~ Alfie to the group. |
Sir Alfred of Landreth or just Alfie is the overarching antagonist of the Netflix original series Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight. He was a knight who swore to serve the Queen of England as Master of War. However, he was killed by Klaus and Veruca Dumont but later was revived. Due to the 15 years he spent inside the weapons' evil influence he was driven to insanity and extremism by them and vowed to unite the world and enforce his peaceful methods by all means possible.
He was voiced by Omid Abtahi, who also played Doctor Pershing in The Mandalorian.
Biography[]
Past[]
Alfred was born to Lucinda of Landreth. At a young age, Alfie dreamed to become a knight and maybe even Master of War. He ended up becoming a knight and soon after Master of War, with the lion Sir Drake becoming his squire. He was sent on a mission to hunt moss vines that were terrorizing the town of Festermouth, he tracked their source down but instead of finding a genuine monster as he'd been told he instead met a moss-covered beaver mage named Duncan, after Alfie spared his life and realized he wasn't evil but rather had just been the victim of miscommunication and the knights intruding on his homeland, he decided to leave him alone which caused Duncan to decide to give Alfie the quest to obtain the Tianshang Weapons and destroy them for being the first person to be nice to him and seeing his determination to protect the innocent. After Duncan told him everything he knew about the weapons, Alfie decided to go hunting for them.
He told the Queen of England he would be taking a vacation in order to get an excuse to leave, and with her permission then went to Tikal for the Storm Wheels. He found a quetzal named Akna and soon befriended her. Akna told him of Zuma, the queen of Tikal who might help them find the Storm Wheels (which were two of the Tianshang Weapons) and that her land had a drought as a result of someone altering the weather, prompting them to seek out Zuma's help, however they found out she was the Protector responsible for stealing the rain and had the Wheels, prompting the duo to fight her to try and steal the Wheels. While the battle wasn't concluded and Zuma got away, Alfie soon ended up getting one of the Storm Wheels from Zuma and after failing to destroy it even with Akna's help left Tikal to return to England to find some way to destroy them from Duncan, who told him of the ancient forge where the weapons were created and that only there will he be capable of destroying all five weapons, along the way he fought Klaus and Veruca after discovering their plans to betray the Queen of England and unwittingly revealed to them the existence of the set of Tianshang Weapons when he used his Storm Wheel to get away from Veruca's vines. However, instead of doing as he was instructed, he forged the Storm Wheel he stole into his sword intending to have it be his ace in the hole against Zuma and any other Tianshang Weapon wielders he might encounter.
When Klaus and Veruca Dumont escaped prison, Alfie was sent to get them. However, while he had managed to corner them and was able to keep them at bay, Luthera, who had followed him, was put in the line of danger forcing Alfie to protect her which distracted him long enough that Veruca was able to grab his sword and kill him with it, with Luthera helpless to do anything about it. Since his sword was forged from one of the Storm Wheels, his soul was trapped inside with a bunch of soldiers and enemies of the Ancient Masters that killed. For years, being imprisoned drove him mad and ate away at the morals he had before, turning him rageful and vengeful alike with a desire to kill the remaining Dumonts and ensure the world is at peace no matter the cost. His death caused great strife across England and the Queen and Order of Knights ordered the arrest of his murderers and for all their accomplices, the Dark Mages, to be killed, the Mages only surviving by running away from England to a distant island.
Season 3[]
The Battle of Tianshang, Part 2[]
He was summoned alongside all the trapped Spirit Warriors by Veruca Dumont when she gathered all the Tianshang Weapons (Luthera's Shield included) and she had him attack his sister, Luthera, intending to kill her so she can pay for allegedly killing Klaus. However when Po made Veruca realize that Klaus was still alive but had abandoned the quest for the weapons and her as well after she betrayed him, she dropped one of the Storm Wheels in anger, severing her control over the army which in turn allowed Alfie to break free of her control and kill her in retaliation for all her crimes while she was distracted with his sword getting her soul trapped inside. Happy to be reunited with not just his family but also his old friend, Akna and growing to respect Po for caring for his sister in his absence, Alfie was handed the weapons by the Dragon Knights, who believed he was the one who should destroy them since that was his quest to begin with. But then Alfie showed his true ambitions by wielding all the weapons at once, and then connected all the continents for Pangea to reform, intending to create a better and more peaceful world where the old guard of knights and other protectors wouldn't be needed to keep the peace.
Pangea[]
He offered his sister and mother a chance to accompany him in his new reign and they accepted only to keep an eye on him and find out how to stop him. After saving a bunch of people who were affected by the aftermath of him joining the continents together, he would showcase his extremist desire for peace by killing Chuntao for attempting to extort Weimin out of his home at the deserted pirate island then telling the surviving members of his gang to warn the world of his law.
The Master Key[]
Alfie would soon learn that his sister joined the Dragon Knight's efforts in undoing his reign and destroying the weapons, causing him to try and capture her so she'll be turned away from her "dark path" and in turn seeking to kill the Dragon Knights for defying him and collaborating with Klaus Dumont, who he also wanted dead.
