is later seen standing over the fires and wreckage of Viktor's commune, watching as Ambessa's forces battle the crazed Warwick.

In the aftermath of the battle and Isha's hex-explosion, Singed treats Ambessa's men but is unable to save Rictus from the injuries he'd sustained fighting Warwick. He is, however, able to sustain Viktor in a giant shimmer pod, readying a process that would allow a blood transfusion he had described between the Herald and the beast. When Viktor regains consciousness, he speaks to Ambessa and Singed and strikes a bargain with them, revealing that he has the power to not only speak through his fallen followers, but also possesses the ability to transform people into living mechanical dolls. Later on, Viktor asks Singed to "begin the process", and Singed injects Warwick with his serum, erasing Vander's consciousness and completing Viktor's physical transformation.

Singed is not present for the final assault on Piltover. However, the presence of hulking, Shimmer-enhanced soldiers is evidence that the doctor continued to work with Ambessa up until her death, using his knowledge of medicine and chemical enhancements to the Noxians' benefit. After the finale, it is revealed that Singed has not only gotten away with all his crimes but had also successfully resurrected his daughter, Orianna, as a mechanical clockwork ballerina, likely replicating the same transformation used for Viktor and his evolved followers. As the Noxian forces of House Medarda leave Piltover, Singed remains with his daughter as the two of them listen to her music box.

Personality[]

SInged is shown to be a very cold and calculating man. He always speaks in a soft spoken yet affable tone and takes his work as a scientist seriously . Consequently, this has left him with ethical boundaries in his work. He is shown to be willingly keep the creature Rio alive using painful means, has no problems having Shimmer used as drug that pollutes the streets, and most heartlessly has no qualms about turning Vander into Warwick for the sake of his research.

While most would consider him a monster, Singed is shown to be cooperative with others, should they approach him for help. He helps Silco by inventing Shimmer, and maintains a semblance of collegial relationship with Viktor, before eventually entering the service of Ambessa's Noxians. He is shown to be polite, as he tells the young Viktor not be afraid of Rio, and later takes a genuine curiosity in his scientific breakthroughs. He also sedated Silco prior to his experiment with Jinx, both because he knew he would interfere, but also to spare him from seeing Jinx in horrendous pain. He is shown to take a gentle tone with children in particular, likely because they remind him of his daughter, which reveals a sentimentality hidden beneath his cold apathy. He reassures the frightened Isha as they are being brought to Stillwater Hold, and a flashback shows him reading bedtime stories to his daughter next to her preservation pod. He cares deeply about his daughter, His mission reveals a tragic obsession, as he is willing to commit any unspeakable acts for the sake of completing his work. His goal is also a more well intetioned one as he seeks to not only cure his daughter of death but the entire human race, hoping to help evolve humanity past this primal fear.

Trivia[]

  • Singed's name is an anagram for the word design, a nod of how he was one of the first champions to be designed.
    • The name could also mean something that's scorched or slightly burnt, as was shown in Arcane. In both the show and the game, he is often seen being covered in wrappings, which cover his disfigured face.
  • Singed is made slightly more sympathetic than he is in the lore due to the reveal that he is Orianna's father, Corin Reveck.
  • In his lore, Singed is stated to regard Hextech with a certain disgust, believing chemtech to be superior. This differs from his portrayal in Arcane, where he expresses a deep fascination in Viktor's invention of the Hexcore and even offers to help him complete his work.
  • While Singed is an alchemist, he is also shown to have a knack for tinkering, as he examines the gears and craftsmanship of Viktor's toy boat and was able to construct an intricate clockwork music box and hidden key within his locket.
    • This could be a reference to Orianna's biography, which describes her father, Corin Reveck, as an elderly tinkerer.
  • Of all the characters, Singed is the only one who gets a happy ending (as majoirty of the characters get a bittersweet ending) in the series, since he suceeded in managed to bring back his daughter from death and escape freely from his crimes.
