Villain Overview

A powerful and ruthless ape, desperate to conquer the surface world, led his tribe into war against the one they called the monster who ate a star: Godzilla. The war with the apes nearly destroyed Godzilla, but after a great battle, he imprisoned the apes in a fiery realm on Hollow Earth. Their false king remains obsessed with reaching the surface. The Iwi called him the Skar King.
~ Ilene Andrews explaining the Skar King's past.

The Skar King is the main antagonist of the 2024 sci-fi action kaiju film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the fifth main installment in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse franchise.

He is a vicious, ruthless, sadistic, barbaric and tyrannical primate-like Titan who rules over a clan of enslaved Great Ape Titans with an iron fist. As such, he is personally responsible for the Great Titan War, as well as the deaths of countless other Titans in the process. He is one of Godzilla and Kong's archenemies and the main reason for Godzilla's initial hatred towards the former.

No longer satisfied with simply having dominion over the Hollow Earth, the Skar King strikes out against the world by using his former lapdog and former minion, Shimo, a peaceful ice Titan whom he had abused and enslaved, using a crystal to unleash destruction upon the surface world. Ultimately, the Skar King's reign of terror entirely ended when his plan to create a second ice age upon Earth and wipe out both the Titans and humanity was foiled by Godzilla and Kong, leading to his well-deserved death at the hands of the two Titans with assistance from a redeemed Shimo, allowing Kong to become the new leader of the Great Apes.

He was portrayed by Allan Henry in motion-capture, who also played Kong in the same film, the Cocaine Bear in the 2023 film of the same name and Malgosha in A Minecraft Movie.

Appearance[]

The Skar King is a primate-like Titan similar to Kong, but unlike Kong's bulky gorilla-like appearance, he has a chimpanzee-like head/face and slender, elongated orangutan-like physique. He displays long arms and legs, a slightly pronounced hunchback and a small scar on his right brow. His skin is light gray, and is predominantly covered in thick, crimson red fur, except for his face, scalp, chest, inner arms, forearms, hands, and feet. He also stands 318 feet tall, making him almost as large as Kong himself.

His eyes have blue sclera and pink pupils which glow under dark lighting, and he adorns his face and parts of his body in additional red war paint. Additionally, the Skar King wears the Whipslash, a whip-like weapon made from the bones of a Warbat, across his torso from the right shoulder downward like a sash.

Personality[]

Bow to your new king.
~ The early tagline for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, referring to the Skar King.
Skar King mocking Kong.

Skar King mocking Kong.

The Skar King is shown to be a dangerously vile, brutal, vicious, cruel, sadistic, ruthless, tyrannical, black-hearted and highly malevolent tyrant who is the embodiment of pure evil. Despite not speaking (like all the Titans), his expressions and actions, and by extent his overall defined personality, can be seen as his own philanthropy of ruling his tribe using pain, suffering, oppression and fear. His malice even rivals that of even Ghidorah's. Before enslaving his tribe, Skar was said to be a skilled fighter amongst Titans, showing effective leadership, resources and cunningness.

He is a slave-driver who isn't above killing his fellow apes if it benefits him, showing that he doesn't care about his kind and uses them for his personal gain. Skar also prefers to stay in his throne room while he has his guards abuse his slaves if they make a slight mistake or stop working, with the Red Stripes mapping out the subterranean realm of the Hollow Earth in order to find an escape route.

Skar is a power-hungry conqueror, wishing to expand his new empire over both the surface world and Hollow Earth, and overthrowing the other Titans and humans to make the Great Apes the dominant species. He is also said to be arrogant and overconfident, as he underestimated Kong and his potential, not taking their first confrontation very seriously as he laughs before he was thrown into the ground, likely due to never losing to any of his fights. He is also egotistical, selfish, and overall psychopathic, never caring for anyone other than himself, never values loyalty from the Red Stripes or his second in-command One-Eye, which is one of the traits of a psychopath, as he didn't care if they died or not.

Skar is also wasteful, as he carelessly tosses his food against the wall after One-Eye informs him of the portals found in the temple of the Iwi tribe before he finishes it. He prefers to have his own personal space, as he furiously roars at One-Eye for invading it when One-Eye notified him of Kong's presence, pushing him away from him. He is also quite perverted, since he is shown to have a harem of sex slaves who he either directly rapes or has raped by his guards. Skar is abusive, cruel and unpredictable; as he tosses away his food the female apes cover in fear with their offspring, not knowing what he could do, likely due to the trauma from being abused and raped. He doesn't show any care for his mates nor his offspring, treating them like objects to be tortured, as they were terrified of him.

