~ Singularity to Bayonetta. |
Singularity is the main antagonist of the 2022 action-adventure game Bayonetta 3 and Jeanne's story in the 2023 prequel Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.
He is the creator and leader of the Homunculi, who seeks to become a powerful deity by destroying every universe in the Multiverse and merging them with the Alphaverse.
He was voiced by Toshihiko Seki in Japanese, and by Chris Cox in English.
Personality[]
Driven by his vain arrogance, Singularity is a cruel entity seeking nothing but pure power. He is also shown to be highly manipulative, as he used the dead Sigurd as a "vessel" for him to impersonate so when Jeanne "rescues" him, he could kill her and seal away Bayonetta in the Alphaverse once all of the Chaos Gears were collected.
Biography[]
Origins[]
Long ago, the people of the Alphaverse constructed an artificial human from an anomaly in advanced plants used for the production of artificial body parts. The android, however, garnered self-awareness and created his own race of artificial beings called Homunculi, destroying all life on his planet in the process. Soon after, he discovered that the World of Chaos was made up of multiple universes stacked upon each other. He sought to destroy all of the Multiverse, fusing them into the Alphaverse to strengthen himself and conquer the Trinity of Realities.
As he invaded the other universes, Singularity came into conflict with the Arch-Eves, a person strong enough to overturn fate. In most of these universes, the Arch-Eve was Bayonetta. Singularity proceeded to hunt down multiple Bayonettas across the Multiverse, as killing the Arch-Eve led to the destruction of their universe in the process. In the Beta 0 universe, after killing the Bayonetta of said world, her daughter Viola escaped to another universe using the last world bridge.
Bayonetta 3[]
Singularity chases Viola to the universe where the events of Bayonetta 3 take place, sending countless Homunculi to find and kill her and Bayonetta. During the invasion, Singularity kills Dr. Midmyers Sigurd, a scientist who was in contact with his other universe counterparts. Singularity used Sigurd's body as a core for his fortress, the Aureole, while also crafting himself a new physical body.
To stop Singularity, Viola and Bayonetta team up to collect Chaos Gears that can lead them to the Alphaverse. Their search leads them across other universes while the Homunculi pursue them. Despite their efforts, each alternative Bayonetta is killed. Meanwhile, Jeanne is tasked with finding Sigurd.
Eventually, Bayonetta, Jeanne, and Viola collect all the Chaos Gears and open access to the Alphaverse with the help of Sigurd. However, they realize too late that they fell for a trap and Sigurd was merely a corpse controlling the Aureole. Singularity kills Jeanne before sealing Bayonetta and Viola in the Alphaverse. He then proceeds to continue his destruction of the Multiverse.
With a majority of the Multiverse destroyed, Singularity then creates a new world to absorb what remains of the rest, evolving into Singularity Chaos. But with help from Luka, Bayonetta escapes the Alphaverse to confront Singularity. Revealing herself to be the origin of Arch-Eves, she releases the souls of the other Bayonettas and Jeanne to aid her in battle. But Singularity disperses through the alternative Bayonettas until only the regular was left, save for Jeanne who aids Bayonetta in kicking Singularity back down to Earth.
Singularity then evolves into his ultimate form, Singularity Definition, and is able to once again overwhelm Beyonetta, coming close to killing her. She is saved by two of her counterparts, who happen to be her incarnations from the first two Bayonetta games. The three fuse into one, allowing her to best the being with help from Viola and Luka. Bayonetta proceeds to summon Gomorrah, with its beam attack shattering Singularity's body, destroying him for good.
Upon Singularity's death, his created universe collapses into a black hole while restoring the destroyed universes. However, Bayonetta's Umbran Watch shatters, causing her soul to be struck out of her body by Gomorrah and Luka allows himself to be pulled into Inferno with her.
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon[]
Through unknown reasons, Singularity is revealed to have survived his clash with Bayonetta, having sent a fragment of himself back in time to kill Cereza and steal the Left Eye of Darkness before she became Bayonetta. In the extra "Jeanne's Tale", Singularity traces Cereza through the Faeries' magic resonating in her memories and teleports her to the Clouds of Erasure, where a mysterious force petrifies her. Sensing her friend in danger, Jeanne departs through the Avalon Forest to find Cereza. There, she forms a temporary pact with Cereza's demon familiar Chesire, turning him into Charles. As they explore through the forest, Singularity's voice rings out, warning her not to interfere or else he will seal her fate. Jeanne ignores these remarks and presses on.
Eventually, Jeanne reaches the Clouds of Erasure where Cereza was being held. Singularity reveals himself, addressing himself as the Affirmer of Phenomena. He explains that he came here from the continued defiance of Arch-Eve Origin, determined to kill her as a child so she wouldn't be able to stop him as an adult. Jeanne battles him and manages to defeat him due to his weakened state. Singularity suddenly immobilizes Jeanne and Charles with a spell and assaults her with a vision of him killing her as an adult. He tells her that she can avoid her fate if she allows him to kill Cereza. Jeanne angrily refuses and proceeds to battle him once more.
Despite managing to best him once more, Singularity gains the upper hand and catches Charles, proceeding to slowly torture him with spectral flames that eat away at his body. Unable to fight him alone, Jeanne cries out to Cereza, reminding her of their promise to grow strong together. Her pleas go through and Cereza breaks free of Singularity's control, having awoken her status as the Arch-Eve Origin. The two witches bind Singularity with thorns, enabling Charles to break free and strike a finishing blow. As he dies, Singularity taunts Jeanne that her fate would be immutable. With his death, the Clouds of Erasure fade away.