The Last Dumont[]
He sent his shadow army to track down Weimin and find out the location of Mage Island, after the komodo dragon talked he sent his forces to Mage Island to find and capture Klaus and bring the mage to him, but their efforts were thwarted by the Dragon Knights who defeated his scouts temporarily and were able to retreat to safety. A frustrated Alfred then found out his mother was trying to find a way to help the Dragon Knights and had his servants place her under house arrest for betraying him.
The Dragon Knights[]
When Mr. Ping and Forouzan staged a fake war between China and England, Alfie sent his army to put a stop to the fighting, leaving himself alone on his floating fortress where the Dragon Knights sans Po and Colin tried to steal the weapons from him but he easily thwarted this plot until his mother took his sword while he was distracted severing his control of the Dark Army which allowed Po to get Master Mastodon's help in trying to reach the fortress and with Klaus' help summon the Ancient Masters so they could destroy the weapons, but Alfie intercepted them and after a fight against his sister reclaimed his sword and prepared to cast his final judgment on the Dragon Knights and force his mother and sister to surrender. He then fought Po and Luthera while trying to hunt down Klaus, and though they tried their best and even briefly stole the sword from him once more, they ultimately failed to defeat him and were defeated themselves with Alfie retrieving all the weapons once more and leaving Luthera at his mercy, however, before Alfie could either kill or grievously harm her, Lucinda interfered and told Alfie that she would not let him harm his sister, enraged by feeling abandoned by everyone once more, Alfie lashed out and by reflex used the Helmet of Winds to hurl his mother aside but hurt her in the process, horrified by his actions and then realizing he was destroying the world by mistake after the Ancient Masters show him the chaos of the Tianshang Weapons in addition to Luthera telling Alfie that he didn't have to be like he was now, Alfie realized he was wrong, surrendered them and apologized for what he'd done, joining the Dragon Knights and Ancient Masters in undoing the work he'd done and destroy the weapons forever, even though it would result in him fully moving to the afterlife. After all the Tianshang Weapons were destroyed his soul was released forever but not before he spent his last moments with his family, declaring Luthera to be a better knight than he ever was.
Other Versions[]
In Epic New Lunar Year, Po's New Lunar Year tale of the Great Hunter which had fictionalized versions of the people he knew, Alfred and his sister lived in the unnamed Chinese city, which was besieged constantly by the dragon Nian forcing the siblings to hide with other villagers in the mountains to survive, one night when Luthera was caught during one of Nian's rampages, Alfie distracted the monster and fought it so his sister could escape to safety while promising to return to her side, after which Nian chased Alfie and flew out of the city, eventually killing him and leaving Luthera desiring to avenge her brother's death. Alfie's death was finally avenged when Luthera and a few other villagers drove Nian away for good with fireworks.
Personality[]
Alfie was a caring brother towards Luthera, always supporting her dreams of being a knight despite their mother being against it. Alfie was also an ideal and selfless knight, always looking out for the weak and helpless and even though he had a dedication to his code, he was able to go against it for the greater good, such as sparing Duncan the "Bog Monster" and being nice enough to earn the latter's trust. In Tikal he helped Akna with her people's plight and weakened Zuma by taking one of the Storm Wheels. However, he also began to become disillusioned with the knightly code he followed as he saw corruption and cruelty everywhere by the authority figures that were supposed to protect and the bureaucracy of knighthood limiting how much he could actually help others, he became slowly obsessed with the idea of him and his family ruling over a more peaceful world by force and saw the Tianshang Weapons as the means to achieve that goal.
After being trapped in the Tianshang Weapons, Alfie's sanity was slowly eroded as was the majority of the moral code he had before, becoming vindicative, spiteful and revenge-driven towards Klaus and Veruca for causing his death, looking to kill them both at all costs. Despite his prior fondness for Akna and respect for Po, his growing madness caused him to toss it aside and try to kill them when they defied him too much. However, he still loved his family and for most of the fight tried to convince Luthera to stand down and join him, and despite being willing to keep her imprisoned and held hostage by his forces was genuinely distraught when he seriously hurt his mother in his blind rage, which was the key for him to stand down and listen to Luthera and then give up his goal. After calming down he returned to his old personality and spent his last moments peacefully awaiting the destruction of the weapons and with it his incoming passing.
Ironically enough his end goal was very similar to Klaus and Veruca Dumont who both wanted to unleash the undead army, albeit in his case he wanted to create a genuinely better world rather than conquer everything out of resentment and ego-driven mania. Despite the unintentional destruction he could've brought with the weapons, Alfie is by far the least evil of all the major antagonists in the franchise, with him having genuine good end goals as opposed to wanting to destroy the world on purpose or rule it out of cruel ambition.

Trivia[]
- Although his intentions were noble, his goal to reunite the Pangea would've annihilate the Earth if not for Po and his friend's intervention. This easily makes Alfie, the most destructive villain of the Kung Fu Panda franchise (alongside Ke-Pa and Yaoguai Twins).
- Alfie represents what his sister, Luthera, would've become if she let her revenge consume her.