Skar is a narcissist, another trait of a psychopath, as the novel implies that he orders the offspring to be kept away from their mothers or other apes so they can't form attachments to anyone besides him. He abuses and trains them into becoming as cruel as him. This is shown when Suko violently lashes out at Kong and tries to get him killed by luring him into a lake where a Drownviper lives, until they form a bond with one another.

As such, he's a tyrannical dictator, as he forces the Great Ape tribe to live in horrible conditions, which includes his abuse, fiery biome, torture, and the fact that their bruises and hair loss can be seen, caused by them being stressed out and living in fear (possibly the reason why they couldn't grow as big as Kong). He has little-to-no tolerance for failure or even a slight mistake, as mentioned above that he would have his guards abuse or kill his slaves in case they made a mistake during the work or if they get exhausted, making them very miserable.

The Great Ape Titan slaves (and his offspring such as Suko), even his loyalists, were terrified of Skar King when they see him rising from his throne, and when he leaps into the ground to see Kong, all of them bowed down. They even laughed at Kong's (though fearfully) metal tooth along with Skar, and some were even cowering away when Skar approaches Suko with intent to punish him. Their body languages suggested that the Great Apes were afraid of Skar due to his cruelty, unpredictability, and his brutal forms of punishments (either being beaten at best, or executed and/or fed to Shimo at worst), and after Kong took his title as the King of Hollow Earth and Great Apes, they quickly accepted him as their new Alpha.

He's very sadistic, as he can be seen smiling, as well laughing, enjoying the suffering, pain and torture he causes, even to those he first meets, be it a Great Ape or a different Titan, never showing any hesitation or remorse for the atrocities that he committed, and he's very aware of the things he did were evil. One example where he gave a smug smile to Kong before kicking Gnarled Finger (Suko's caretaker) into the lava, finding it "joyful" and "funny" to see Suko mourning his guardian. He also enjoyed strangling Kong, laughing while he did so.

Furthermore, he has a very sick, dark, twisted sense of humor, as he laughed at Kong for having a metal tooth and forced the other Great Apes to laugh at the latter. His sadistic humor also extends to anything else and not just the Great Apes, such as humans, as when he emerged from the Hollow Earth portal along with Shimo, he laughed at the beach-goers running away from him, before roaring at them to make them even more scared of him, terrorizing them, something that Skar King doesn't feel remorse for.

He has moments of rage and anger; one is where he threatened to abuse or even kill Suko for bringing Kong into his lair. Other examples where he heard Godzilla's roar and gets angry that a Gojira member (the species who he had hatred for) who survived the war and trapped him in the subterranean realm that he considers a prison, is still alive. Another moment where he expressed anger was when Kong laughed at him for losing his tooth (as payback for mocking Kong's metal tooth earlier), showing that he doesn't like being disrespected, even though he did nothing to earn or deserve it.

Skar is malicious, ruthless, and even unpredictable to the point of showing no mercy, which are proven when Gnarled Finger intervened to protect Suko and pleaded Skar King to forgive him since he's still a child, Skar stood up to show his dominance, giving Gnarled Finger a sign that both he and Suko are forgiven, giving them both a false sense of security and forgiveness as he turned around, and he then decided to both punish Suko and provoke Kong as he's giving him a cruel smile, and he then kicked Gnarled Finger into the lava, taking a joy in tormenting Suko, leading an enraged Kong to challenge him for the throne in order to free the Great Apes.

He harbored a hatred towards the Titanus Gojira species, especially Godzilla, due to them trapping him and his clan in the subterranean realm during the Great Titan War, and is implied to be envious due the fact that they have Alpha status and that they have power in ruling over the Titans, something he couldn't do, and he also has desire for vengeance, as he intended to kill Godzilla with Kong's battle axe (it is implied that he killed a lot of Gojiras and used their dorsal plates to create axes in the past) that he stole from Kong in to make himself the "true Alpha Titan" and usurp Godzilla's status.

Skar's relationship with Kong is best described as mutual hatred because Skar treats his slaves with torture and abuse while Kong treats them with compassion, kindness and empathy. Also Kong wants a peaceful life without any conflict, while Skar desires to conquer the surface world, making him a perfect darker reflection to Kong.

