Skeletor is the main antagonist of Filmation's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe franchise. He is He-Man's arch-nemesis and the leader of the Evil Warriors, as well as the former apprentice of Hordak.
He was voiced by Alan Oppenheimer,, who also voiced Mer-Man in the same series, Gmork in The Neverending Story and later King Grayskull in the 2021 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series.
Personality[]
Skeletor is perfidy incarnate. Cruel, greedy, arrogant, hungry for power and full of himself, he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, both to destroy and to conquer. He treats his minions poorly due to their continued incompetence but treats them no better than with insults even if they achieve something. When he makes an alliance with an outside force, he always plans in advance to shamelessly betray it.
Skeletor maintains a fierce rivalry with his former master Hordak, hating him since he abandoned him to his fate years ago. Each of their encounters comes with threats, insults and the individual's ego of superiority. Skeletor sometimes plots to overthrow Hordak and take control of the Horde of Evil to aid his goals of conquering Eternia.
Despite primarily being a jerk with no kind words or actions to spare for anyone, Skeletor has shown some noble traits from time to time such as genuine care for his pet panther, Panthor; and in the Christmas special he grows to care for the two Earth children and the dog he was taking care of enough to defy Horde Prime and save them from his grasp, though he himself denied any heroic or nice deeds he performed that day.
Biography[]
In the past, when Hordak and his Horde invaded Eternia, Hordak took Skeletor on as his apprentice. He later helped Hordak break into the palace and kidnap the King and Queen's twin babies. While Hordak made off with one of the babies, Skeletor was captured by Man-At-Arms who forced him to divulge the whereabouts of his master. Skeletor revealed that Hordak had retreated to his base of operations Snake Mountain, leading them to go there to rescue the baby. However, when cornered, Hordak opened up a random dimensional portal (later revealed to have led to Etheria) and leaped through with the baby Princess Adora still in his possession.
While Hordak was gone, Skeletor remained on Eternia and raised an army of powerful minions of his own and took over as ruler of Snake Mountain. In pursuit of his goal of ruling Eternia, Skeletor sought to conquer the mysterious fortress of Castle Grayskull, from which He-Man draws his powers. Should he gain control of Castle Greyskull, Skeletor would be able to conquer not only Eternia, but also the entire universe.
In the original series, Skeletor is the main antagonist, either appearing in the flesh, or acting thru one of his minions, such as Evil-Lyn or Whiplash. Due to the semi-comedic nature of the show, Skeletor is shown to be arrogant, whiny, childish, and occasionally incompetent, despite he's the chief villain in the original series, always as He-Man's archenemy.
Examples of his immature behavior is when he attempted to hijack a circus simply because the owner refused to perform at Snake Mountain, throwing a tantrum at his henchmen's stupidity, and repeating that he isn't a nice man. In one of the post-series mini-comics, it's hinted that Skeletor is He-Man's uncle, Prince Keldor.
It should be noted, however, that in the early episodes of the series, (such as Diamond Ray of Disappearance and She-Demon of Phantos) Skeletor was portrayed in a much more serious light. His schemes and personality truly were evil and ruthless. It was only until the series reduced him to comedic relief that he was seen as largely incompetent.
In the spin-off series She-Ra: Princess of Power, sometimes, he would go out of his way to menace She-Ra and He-Man and attempt to overthrow Hordak out of revenge for being abandoned during Princess Adora's kidnapping.
Powers and Abilities[]
Skeletor is an expert in magic, wielding the Havoc Staff as the primary source of his powers. He is capable of telekinesis, mind control, teleportation, sleeping spell, transformation, ice magic, energy and electric ray, illusions and a mastery of black magic. In addition, Skeletor is also good at creating technological weapons and possesses above average physical strength.

(Evil-Lyn then shots her magic in the Dragon Pearl) Sorceress: I, I must get help (using telepathy) He-Man, He-Man, He-Man come to Grayskull. He-Man: (to his alies) C'mon! The Sorceress is calling. There's some trouble at Grayskull. (The Socceress is then sucked into the Dragon Pearl by Skeletor) Jitsu: You are trapped the Sorceress in the Dragon Pearl. (Skeletor then opens the bridge into Castle Grayskull and enters) At last Castle Grayskull and all it's secrets are mine. He-Man will not foot in Grayskull again. (He-man and his alies arrives and the gate is blocked) He-Man: What in Eternia is going on? Skeletor: Grayskull has fallen He-Man, to me. The Sorceress is my prisoner! And with her power added to the Dragon Pearl, all of Eternia will be mine (laughs). |

(Skeletor and He-Man fights, then He-Man grabs Skeletor's foot and pushes him down below, however Skeletor manage to hold on a rock) Skeletor: Help! He-Man: Hang on Skeletor (He-Man then rescues Skeletor) Skeletor:He-Man you're a fool. You know I wouldn't have saved you. He-Man: I guess I value life more than you do Skeletor, even yours. Skeletor: Well I value this. (then points the Dragon Pearl against He-Man) Take your last look! You won't see it again... ! (then suddenly a dragon comes from behind and Skeletor drops the Dragon Pearl down below because of getting startled) Oh no, no. Well at least you'll never see your precious Sorceress again. (then Skeletor escapes on his War-Sled) |

- Unlike most versions, Skeletor in the Filmation series has some level of redeeming qualities due to the censors at the time and always lost to He-Man and shows himself to be more harmless. On top of showing more of a legitimate capacity to be good
- Unlike many of his incarnations before and after, this Skeletor was never Keldor and has no blood connection to He-Man. Even though the original mini comics also depicted Skeletor as unrelated to He-Man due to his initial backstory as an interdimensional demon, that aspect was later retconned into having been a possession-induced fake memory and him being a mutated Keldor all along.
- The rivalry between Skeletor and Hordak alludes to one of the greatest conflicts within a fictional universe: Magic versus Technology.
