Hilary: What the hell is that?!
Geoff: That Hilary... Is a Homunculus.
~ Hilary Briss and Geoff Tipps discussing the merged abomination of the three Catholics merged.

Sir Nicholas, Lemuel Blizzard & Father Silas Halfhearte later merged into a Homunculus are the secondary antagonists of the 2005 black comedy/horror film The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse as well as the three protagonists in the fictional new project by The League of Gentlemen themselves The King's Evil. They are a trio of devout Catholics plotting to kill an aging protestant king within the universe of their own story ultimately seeking the help of Dr. Erasmus Pea to succeed in this endeavour, unlike the latter however they remain completely unaware that they're fictional characters.

Nicholas was portrayed by Mark Gattiss who also played Hilary Briss and Val Denton in the same series as well as Richard Lazarus in Doctor Who. Lemuel was portrayed by Steve Pemberton who also played Tubbs Tattsyrup, Pauline Campbell-Jones and Pop in the same series as well as Eddie, Graham, Mr. Clarke and Professor Squires in Inside No. 9. Father Halfhearte was portrayed by Reece Shearsmith who also played Edward Tattsyrup, Bernice Woodall, Geoff Tipps, Papa Lazarou and Cathy Carter-Smith in the same series as well as Ray, Tom, Hector, Dr. Maxwell, Mr. Warren, Dr. Jacob Tyler and Viktor in Inside No. 9 as well as Malcolm Webster in The Widower and Gagan Rassmussen in Doctor Who.

All three also voiced the Vogons in the 2005 film adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Biography[]

The three men are introduced as main characters in a new project being created by all of the LOG members aside from Jeremy Dyson who is determined to do more stories about Royston Vasey called The King's Evil. They are introduced as three wealthy men of high influence who are devoted Catholics and are extremely agitated that their current king is a protestant and as such plot to assassinate him undetected. To do such they enlist the help of Dr. Erasmus Pea who comes up with the idea of creating a homunculus.

To create the creature he tells the three men he will need parts of each of their bodies; Nicholas' toenail clippings, Lemuel's drool and both of Halfhearte's eyes. Nicholas and Lemuel are more than willing to comply by Halfhearte naturally protests however his complaints go on deaf ears and Pea pops out both of his eyes and alongside the drool and toenails he boils them together to make a small, demonic creature, much to Pea's fury however the creature immediately crashes into the ceiling light with the other two men reminding him that Halfhearte needed glasses, all the while the latter called out in a combination of fury and confusion at what was happening.

The three set their plan in motion to kill the king with having him touch the beast's poison skin however their plan was thwarted by Geoff Tipps who wrote himself into their story in an effort to prolong his own existence and prove himself as a hero, the trio promptly returned to Pea's chamber and informed him of this leading to the latter confronting Tipps and kidnapping him, torturing him to gain information where he ultimately learned of his fictional status, the three Catholics however remained oblivious to this and still only cared for the goal of killing the king.

The three followed Pea with a still held hostage Tipps into the realm of Royston Vasey however after complaining to Pea about being brought to a ruined and burning world and that they only wanted to go back and kill the king he swiftly kills them and turns their corpse into a large three headed homunculus which engages in a battle with Hilary Briss. Although he succeeds in killing the beast however Pea manages to fatally wound Briss before being murdered himself by Geoff, ending the reign of terror against all of their creators until Geoff manages to accidentally kill Mark Gattiss after trying to convince Herr Lipp to not.

Personalities[]

Sir Nicholas[]

Sir Nicholas was the leader of the trio and the most charismatic which is evident since he had made many friends and acquaintances of all kinds. He also appears to be quite arrogant and lavish and had the highest influence out of the three due to being knighted before.

Lemuel[]

Lemuel was the slowest of the trio, being very dim and simple minded twit who was obsessed with his own career of wig making to the point of wanting to incorporate wigs into literally every task he could think of, he does have something of a conscious and bravery within him however as he was the first of the trio willing to stand up to Dr. Pea.

Father Halfhearte[]

Father Halfhearte was the most intelligent and least eccentric of the duo but was also the most uptight and grouchy due to his horrible luck. This only continues after his eyes are taken to make the homunculus which rendered him handicapped, virtually useless and obsessed with getting another pair of eyes somehow, he also held a grudge against his two companions after this for refusing to back out of Pea's game before he was mutilated.

Appearances[]

Sir Nicholas[]

Sir Nicholas was a tall, slim, foppish man who wore very colourful regal attire and a large poofy blonde wig with a feathered hat over the top of it, he also wore a pair of large off-white gloves and a cloak which matched his other clothes. His skin was immensely pale and his face had a rather cat like look to it as well as some kind of bizarre skin condition which made his face resemble an aged painting that was falling apart, he also had several birthmarks resembling moons and stars dotted across his face. He also appeared to wear makeup, most notably blush and had long discoloured toenails.

Lemuel[]

Lemuel was an average heighted man of a slightly larger build with almost sunburned looking skin with several nodules and spots, malformed and unclean teeth and blue eyes. He is seen wearing darker regal wear than Nicholas mostly in browns and sports a long, curly and bouffant brown wig on his head. He was also the only one of the trio who was completely clean shaven. He also wore a witchfinder's hat.

Father Halfhearte[]

Father Halfhearte was a short, skinny man with immensely pale skin and thick long black hair with matching eyebrows and an elegant moustache, he originally had blue eyes which he wore a pair of spectacles over the top of however after having his eyes torn out by Pea he had instead two hideous holes were his eyes once were and had to cover them with UV blocking sunglasses.

His attire consisted of black regal wear in varying materials, most notably leather and wool with a matching trilby hat.

Homunculus[]

The Homunculus of the trio made by Dr. Pea was a large hydra like demon with green scaly skin and three heads which naturally resembled the trio. The beast also had a long tail and claws on both its hands and feet. The creature's skin also exuded poison much stronger than that of the original homunculus as pointed out by Mr. Chinnery.

Trivia[]

  • In the original draft of the film The King's Evil sections were initially intended to be a much darker period piece, perhaps suggesting that the trio of Catholics would have originally been far more malicious and competent than they appeared in the final film.