Overall, Skar is a cruel and heartless monster both literally and figuratively, lacking any sort of redeeming qualities. He desires to maintain a tyrannical rule over other Titans just to feed into his own ego and takes pleasure in making others suffer. Ultimately, with his utter vileness and terrible treatment of others, he is a Titan who takes pride in being as awful as possible.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Great Ape Titan Physiology: As a great ape Titan, Skar King is incredibly powerful, possessing several physical and supernatural attributes as well as possessing many traits of other apes in his clan. He is also said to be one of the oldest Titans in existence.
    • Superhuman Strength: The Skar King, like all Great Apes, is shown to have immense physical strength despite his slender frame, making him far greater than that of the other Great Apes in his clan. However, Titans of similar strength like Kong, Godzilla and even Shimo can harm Skar King and, potentially, kill him. He is capable of going toe-to-toe with Kong himself, but it becomes evident that the latter's strength surpasses his own, leading the Skar King to rely on Shimo to defeat Kong. It is stated that he almost managed to overpower Godzilla in the past before he and his tribe were ultimately defeated, implying his strength may have diminished due to his old age. He was easily able to overpower other Great Apes within his kingdom and establish a tyrannical regime. Other Great Apes stood little chance against him, shown when he launched Suko's caretaker Gnarled Finger into a lava pit below with a single kick. He is also shown to be strong enough to rip buildings from their foundations using his Whipslash as well as lift Suko with one hand when he attempted to strangle him after he used Kong's battle axe to destroy the crystal that was controlling Shimo.
      • Superhuman Leaping: Skar King's strength extends to his legs which are increased greatly when using his arms in conjunction, allowing him to jump great heights and distances as well as leap down from his throne. He was even able to leap from floating rock to rock during his fight with Kong in the midst of the anti-gravity battle and was also able to leap from building to building while avoiding Godzilla's atomic breath during the final battle in Rio de Janeiro.
    • Superhuman Speed: Despite his old age, Skar King is shown to be incredibly fast, agile, and athletic as his muscles and skeleton are extremely flexible. While Kong relies on his strength, Skar King can utilize his speed and agility in combat and evade attacks. He can jump a great distance from his cave's perch to the floor of his kingdom and during his first battle against Kong, he dodged three swings of his battle axe before kicking him in the jaw, managing to (briefly) knock him down. After disarming Kong with the Whipslash, he easily leaped over him to strangle him from behind. When fighting on the surface world in Rio de Janeiro, he leaped through vast stretches of the city while avoiding Godzilla's atomic breath. Like all primates, Skar King is also capable of knuckle-walking and running on all fours.
    • Superhuman Durability: Like all Great Apes and most Titans, Skar King has thick fur and durable skin which makes him a tough opponent as he is capable of withstanding many injuries that would otherwise prove critical, enough to withstand a brutal confrontation with Kong. He is also able to withstand a powerful punch from Kong's formidable B.E.A.S.T. Glove, albeit losing a tooth in the process, and can even withstand a shot from Godzilla's enhanced atomic breath, with only slight burns on his fur. He even lived through being completely frozen by Shimo's ice breath until Kong smashed his frozen body into pieces. Like all Titans, Skar King can also survive Gravitational Inversion, a planet's worth of gravity reversed in a split second.
    • Superhuman Dexterity: Like all apes, Skar King has five fully opposable digits on each of his hands and feet, allowing him to grab objects and opponents firmly with ease.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Skar King's musculature is considerably efficient. His virtually inexhaustible stamina enables him to exert himself at peak capacity for an undefined period without getting exhausted or wearing out at all, never needing to slow down when fighting against Godzilla and Kong.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Despite his old age, Skar King has great reflexes, which allow him to perform acrobatics in both of his battles with Kong.
    • Superhuman Endurance: Skar King's endurance is shown to be pretty high, capable of enduring attacks from Kong and Godzilla and able to fight while ignoring the pain as well as enduring the collapse and inversion of gravity.
    • Superhuman Senses: Skar King possesses acute senses such as sense of smell and hearing, allowing him to sense other Titans approaching nearby such as Godzilla and Kong's entry into the Hollow Earth.
      • Superhuman Vision: Skar King is shown to display amazing vision, aiding him in fighting off against his enemies and allowing him to locate things from far distances easily.
        • Night Vision: Skar King's vision is enhanced to help him see in the darker environment of the Hollow Earth as, unlike the other Great Apes, he has eyes that are able to glow in the dark.
    • Longevity: Skar King has an incredibly long lifespan as it's been implied that he has been around for millennia, allowing him to live for practically long periods.
    • Subjugation: Through the crystal blade at the end of the Whipslash, the Skar King can control Shimo, manipulating her actions to serve his purposes, despite the latter showing momentary resistance.
    • Communication/Sign Language: Like Kong and the other Great Apes, Skar King is capable of using sign language to communicate.
    • Self-Sustenance: As a Titan, Skar King does not need to eat or sleep, but despite this, he must perform either to quickly replenish his strength or boost his natural healing factor from battles. He is even capable of feasting on the flesh of other Titans as his sole source of sustenance.
    • Accelerated Healing Factor: Despite his body's resistance, Skar King can sustain physical injuries. If wounded, his metabolism enables him to regenerate damaged bodily tissue much faster, depending on how serious his injuries are.

