Char Aznable has declared Sinister Mark is to be renamed to
Capevincible
for the following reason(s): "Sinister Mark/Invincible", while technically official, is abhorred by Robert Kirkman, who instead uses this name.

Please discuss it on the talk page for this article.

Oh, ho-ho ... Poor Angstrom ... Ha-ha ... You actually thought you could hide from me? My God ... Look at you ... Pathetic! You're making me feel bad, man. I'll tell you what ... I'll kill the boy quickly.

Oh, good. You arrived just in time for dinner.
~ Sinister Mark to the mainstream Mark as he feasts on their counterparts, also his most famous quote.

Markus "Mark" Sebastian Grayson, also known as Invincible or "Sinister Mark", is a major antagonist in the Image Comics comic series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.

He was among the 20 villainous Alternate Mark Graysons recruited by Angstrom Levy to ruin his home dimension's Invincible's reputation after he disfigured him horrendously and killed all of his counterparts under the promise of granting every Mark access to new dimensions to conquer.

Levy would prove to not respect the deal, as he betrayed the 8 surviving Marks as soon as he got the chance by stranding them in a wasteland version of Earth. During this time, this particularly Sinister version of Mark would resort to anything that would ensure his survival, including cannibalizing his other selves, making him one of the far more malicious versions of Invincible.

He is voiced by Steven Yeun, who also played all the other Alternate Mark Graysons, A. Traveler in The Twilight Zone, Ricky "Jupe" Park in Nope and Danny Cho in Beef.

Appearance[]

Physique[]

Sinister Mark closely resembles his main timeline counterpart, sporting black hair with a distinctive widow’s peak combed back, accented by a few stray strands. He has a lean, well-defined physique. The primary difference is his noticeably paler complexion compared to the main Invincible.

Attire[]

Sinister Mark’s costume closely resembles that of his mainstream counterpart but features a striking black and yellow color scheme. His outfit includes a large yellow cape, full-fingered yellow gloves (in contrast to the original’s fingerless ones), and black visors integrated into his mask. Notably, his costume lacks knee pads, and the bottom of the “i” emblem on his chest is rounded rather than pointed. Additionally, his mask fully encircles his eyes, unlike the main Mark’s design.

Biography[]

Background[]

Little is known about Sinister Mark's past, but it's implied that most of his life had been similar to the mainstream Mark's, with the exception that something had made him closer to his father, leading him to a darker path that culminated in him joining the ranks of the Viltrum Empire.

According to him, his world's version of Firebreather is the king of all monsters and one of the most ferocious villains he had ever faced during his time as a superhero, which could lead to the hypothesis that everyone is a little more "evil" in Sinister Mark's dimension. It's also mentioned by the Masked Mark that, sometime after becoming a villain, Sinister Mark had murdered his own mother, Debbie, in their own home, which made him hate coming back to that place.

In the animated series, it's shown that during his reign of terror, he had terrorized his version of Angstrom Levy and his son, Angstrom Levy Jr., before killing the latter in front of his very own eyes. He also admitted to have murdered his dimension's version of his father.

Invincible War[]

Sinister Mark was approached by the mainstream Angstrom Levy to aid him in ruining his home dimension's Invincible’s reputation and, in exchange, Levy would help his empire expand across universes. He accepted the offer and was among the wave of Marks that stormed the mainstream Invincible universe. On the first day of the invasion, he would go to Nevada, where he faced off against this universe's version of Firebreather. He pointed out how weak and pathetic he was in comparison with his universe's Firebreather, before finishing him off rather quickly.

Later on, by the end of the second day, Sinister Mark is seen fighting Oliver Grayson, who he intuits is an interbreed Viltrumite, or as he puts it a "kind of lesser Viltrumite". It's unknown how Oliver survives the encounter.

On the third day, Sinister Mark had fully decimated an entire city, before being called to regroup by Angstrom on top of the Grayson Family's home. Sinister Mark points out how he hates going back in there, only for the Masked Mark to reply that not every one of them had killed their mother in there and that he actually liked to see it again. Angstrom Levy then makes act of presence, and asks the Evil Invincibles a last favor: to bring this dimension's Invincible to him so he could disfigure him himself.

Sinister Mark denies Angstrom's petition, arguing that his plan was stupid and that it only weeded their numbers down to just eight. Angstrom, disappointed at the Marks, decides to throw them all to the wasteland dimension to die.

