Sir Drake is the main antagonist of the first half of season 3 of Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, he's a zealous, overreactive and grudgeful lion who became England's Master of War after the death of Sir Alfred and who wishes to capture Luthera for stealing her brother's sword.
He was voiced by Mick Wingert.
Biography[]
Past[]
At some point Drake joined the Order of the Knights, becoming Alfie's squire and apprentice thanks to his outstanding skills at sword-fighting. Though he admired Alfie, he resented his family for their superiority to him, though never acted on this hatred of his.
After Alfie was murdered by Veruca and Klaus, the Queen of England ordered Veruca to be arrested and the Order of Knights took their chance to hunt down and try to wipe out the other Mages for their treachery and compliance in Alfred's death. Sir Drake personally apprehended the treacherous weasel mage and imprisoned her for 15 years while blocking out her cell's view of the moon so she wouldn't use her powers to escape. He then personally led the manhunt against the other mages and managed to successfully lead to the killing of the majority, with stragglers being forced to leave England to survive.
In-between the 15 years that passed between Alfred's death and the events of Dragon Knight, Drake became a full-fledged knight and Master of War, succeeding Alfie. Disapproving of Alfie's sister, Luthera's attempts to become a knight, Drake was furious when she stole Alfie's sword and escaped to China to hunt down Klaus and Veruca after the former freed his sister; and sent one of his apprentices, Colin, after her. Colin would almost succeed at his mission but after a while was unable to keep up, and his delay made Drake lose any small faith he had on Colin.
Season 3[]
Eventually Colin found himself forced to work for the Pirate Queen, Forouzan, but secretly planned to betray her. After the Dragon Knights were able to thwart Forouzan's attempts to execute Mr. Ping and defeated her crew (including Forouzan herself), Colin took his chance to signal fireworks display that drove the Knights of England to the Pirate Island, including Sir Drake. Managing to arrest most of the pirates and the Dragon Knights, Drake refused to listen to the latter's warnings of the dangers of the Tianshang Weapons, believing that said powerful artifacts belonged with England as means of strengthening their country's power. Despite Colin's efforts to bring Luthera to justice, Drake wasn't impressed and berated him for taking too long to achieve his mission. After Forouzan and Mr. Ping managed to keep Drake from taking the Tianshang Weapons and fled with them with instructions from Po, Drake was frustrated but resolved to finish arresting Luthera.
While en route to London for Luthera's trial and to imprison the Dragon Knights, the former tried to reason with Drake about her mission, revealing that Alfie wanted to destroy the Tianshang Weapons and that Drake's help was needed to find out what Alfie was doing in the last days before his death. Despite everything, Drake was willing to hear out Luthera's argument and cooperate until Po freed himself and tried to "save" Luthera, which made Drake believe that Luthera was leading him on a trap and retaliate. Luthera, Po and the Dragon Knights escaped in the end, which made Drake swear to not just capture but also kill them for making a fool out of him.
After the Dragon Knights found the Ancient Forge beneath London, Sir Drake pursued them there to try and kill them for defying him too much, even ignoring the Queen's orders for him to stand down to achieve his personal revenge. Once he had caught up to them and threatened them with a crossbow, Colin attempted to reason with Drake, telling him of the urgency to destroy the Tianshang Weapons only to be ignored again and for Drake to instead offer Colin to re-join his side in exchange for becoming a full-fleged knight and have his status restored but Colin refused and instead took a crossbow warning shot meant for Po, which was luckily non-fatal. Before Drake could try and kill the Dragon Knights, Veruca snuck up on him and used her plant magic to have the vines around the forge wrap him, disarm him and then toss him into the abyss while he screamed.
While his final fate was left unclear, it's very likely Drake either perished due to being stranded in the forge's anti-gravity abyss or was killed when the resurrected Alfie collapsed the forge himself; since at the epilogue his title of Master of War was given to Luthera by the Queen who herself then handed over to Colin.
Personality[]
Sir Drake can be described as the epitome of the worst aspects of lawfulness and knighthood, being so dedicated to his code that anything that goes against it, be it bad or good, is equally punishable. He refuses to listen to the Dragon Knights for being fugitives and attempts to kill them multiple times, even when the Queen orders him to stop and stand down. Despite seeing reasons to destroy the Tianshang Weapons after being warned by Colin and the others, he still refused to do so under the belief the Weapons would serve England's interests. He also disrespects any knight beneath him since he feels the right to do so, even if they're 100% loyal to him like Colin.
He also had some mild respect for Sir Alfred but despite this, secretly resented him and his whole family because he perceived them as believing themselves to be better than him. However, he at least was willing to compromise with Luthera when she informed him that destroying the Tianshang Weapons was Alfie's mission before his death and only went back on a possible alliance when Po inadvertedly ruined Luthera's attempts at negotiation. He also was shocked when it seemed Luthera chose to commit suicide over being turned in when he had her cornered at a cliff, only to grow more frustrated when she escaped again.
Trivia[]
- He was originally supposed to have been confirmed as having been fully killed by Veruca in "The Battle of Tianshang", where he would've been crushed to death by her vines as shown in the storyboard; in the final version he is just stunned and then tossed into the abyss while screaming, leaving his final fate unclear.