Abilities[]

  • Skar King controlling Shimo with her crystal.

Skar King controlling Shimo with her crystal.

Genius-level Intellect/Master Tactician/Leadership Skills: As the supreme leader of the Great Ape clan, Skar King, with his high intelligence, exhibits cognitive abilities similar to humans, can analyze situations with remarkable acuity, and learns to solve problems. Skar King has keen observational skills and uses them to formulate meticulous plans as he used specially crafted Titan spinal columns as chains to subjugate Shimo effectively. Skar King is intelligent enough to use weapons in combat, such as his Whipslash, and can even command his army of Great Apes, including the Red Stripes, effectively by having his subjects scout while ordering them to do whatever he desires and having them immediately obey. Skar King at one point used Suko as a hostage, knowing that Kong was attached to the smaller ape. He can also understand sign language after his second-in-command One-Eye explained to him about the portal in the Hollow Earth to the surface. He possesses a deep understanding of Shimo's powers, leveraging this knowledge in an attempt to initiate a new Ice Age. Skar King knows the properties of large touch crystals, acknowledging their potential to generate gravitational force while he can cleverly employ Shimo's frostbite blast to counteract their effects.
  • Weapon Mastery: Like all primate Titans, Skar King is capable of wielding objects that he can use as weapons for combat such as his Whipslash and even Kong's axe before losing it during the final battle in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Master Combatant: Like Kong, the Skar King is shown to be a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant as it's been implied that he has been training in all sorts of combat for millennia ever since he and his tribe were imprisoned in the Hollow Earth by Godzilla, making him a deadly and fearsome fighter. His combat skills also extend to the usage of objects that he can use as weapons, most notably his Whipslash which he uses to fight against Kong and Godzilla.
    • Whipslash/Crystal Mastery: Skar King can offensively and defensively use his Whipslash in his fights, as shown when he battled Kong and Godzilla. He can also use the crystal on its tip to command Shimo, pointing it at her to disorient her slightly as he orders her around.
    • Battle Axe Mastery: Skar King is capable of using Kong's battle axe to shatter the frozen-over Iwi barrier and even wield it against him, though he would later lose it during the final battle in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Master Rider: Skar King is shown to be a skilled rider as he is shown riding Shimo, whom he uses as his mount while he and his army of Great Apes are approaching the Iwi civilization.
  • Master Acrobat: The Skar King is shown to be a skilled acrobat and gymnast thanks to his agility, reflexes and strength, allowing him to dodge and counter attacks in both of his battles with Kong.
  • Master Wrestler: The Skar King is shown to be an expert wrestler, allowing him to wrestle Kong with ease in both of his battles with the latter.
  • Climbing Skills: Like all primates, it is assumed that Skar King is good at climbing, though this was never seen on screen apart from him being shown climbing buildings to avoid Godzilla's atomic breath during their battle in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Charisma: Skar King is shown to be very persuasive and charismatic as some of his apes were loyal to him and obeyed his commands not out of fear, but out of loyalty to their king.
  • Intimidation: Skar King is described as being a frightening and terrifying tyrant as he is known to threaten or intimidate his subjects if they don't obey or he will brutally kill them if they fail him. Despite this, he continues to mistreat the apes within his clan to make sure they all stay in line. However, Kong and Godzilla are the only Titans who aren't afraid of the Skar King.

Weaknesses[]

  • Limited Durability: Although Skar King is quite durable, he does have his limits; for example, he is less durable than Titans such as Godzilla as he needed to dodge the Titan's atomic breath to survive it and yelped in pain when it grazed his back. He was also frozen completely solid by Shimo when his control over her broke after Suko used Kong's axe to shatter the crystal controlling Shimo, leaving him completely vulnerable and allowing Kong to smash his frozen body into pieces.
  • Weak Physique: Although he is incredibly strong and powerful, Skar King's physique is inferior compared to that of Kong and Godzilla, which makes him rely more on his cunning and fighting skills than immense strength alone.
  • Weapon Dependency: While the Skar King is able to use his Whipslash effectively, he is almost helpless without it. In the battle in Rio de Janeiro, after Godzilla destroyed the Whipslash, the Skar King mostly depended on dodging the King of the Monsters' attacks before being effortlessly knocked around by him and Kong.