Just in Time for Dinner[]

We could have worked together — Found a way out of here! What you made us do—! What you made ME do—! You were the WORST OF US!
~ Mohawk Mark describing Sinister Mark as he beats him to death.

During Angstrom's third battle with Mark over a year later, he sends him to that very same wasteland dimension. In there, it's revealed what had happened to the eight surviving Evil Invincibles: they eventually became hungrier and hungrier, and in their desperation and, moreso, anger, they started eating each other just to survive, starting from the weakest Invincibles and most annoying of the bunch to the strongest Invincibles. Mohawk Mark even implies that eating each other was Sinister Mark's idea. By the time the mainstream Invincible finds them, only two had survived: Mohawk Mark, who had managed to survive by going into hiding after the first of the other alternate Marks was killed, and Sinister Mark himself.

Invincible first finds Sinister Mark feasting on the remains of the Viltrumite Mark. At first, Sinister doesn't even think that he's seeing a real person and that he's instead hallucinating him, causing him to launch into a monologue about how they ended up in this situation. But soon, Sinister Mark came to his senses and realized that Invincible was very much real, and attempted to eat him. Invincible fought back, which only caused Sinister Mark to congratulate him and chase him across the wasteland. Sinister Mark pointed out how despite getting hungrier and hungrier, he never got weaker, in fact, he believes he only got stronger.

Midway through his speech, he was attacked by Mohawk Mark, who teams up with Invincible to take out the "worst of us." Sinister Mark catches up to the duo before they could organize further, only for Mohawk Mark to lunge at him and start beating him to death, resenting him for all he had made him and the other Marks do. Invincible tried to separate the two, but it was too late: Sinister Mark had already been killed.

Trivia[]

  • In a post made by Ryan Ottley, the then-artist for the Invincible comics, a scrapped mock-up of the Alternate Invincibles roster was revealed. Most notably, Sinister Mark's original concept was that of a zombified Mark as an obvious homage to Robert Kirkman's previous work in the Marvel Zombies franchise. This is also what likely inspired the decision to make him a cannibal in later issues.
    • According to another post by Ryan, this zombified Invincible was meant to be a call-back to the time Angstrom sent Mark to an universe overrun by a zombie virus. Robert Kirkman shot down the idea soon after he was presented to it, mainly because of the potential chaos an outbreak would do to the plot.
  • Sinister Mark is one of the most popular characters in the fandom following the release of Season 2 of the Invincible TV adaptation, despite having only two major appearances in the comics.
  • He is most likely based on Ultraman, a villainous version of Superman from an alternate reality.
  • Full Mask Mark mentions to Sinister Mark that "Not all of us killed our mother here. [...] I'm happy to see it." when the latter says that he hated returning to his home, which implies that Sinister Mark murdered his version of Debbie.
    • In the animated series, Omni-Mark's line about killing his father was instead given to Sinister Mark, meaning that in the TV continuity he murdered both of his parents.
    • This is the third evil Invincible to appear in the series.
    • Despite his name, Omni-Mark also wears a cape and are the only two members of Team Evil Invincible to have capes.
    • Sinister Mark's speech pattern was slightly altered to a more, sadistic, vocal pattern in What I Have Done.
    • In the series, Sinister Mark was the one who stated Omni-Man's murder, but in the comics, it was stated by Omni-Mark.
    • "Sinister Mark" is the most popular and famous name for this character among the fans, which was most likely due to him becoming a cannibal in the comics.
    • Fans have pointed out that Capevincible shares some similarities with Homelander from The Boys, with both being villainous superbeings that wears capes and have a psychopathic personality, having shown enjoyment in toying and killing their enemies.
    • In the comics, he also fought another Image Comics warrior called "Firebreather," who, like Invincible, is a human hybrid, but of a dragon species. He also fought Kid Omni-Man and defeats him, though he doesn't kill him. In the show, he faces Best Tiger in Hong Kong before fighting El Chupacabra.
    • Since in the frame of Sinister Mark eating his counter parts and Full Mask Mark is not visible in this frame, it is joked that Full Mask Mark somehow possibly convinced Sinister Mark to not eat him. The joke is called "I'm not even real bro" by the Invincible community.
