ANGSTROM! YOU CAN'T JUST STRAND US HERE!!! We will find a way out of here! We will find you-- AND WE WILL KILL YOU!
~ Sinister Mark to Angstrom Levy following his betrayal.
Oh, good. You arrived just in time for dinner.
~ Sinister Mark to the mainstream Mark, as he feasts on their counterparts.

Markus Sebastian "Mark" Grayson, also known as Invincible or "Sinister Mark", is a supporting antagonist in the Image comics series Invincible and a minor antagonist in the second season of its animated adaptation.

He was among the 16 Alternate Mark Graysons recruited by Angstrom Levy to ruin his home dimension's Invincible reputation after he disfigured him horrendously and killed all of his counterparts under the promise of him granting every Mark access to new dimensions to conquer.

Levy would prove to not respect the deal, as he betrayed the 8 surviving Marks as soon as he got the chance by stranding them in a wasteland version of Earth. During this time, this particularly Sinister version of Mark would resort to anything that would ensure his survival, including cannibalizing his other selves.

He is voiced by Steven Yeun, who also played all the other Alternate Mark Graysons, A. Traveler in The Twilight Zone, Ricky "Jupe" Park in Nope and Danny Cho in Beef.

Biography[]

Background[]

Little is known about Sinister Mark's past, but it's implied that most of his life had been similar to the mainstream Mark's, with the exception that something had made him closer to his father, leading him to a darker path that culminated in him joining the ranks of the Viltrum Empire.

According to him, his world's version of Firebreather is the king of all monsters and one of the most ferocious villains he had ever faced during his time as a superhero, which could lead to the hypothesis that everyone is a little more "evil" in Sinister Mark's dimension. It's also mentioned by the Masked Mark that, sometime after becoming a villain, Sinister Mark had murdered his own mother, Debbie, in their own home, which made him hate coming back to that place.

In the animated series, it's shown that during his reign of terror, he had terrorized his version of Angstrom Levy and his son, Angstrom Levy Jr., before killing the latter in front of his very own eyes.

Invincible War[]

Sinister Mark was approached by the mainstream Angstrom Levy to aid him ruin his home dimension's Invincible reputation and, in exchange, Levy would help his empire expand across universes. He accepted the offer and was among the wave of Marks that stormed the mainstream Image Comics universe. On the first day of the invasion, he would go to Nevada, where he faced off against this universe's version of Firebreather. He pointed out how weak and pathetic he was in comparison with his universe's Firebreather, before finishing him off rather quickly.

Later on, by the end of the second day, Sinister Mark is seen fighting Oliver Grayson, who he intuits is an interbreed Viltrumite, or as he puts it a "kind of lesser Viltrumite". It's unknown how Oliver survives the encounter.

On the third day, Sinister Mark had fully decimated an entire city, before being called to regroup by Angstrom on top of the Grayson Family's home. Sinister Mark points out how he hates going back in there, only for the Masked Mark to reply that not every one of them had killed their mother in there and that he actually liked to see it again. Angstrom Levy then makes act of presence, and asks the Evil Invincibles a last favor: to bring this dimension's Invincible to him so he could disfigure him himself.

Sinister Mark denies Angstrom's petition, arguing that his plan was stupid and that it only weeded their numbers down to just eight. Angstrom, disappointed at the Marks, decides to throw them all to the wasteland dimension to die.

Just in Time for Dinner[]

We could have worked together-- Found a way out of here! What you made us do--! What you made ME do--! You were the WORST OF US!
~ Mohawk Mark describing Sinister Mark as he beats him to death.

In Angstrom's second battle with Mark many years later, he sends him to that very same wasteland dimension. In there, it's revealed what had happened to the eight surviving Evil Invincibles: they eventually became hungrier and hungrier, and in their desperation and, moreso, anger, they started eating each other just to survive, starting from the weakests and most annoying of the bunch to the strongests. Mohawk Mark even implies that eating each other was Sinister Mark's idea. By the time the mainstream Invincible finds them, only two had survived: Mohawk Mark and Sinister Mark himself.

Invincible first finds Sinister Mark feasting on the remains of the Viltrumite Mark. At first, Sinister doesn't even think that he's seeing a real person and that he's instead hallucinating him, causing him to go on a speech about how they ended up in this situation. But soon, Sinister Mark came to his senses and realized that Invincible was very much real, and attempted to eat him. Invincible fought back, which only caused Sinister Mark to congratulate him and chase him across the wasteland. Sinister Mark pointed out how despite getting hungrier and hungrier, he never got weaker, in fact, he believes he only got stronger.

Midway through his speech, he was attacked by Mohawk Mark, who teams up with Invincible to take out the "worst of us." Sinister Mark catches up to the duo before they could organize further, only for Mohawk Mark to lunge at him and start beating him to death, resenting him for all he had made him and the other Marks do. Invincible tried to separate the two, but it was too late: Sinister Mark had already been killed.

Trivia[]

  • Sinister Mark is one of the most popular characters in the fandom following the release of Season 2 of the Invincible TV adaptation, despite having only 2 major appearances in the comics.
  • He is most likely based on Superboy-Prime, a mean-spirited version of Superman from alternate reality.
  • Despite popular belief, it's not confirmed that Sinister Mark and the Mark that broke into the Grayson's house are one and the same. His reaction upon being called to regroup over it seems to reinforce that these two are separate individuals.
    • Oliver was actively fighting in the Invincible War, so it's highly unlikely that he would have returned to his house and faced off against Sinister Mark in there.
  • Masked Mark mentions to Sinister Mark that "Not all of us killed our mother here. [...] I'm happy to see it." when the latter says that he hated returning to his home, which implies that Sinister Mark was the one to regrettably murder Debbie.
    • The notion that it wasn't Sinister Mark who did it is born out of the incorrect assumption that he was the one who broke into the Grayson home, as the Mark who broke into the house didn't kill Debbie himself.