Equipment[]

Weapons[]

  • Skar King using his Whipslash to lasso and tear the top off a building to throw at Kong during their final battle in Rio de Janeiro.

Skar King using his Whipslash to lasso and tear the top off a building to throw at Kong during their final battle in Rio de Janeiro.

Whipslash: Skar King's main weapon of choice is a bone whip-like weapon known as the Whipslash, a Warbat's spinal column connected to its lower mandible. He is capable of using this deadly weapon with great skill to whip, slash and strangle his enemies in combat, block Kong's battle axe and even use it as a tool to lasso and rip the top off a building to throw at Kong during their battle in Rio de Janeiro. Whenever Skar King is not using the Whipslash, he wears it across his torso from the right shoulder downward like a sash.
    • Crystal: Skar King's second weapon of choice is a blue crystal on the tip of the Whipslash which he could use to command Shimo by pointing it towards his targets and can even use it to slash his enemies in combat. This process appears to inflict a significant amount of psychogenic pain on Shimo until she obeys the command given to her, as she is seen slamming her head against the ground when Skar King uses the crystal to command her to attack Kong. This crystal also doubles as a sharp weapon, as it lacerated Kong's hand. However, upon its destruction, Shimo was freed from Skar King's control. The exact way that the crystal hurts Shimo is unknown.
  • Kong's Battle Axe: After their first battle, Skar King claimed Kong's axe for his own so he could use it to be powerful enough to kill Godzilla to get his revenge on the Titan and become the "true alpha Titan". However, he loses it in the final battle.

Relationships[]

Godzilla[]

Skar King always hated Godzilla's ancestors while being viewed as a coward to them. Godzilla despised Skar King because he was responsible for the Titan civil war (also known as the Great Titan War) between both of their ancestors and he killed one of them with the battle axe made from a dorsal plate. Because of this, Godzilla imprisoned Skar King in the Hollow Earth so he wouldn't bring chaos to the surface again. When Skar King sees Godzilla for the first time, he does seem afraid of him but is willing to get his revenge on the Alpha Titan by killing him and Kong, as long he still has the titan axe so he can recharge it with Godzilla's breath and the crystal that still has Shimo under his control.

After the anti-gravity wore off, they found themselves in Brazil, where Skar King misplaced his crystal after Godzilla broke it off so he could end his cowardly reign by vaporizing him. After the crystal is destroyed, Godzilla orders Shimo to rebel against Skar King. After he is frozen and killed by Kong, Godzilla's ancestors are avenged and the civil war between both of their species has now indefinitely ended for good.

Kong[]

Skar King sees Kong as a direct threat to his plans of conquest on Earth after he at first thinks of him as a newcomer and was willing to recruit if he didn't stand by his way, though he isn't afraid to degrade him for his metal tooth, showing how little, he takes him seriously. He isn't, however, afraid to get his hands dirty when dealing with him, as he views him just as easily disposable as the rest of his followers, such as when he sends out Shimo to strike him with her frostbite blast.

After Kong escapes, Skar orders half of his followers to kill Kong and a now betrayer Suko, while he triumphs his victory for the axe as he has search centuries for the weapon so he can use it to recharge it with Godzilla's atomic breath and slaughter the last Gojira in order to reclaim his new territory. Later Skar was almost there to exit hollow earth but much to his disgust Kong has team up with Godzilla, now Skar is ready to kill two titans with one stone by putting the axe to the test if it weren't for the anti-gravity which delays the editable. Skar and Shimo found themselves battling Kong and Godzilla in Brazil after Godzilla breaks the crystal off the Whipslash Kong realize Skar is nothing but a coward because without the crystal Shimo will be free. After Suko destroys the crystal Shimo was free and Kong retrains him, Godzilla orders Shimo to freeze Skar. After he's frozen, Kong shatters him to pieces, ending his reign of terror.

Mothra[]

It's unknown if Skar and Mothra ever met before her countless demises, but all he sees in her is a threat to his plans, especially when she convinces Godzilla and Kong to work together to stop the Skar King. Mothra fought off Skar King's army by sticking them with her silk.

