| ~ Sir Guy threatening Robin Hood |
Sir Guy of Gisbourne is the secondary antagonist in the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
He was portrayed by the late Basil Rathbone, who also portrayed King Richard III in the 1939 film adaptation of The Tower of London, Edward Murdstone in David Copperfield, and Pontius Pilate in The Last Days of Pompeii.
Biography[]
Sir Guy is the lord of Nottingham Castle, a charismatic but ruthless Norman nobleman who is loyal to Prince John and acts as his right-hand man. He pines for the Lady Marian and detests the heroic Saxon Robin Hood. Along with the High Sheriff of Nottingham and on Prince John's orders, Guy taxes and oppresses the Saxons of Nottingham to fill the prince's coffers.
Following an humiliation where Robin ambushed his convoy and forced him and the Sheriff to wear peasants' clothes, Guy swears to capture and kill the outlaw. The Sheriff suggests hosting an archer tournament to bait and capture. While the plot is successful, Robin escapes thanks to Marian's help. Afterward, Guy and John schemes to get the latter on the throne.
At the end of the film, when the merry men invade the castle, he and Robin have a lengthy sword fight, with Guy getting overwhelmed twice, the two exchanging small banter and him trying to stab Robin with a dagger. Eventually Robin wins, stabbing Guy through the stomach. He falls off a ledge to his death.
