~ Sir Raleigh, before facing Sly Cooper. |
Sir Raleigh is a major antagonist in the Sly Cooper video game series, appearing in the first title, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus as the main antagonist of "Episode 1: Tide of Terror". He is an notorious pirate who served as the chief machinist of the Fiendish Five.
He was voiced by the late Kevin Blackton in English, who also voiced Muggshot and the Panda King and by the late Sukekiyo Kameyama in the Japanese dub.
Description[]
Physical Appearance[]
Sir Raleigh is a anthropomorphic bullfrog with green skin, red eyes and yellow teeth. He wears white gloves, white spats and a navy blue top hat made of metal.
Personality[]
Sir Raleigh is a stereotypical "rich guy gone bad" villain. He acts elegantly and polite sometimes, but is in fact a very cruel, sadistic, and manipulative individual who takes delight in sinking ships and looting them for treasure. Raleigh is also one of few villains whose turn to crime did not stem from a tragic event in his past, but merely because he was bored and inattentive with his privileged life. He seems to be appreciative towards those who work for him, but will often criticize them for not doing more and also threaten to punish them severely if they fail him.
Powers and Abilities[]
Sir Raleigh is a gifted inventor who has created many dastardly devices, with his most notable creation being a huge machine capable of creating an endless storm. He was also extremely rich, being able to hire a private army of goons to protect his base of operations.
He had an allergic reaction to bees that caused him to bloat to a much greater size, but he was able to utilize this allergy to his advantage by using his added bulk to crush his foes.
History[]
Past[]
Born into a life of wealth and privilege among the aristocracy, Raleigh became bored of living in constant luxury. To cure his boredom, he decided to become a pirate, and found he had a passion for the occupation. He soon became addicted to crime, sinking down several enemy vessels while amassing even greater wealth than before. He also had a gift for machinery, which he used to further his criminal career.
Raleigh's actions got him noticed by Clockwerk, who recruited him into the Fiendish Five as their chief machinist. Then together with his cohorts, Raleigh invaded the Cooper home to slay Connor Cooper along with his wife and steal the Thievius Raccoonus, which contained all the Cooper family's thieving secrets. He along with the other villains tore out the pages, with Raleigh personally taking notes written by Riochi Cooper's "Ninja Spire Jump" technique. It seemed that he, like Clockwerk, was aware that Connor had a young son named Sly, who was hiding in a closet at the time, but chose to spare him thinking he was harmless.
After the raid, the Fiendish Five split up to commit more crimes across the world, with Raleigh establishing himself near the Isle O'Wrath, situated in the center of his artificially created Welsh Triangle. Building a powerful storm machine in the form of a blimp, he created a non-stop rainstorm that constantly caused shipwrecks, allowing him and his henchmen to raid the wrecks for any treasure. He also used the debris from the ships to build a large vessel to act as his fortress to protect his weather device, which he himself resided in. By the time of Sly's arrival, Raleigh managed to sink at least fifty ships.
Tide of Terror[]
Thirteen years after stealing the Thievius Raccoonus, Raleigh learns of an intruder wandering about his ship and stealing his treasure keys, which allow access throughout the hideout, and warns his guards to keep the rest that haven't been taken safe. But nonetheless, the intruder, which is none other than Sly Cooper himself, manages to take them as well and use a nearby cannon to shoot himself into Raleigh's blimp.
Boarding the machine, Sly confronts Raleigh, who states his seeming delight at having a "guest" in his hideout before angrily revealing his absolute hatred for unexpected guests. Sly retorts that it was Raleigh's fault that he was here, revealing that he is the son of the couple Raleigh helped murder and the true heir of the Thievius Raccoonus. Upon learning this, Raleigh sarcastically apologizes for not being thorough enough in the raid and mocked the raccoon by saying the Fiendish Five should have taken out Sly that night as well. Raleigh then decided to do just that by swallowing bees to activate his allergy and bloat to large size in order to crush Sly underneath him. Raleigh fought Sly on retracting platforms within the command centre of his blimp. Despite his powerful attacks, Sly was able to outpace the amphibian and strike him once he returned to regular size. After enough blows, Raleigh was defeated and left floating in the water. Still conscious, Raleigh warned Sly of the dangers that awaited in Mesa City, Utah where his companion, Muggshot resided, claiming that no-one will be able to get in without tripping alarms.
After besting Raleigh and recovering the Thievius Raccoonus pages he had, Sly then made a quick getaway as Inspector Carmelita Fox came looking for him. The beaten Raleigh and his crew were all captured by the Inspector, with him being held up by the legs by an officer while Carmelita took her picture with him, thus ending his reign over the Isle O'Wrath and the legend of the Welsh Triangle.
The Adventures of Sly Cooper[]
Raleigh was seen in Heathrow Prison when Sly broke in while disguised as a prison guard.

Quotes[]
“ | I say chaps; my heartiest congratulations to you all! The storm machine has sunk its fiftieth ship last night, and the loot has already been unloaded. Our operation is moving along splendidly, with the possible exception being... the ground's negligence displayed below decks! And I demand the boilers stay at full pressure at all times! If you lazy, low-brow, technically incompetent pack of guttersnipes did your jobs right, we'd have sunk a hundred ships by now! But of course, fifty boats is a fine, fine achievement. Carry on, my boys, carry on. | „ |
~ Sir Raleigh addressing his crew. |
“ | Ahoy, dock hands! Capital job unloading that cargo last night. You're the crown jewel of my operation! Do me the service of proving your worth yet again by protecting the treasure key that I have stored down there. It appears there's a prowler on the premises. And if any of you let him get his hands on that key, I'll personally flog the lot of you for an entire fortnight! | „ |
~ Raleigh threatening his subordinates. |
“ | Blast it all! You've beaten me! Well, gloat all you want, Sly Cooper. You're no match for Muggshot, my villainous cohort in Utah. You will see, Mesa City is so well-guarded, a snake couldn't slither in without setting off alarms! Vahahaha. | „ |
~ Sir Raleigh, after his defeat. |