Suko[]

The novelization reveals that Suko is the son of Skar King.

For years, Suko had always been a slave to Skar King while being abused by his father to make him obedient and mold him into a cruel ape-like himself, he also kept Suko from learning about the identity and fate of his mother. When Suko didn't laugh enough for Skar King's liking, the latter killed his son's caretaker to make a point. Later, when Kong stood up to Skar, Suko decided to aid Kong after experiencing real kindness from him by helping him defeat the ape army with assistance from Godzilla and Mothra. After Suko uses Kong's axe to destroy the crystal that freed Shimo, Skar tries to punish or kill him for betraying him while Suko no longer addresses him as his king.

Shimo[]

Shimo is the Skar King's unwilling slave, as he knows when she hesitates to carry out his orders, such as when she initially roars at him in defiance. This results in the Skar King disorienting and hurting her with the crystal on his Whipslash until she does what she is commanded. As such, the Skar King views her as a pet and attack dog to use on those who prove to be far too formidable for him. Thus, he has shown to have a dependency on Shimo for her capabilities, as during the final battle, he attempts to go after the crystal upon Godzilla destroying his Whipslash. Furthermore, when Suko smashes it with Kong's axe, he is visibly enraged at Suko moments before trying to point at Shimo, all in the desperate hope that she would comply with his command one last time. However, because of the abuse he had subjected her to, Shimo instead froze Skar King's body, allowing Kong to kill her former master.

Red Stripes[]

Skar King has several Great Apes loyal to him known as the Red Stripes, who willingly follow his orders and enforce his tyrannical regime. To mark their higher status in his kingdom, they would paint red marks on their chest, arms, and faces. Despite the Red Stripes following his orders loyally, Skar King never cares about them, as he only sees them as tools that he can use to bring terror to his subjects to keep them in line, and he doesn't care if they die in the process.

One-Eye[]

One-Eye is the Skar King's second-in-command and right-hand man, as well as a member of the Red Stripes who is shown to be loyal to the Skar King, repeatedly reporting back to his master and being shown to lead his forces when the Skar King himself is not directing things personally. While One-Eye is still Skar King's right-hand man as he remains loyal to his leader and follows orders, it's revealed that he was being used as a tool by Skar King as he never really cared about him like he never cared about the Red Stripes.

Unnamed mates and offspring[]

The presence of terrified females with fur matching his own that was kept under his guard heavily implies that Skar King has kept his harem by force to produce offspring for him. A fact confirmed in the novelization which also reveals Suko to be one of his offspring. The novelization also implies that Skar King separates his offspring from their mothers to keep them from developing attachments to someone other than him.

After Skar deduces that Suko was the one who brought Kong to his territory, he sadistically kicks Suko's caretaker (stated in the novelization to be a surrogate male caretaker) into a lava pit, forcing the little ape Titan to watch helplessly as his caretaker is being burned alive.

Trivia[]

