Sister Jatt

Sister Jatt is a supporting antagonist in the Doctor Who episode "New Earth".

She was portrayed by Adjoa Andoh.

Biography[]

Jatt was a cat person residing on the planet known as "New Earth" and a member of the Sisters of Plenitude, a religious order who worshipped the goddess Santori and dedicated themselves to healing the sick. The Sisterhood operated a hospital in New New York in the five billionth century and were renowned for their medical expertise, having the mysterious ability to cure any disease known to man, even those that should have been completely incurable.

In the year 5,000,000,023, the time traveller known as the Doctor visited the sister's hospital after being summoned there by one of the patients. Jatt showed the Doctor around Ward 26 while looking for the patient in question, the Face of Boe. During the tour, the Doctor became suspicious of the sisters after Jatt showed him their ability to cure Petrifold Regression; as a time traveller, the Doctor knew that the cure for Petrifold Regression would not be discovered for another thousand years. He also noted that they had the cure for other diseases such as Marconi's Disease and Pallidome Pancrosis, which should not have been possible.

Jatt later approached the sister's leader, Matron Casp, and told her she was needed in the intensive care unit: one of the patients had regained consciousness. The Doctor and Cassandra O'Brien, who had possessed the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler, secretly followed Casp and Jatt down to the bottom level, where they discovered their secret: they had genetically engineered a race of human clones who were infected with every disease known to man and kept alive in cryogenic pods so that the sisters could experiment with potential cures on them. The subjects did not die from their diseases, as they were engineered to be able to survive them, but anyone they touched would immediately be overcome by disease and died. Any subjects which showed signs of sentience, such as speaking, would be incinerated, as the Doctor and Cassandra witnessed Jatt doing to the subject who had gained consciousness.

Later, after Cassandra sounded the alarm, Casp and Jatt confronted her in intensive care, where Cassandra tried to extort a ransom from them by threatening to reveal their crimes to the public. Casp and Jatt refused to pay, so Cassandra opened several of the pods to release some of the test subjects. After berating Casp and Jatt, revealing they were all fully sentient and aware of their treatment, the freed subjects disabled the rest of the pods, releasing hundreds of subjects who began to overrun the hospital. Jatt tried to escape but was cornered by the subjects, one of whom touched her face. Jatt was immediately overrun by the patient's diseases and died seconds later.
