Skowl the Startling is a supporting antagonist and the second boss in the hit game, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. He is a giant owl, the leader of the Hootz and an ally of Lord Fredrik.

Biography[]

Skowl is located at the top of Autumn Heights, in the level Mountaintop Tussle. The Kongs encounter a group of Hootzes. One of the Hootzes notices them but seems more intent on dropping a banana onto a stone slab. A large figure crushes the banana with a wooden hammer. The Kongs are shocked. The owls hear their outburst and turn their heads. The figure throws the hammer away and reveals themself as a giant owl with a beard named Skowl. The Kongs then rush forward to take him out, destroying the stone slab/altar. The fight begins.

Like all bosses, Donkey Kong needs to hit him 9 times to defeat him. He starts the battle by throwing feathers that damage the Kongs. Then, he will spawn three eggs that spawn baby owls, which you must throw back at him. After the first hit, he flies to the bottom of the arena, ready to charge and knock the Kongs out. The Kongs must use it as an advantage to hit him again. Skowl can also create ice spikes that the Kongs must avoid. You must hit him one more time.

After he is hit three times, he gets angry, and goes to phase two. You must jump in the barrel in the middle of the arena to proceed to the next phase. In this phase, he will flap his wings to create wind. Hootzes and Baby owls will fly towards the Kongs during this time. You must grab the baby owl, use the Hootzes to climb up to Skowl, and throw the baby owl at him. After another hit, he will rain feathers that cover the entire arena. except for one of the barrels. You must use that barrel at one of the bottom corners of the arena to avoid the attack. You must then run to the other side, for he will do it again. After that, he will spawn eggs with his wings. Some of them contain baby owls, which, again, you must throw back at him.

After three more hits, he gets angrier and goes to phase three. He will do some of his previous attacks, like his feather attack. He also has two new ones. His first attack has owls with helmets. There are three swarms of those owls. The first two swarms are all owls with helmets, while the third has some baby owls in them. The second new attack consists of him raining down giant eggs, which will explode out his minions, which will be horned. He will do this five times, with the last one having himself come out of the egg without his helmet. You must then jump on his head.

After all nine hits are done, Donkey Kong will beat him up and launch him away. Skowl is never seen again for the rest of the game.