  • Skar King is the third main villain in the MonsterVerse to be an original Titan, the first being the M.U.T.Os and the second being the Skull Devil.
  • Skar King is the third kaiju to nearly kill Kong in the MonsterVerse, following the Skull Devil, Mechagodzilla and the Kraken.
  • Skar King is the first simian Titan to be a different type of animal other than gorillas.
    • It is also implied that the Skar King appears to be chimeric as he combines aspects of many primates, such as the head/face of a chimpanzee, the arms and legs of a gibbon, and the fur color and body structure of an orangutan.
  • According to director Adam Wingard, the Skar King was inspired by a villainous train conductor Shack from the 1973 film Emperor of the North Pole. During the final fight scene in the film, the main character A-No.1 fights Shack with an axe, while the train conductor is armed with a chain weapon, which also inspired the fight between Kong and Skar King, with Kong fighting the Skar King with his battle axe and the Skar King fighting Kong with his Whipslash.
  • Skar King is the first primate Titan to fight Kong in the MonsterVerse. It also marks Skar King as the first simian kaiju Kong has fought in a live-action film.
    • Skar King is also the first villain to be one of Kong's own kind that he fights.
  • In Skar King's throne room, several female apes holding red or orange-furred infants can be seen. This strongly implies the Skar King reproduced with these females and that Suko might be one of his biological children. This was confirmed in the novelization and confirmed all his children are from non-consensual relationships.
  • The Skar King's aggressive behavior is a nod to real-life chimpanzees' reputation of being violent and aggressive.
  • Unlike the other Great Apes, the Skar King's eyes are blue, which could be due to the fact that he is a species separate from the Great Apes' genus.
  • Skar King's name "Skar" translates into "cleft" or "mountain pass" in Old Norse and "wild" in Scottish English.
  • The initial marketing for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire implies that the red hand prints seen in Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong are Skar King's. In the movie, the red handprints are used as a sign of warning to others that he intends to conquer the world once more.
    • It was theorized that Skar King was the one who sent the Skullcrawlers to Skull Island to kill the Great Apes that escaped from his lair and migrated into Skull Island. If it were true, then Kong succeeds in killing the true culprit who not only indirectly massacred his tribe, but also his parents.
  • Skar King is considered a darker reflection to the following characters:
    • Kong: Both are powerful primate-like Titans who are depicted as alpha Titans, although Skar King represents the worst side of humanity and ape-kind while Kong represents the best side of humanity. While Kong suffers from loneliness as he desired to find more of his species following the deaths of his parents at the jaws of the Skullcrawlers while showing friendliness to the apes after finding the whole colony, Skar King shows no care towards his own species (even to his minions the Red Stripes) and rules his clan through fear, starvation, and physical abuse. Kong even teams up with Godzilla to fight the bigger threats as an ally, while Skar King uses Shimo as his enforcer and attack dog to do his dirty work when the fight doesn't go his way. Kong doesn't seek dominance since he generally acts as a protector of the natural order who defends both Earth and the Hollow Earth from threats, while Skar King desired to conquer the surface world. Skar King serves as an example of what Kong would've become if he hadn't decided to find his own kind, coexisted with humanity and experienced compassion, kindness and companionship.
    • Godzilla: Both are powerful ancient Titans who fought wars extensively while both are shown to be extremely wise and intelligent creatures with supreme leadership capabilities. The only difference is that Godzilla is a powerful force of nature and acts as a protector of the natural order, while Skar King is a strategic and cunning villain who uses intelligence and manipulation, such as his Whipslash, to exploit weaknesses. While the Skar King is shown to be a ruthless dictator who uses intimidation and oppression to control his tribe and launch invasions and doesn't even seem to care for any destruction he causes, Godzilla is shown to be compassionate and seeks to protect Earth from malevolent Titans who sought to conquer or destroy the planet such as Ghidorah and Skar King himself. While Godzilla operates largely on his own, he has had alliances, whereas Skar King manipulates others into his service, including the ice Titan Shimo and his army of apes. Skar King's ultimate goal is world domination and conquest, whereas Godzilla's actions are often portrayed as a necessary force for maintaining a fragile balance between the Titans and humanity. The Skar King represents what Godzilla would've become if he didn't learn to form relationships and find compassion in his heart.
    • King Ghidorah: Both are sadistic, tyrannical, dangerous and ruthless Titans who wanted to proclaim themselves as the alpha Titans and had even enslaved other Titans such as Rodan and Shimo to act like their enforcers. They also met their match with Mothra, became the primary archenemies to Kong and Godzilla and even perished into pieces. While Ghidorah is a malevolent alien who came to Earth to destroy it and turn it into his territory, Skar King is a native of the Hollow Earth who wants to conquer the surface world. It was stated that this was intentional, as director Adam Wingard envisioned Skar King as Kong's arch-nemesis in the same sense that King Ghidorah was Godzilla's arch-nemesis. Unlike Ghidorah, who is symbolized as the Devil, Skar King is symbolized as the depravity of humanity, the worst side of mankind, due to the fact that he is similar to that of a wicked human who is depicted as a murderous, treacherous, manipulative and power hungry tyrant. Skar King is an excellent example of what Ghidorah would've become if he had wiped out both humanity and all life on Earth, killed Godzilla and became the new ruler of all the Titans.
    • Suko: Skar King serves as an example of what Suko would've become if he hadn't met Kong and became friends with him, experienced kindness and compassion and was raised into becoming a cruel and heartless Great Ape like the Skar King.
    • MUTO Prime: Both are titans who share a rivalry against an alpha titan (MUTO Prime for Godzilla and Skar King for Kong). They are both associated with the colors red and orange and knuckle-walk to some extent. They both send out other titans to fight for them (MUTO Prime has her MUTOs and Skar King has Shimo and the Great Apes). However, it's implied that MUTO Prime cares for her children as she wants the best sustenance for her children and that comes in the form of a Titanus Gojira specimen and other titans while Skar King cares for no one but himself. The Skar King represents what the MUTO Prime would've become had she never cared for her offspring at all.
    • Skull Devil/Ramarak: Both are monsters who share a rivalry with Kong and are both alphas of their respective groups of megafauna. However, the Skull Devil's rivalry with Kong began with the former dealing the finishing blow to the latter's parents while Skar King's rivalry with Kong began with the former mistreating the other apes. The Skull Devil and the Skullcrawlers are mainly "destroyers" due to always being hungry while Skar King's motives are pure greed and gluttony. The Skar King represents what the Skull Devil would've become had its motives were pure gluttony.
  • Although the only Titans who interact with him are Godzilla, Kong, Shimo and Suko, the Skar King never interacts with Mothra as, during the anti-gravity battle scene, he was distracted fighting Kong while Mothra was dealing with the Skar King's minions and helping Godzilla fight against Shimo. However, it's implied that they have possibly met centuries ago during the war between the Great Apes and Godzilla's species when Mothra helped Godzilla fight against Skar King and his forces before Godzilla banished them to the Hollow Earth.
  • Skar King has the distinction of being the only known Titan without a scientific name. This is due to humanity on the surface being unaware of his existence.
  • Unlike Kong or Suko, Skar King isn't shown beating his chest. This is accurate, because in real life, unlike gorillas, chest-beating isn't a typical characteristic for orangutans.
  • To make a menacing voice for the Skar King, the filmmakers recorded a variety of animals to create the character's vocal effects. The ones that were selected included lions, leopards, bears, tigers, orangutans, gorillas, donkeys and elephants. One of the Skar King's roars was previously used by Megatron in the 2017 film Transformers: The Last Knight.
  • Skar King was modeled after real-world species of apes. In earlier concepts, he had a heavyset gorilla-like appearance with tribal, aboriginal-esque attire. In order to distinguish him from other primate-like monsters like Kong, creature designer Jared Krichevsky referenced species of hairless apes and gibbons, primarily their lanky body features, when making the Skar King's appearance.
  • Ironically, Skar King at 318 feet tall (or 96 meters tall) wasn't considered smaller than Kong (who is 337 feet tall or 102 meters, 5 meters/19 feet taller than Skar King) due to the fact they have the same shoulder size upon close inspection. His head, however, was the only thing that made him look smaller compared to Kong.
  • Alongside King Ghidorah, the Skar King is regarded as one of the most evil and vilest Titans in the MonsterVerse franchise due to his sadistic and cruel nature.
  • There are three instances where Skar King's roars sound like as if he's attempting to mimic elderly human voices during the final battle in Rio De Janeiro:
    • The first is where he attempts to whip Kong before and after being kicked by the latter before ordering Shimo to tail-whip Kong.
    • The second where Skar King drop kicked Kong after throwing a building at him.
    • The third where Godzilla tosses Skar King using the Whipslash before destroying it.
  • Despite being the representation of the worst side of humanity, Skar is shown to have some satanic references:
    • His fur covered in red war paint is similar to that of the Devil's red tone of skin.
    • It was stated that he and his tribe enacted war on Godzilla, his species, and the other Titans to rule the surface, and later was banished into the subterranean realm of the Hollow Earth by Godzilla, a reference to Lucifer and the fallen angels rebelling against God before being banished out of Heaven.
    • His domain is located in the fiery realm, and has his own Great Ape Titan guards abuse the slaves, a reference equivalent to that of Hell and the sinners suffering in it.
    • In the Book of Revelation, it is said that the demons of Judgment Day will emerge from the ground and cause destruction to the current world (known as Earth) while in the movie, Skar King, along with Shimo, emerged from a Hollow Earth portal into Rio De Janeiro before ordering the latter to commence a second Ice Age. Furthermore, when Shimo enacts the second Ice Age, the Christ the Redeemer statue is seen being frozen.
  • Skar King embodies each of the Seven Deadly Sins:
    • Pride: He views himself as the rightful ruler of the Great Apes and all other Titans, seeking to dominate the world.
    • Envy: He envied Kong's position and sought to usurp his lineage as the king of the Hollow Earth.
    • Gluttony: He hoarded resources and likely starved his subjects to maintain his control and power.
    • Greed: He desires to conquer the surface world and establish a new empire for his species.
    • Wrath: He wields extreme power through the enslaved Titan Shimo, unleashing destruction and suffering.
    • Sloth: His reign of oppression likely led to a stasis of stagnation and suffering for his subjects, who were too fearful to resist.
    • Lust: His desire for power extended to his subjects, whom he treated cruelly and as mere objects.
