~ Slappy on his motivations in "Son of Slappy" |
Slappy the Dummy is a major antagonist in the Goosebumps franchise created by R.L. Stine. He serves as the titular main antagonist of the Night of the Living Dummy saga. As given by his description, he is a sinister wood puppet who intends to curse others into being puppets. He is considered one of the most popular and most evil creatures in the series, as well as being the key factor to the success of the aforementioned saga.
In the books, Slappy is brought to life by his owners who either find him, buy him or are gifted him when they say the words 'Karru Maru Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano." Once alive, he begins causing havoc in his owner's life which they are typically blamed for. He does this so that he can turn them into his slaves. Luckily, he is usually defeated by being broken or put to sleep.
Slappy also has his own series called SlappyWorld where he is the narrator of each book and main antagonist of half of them. He occasionally proves to be helpful though only when it serves him.
In the TV series, he was portrayed by Annick Obonsawin in three episodes as her first villainous role, and Cal Dodd in two others.
Appearance[]
As described in the books, Slappy has wavy brown hair painted atop his wooden head and freckles dotted along his cheeks. His lips are painted bright red and curl up into a sinister smile. The lower lip, however, sports a chip in the corner, giving Slappy's grin an unsettling crooked appearance. His eyes are described as being a cold blue and almost lifelike in appearance. Slappy wears a dark grey, double-breasted suit, with brown leather shoes and a red bow-tie. His shirt is nothing more than a white paint application on the chest, with a collar stapled on the neck.
For the television program, Slappy's appearance was altered from its depiction in the books and the cover artwork. His head no longer appeared to be made out of wood and instead seemed to be constructed out of a plaster-like material. His now-unruly hair was painted auburn, while his freckles were removed, and his eye color changed to green. His dark grey suit was changed to a black tuxedo, with the addition of a real shirt, suspenders, and matching red bow-tie/cummerbund/boutonniere combo. He is probably more comedic in the TV version as well.
Personality[]
Slappy the Dummy constantly insists he is not a "dummy" or a fool... but rather, you are. He's evil and even sadistic. One of his primary objectives is to enslave humans to serve his bidding. Slappy has a cutting sense of humour, and he takes pleasure in slewing insults. A recurring theme in his books is him roasting various people to get his owner in trouble during ventriloquist performances, as everyone believes the performer is making the offensive remarks. Slappy is a cruel prankster, often making a terrible mess wherever he goes. Typically, he allows others to take the blame for his misdoings. Slappy also loves bragging about himself, usually boasting about how smart and awesome he is. This is mostly present in the introductions and interruptions in Goosebumps SlappyWorld.
Slappy is well aware of the fact that he is evil and goes out of his way to make others miserable because he enjoys it. He finds the act of doing a good deed repulsive. One of his most recognized traits is his rudeness. Slappy is very mean-spirited and constantly insults people over things such as their weight. While mostly a malicious prankster and bully, Slappy has also attempted to murder people throughout the books, such as attempting to decapitate two children in Slappy New Year. Slappy is also a confirmed pedophile, as he tried to force a young girl to be his bride in Bride of the Living Dummy. His greatest fear is being put to sleep forever.
In the 1990s television show, Slappy is shown to be the same sadistic control freak he is in the books, and in some ways is even more dangerous. In his debut episode, Slappy set out to ruin his new owner Amy's life by framing her for a series of escalating misdeeds, from breaking a child's hand to sneaking into her parents' room to smash a guitar over them for fun. Slappy brought a dummy named Rocky to life in his second appearance as part of his scheme to take the household and convert the family into his slaves. For amusement, Slappy transforms the protagonist's cousin into a helpless dummy aware of his current state but unable to do anything about it. In his final appearance, Slappy targets another pair of sisters after striking a deal with a failing ventriloquist. Around that time, Slappy entertains himself with murdering other sapient dummies and keeping their shards as trophies. He then tries to make the protagonist's younger sister his bride and, upon being destroyed, latches himself onto the protagonist's younger brother.
However, Slappy is presented as an anti-hero in Slappy's Nightmare, The Streets of Panic Park and The Dummy Meets the Mummy though this is for his own self-preservation more than genuine goodness. In Slappy's Nightmare, he even does good deeds though for his own self-preservation.
Biography[]
Goosebumps (original series)[]
Past[]
Slappy has three contrasting origin stories.
The first story (told through the majority of the books) is that Slappy was originally created by an unnamed evil sorcerer by being carved out of the cursed wood of a stolen coffin, alongside Mr. Wood. When the sorcerer was about to die, he channelled his soul into Slappy's body, effectively becoming Slappy. This sorcerer also created other dummies named Goldie and Wally. Each of Slappy's sibling dummies were also evil and could be brought to life by magic.
The second origin story (told in I am Slappy's Evil Twin) is that Slappy was created by a friendly toymaker and ventriloquist named Franz Maher, who learned magic spells from his friend, a sorcerer named Kanduu. Kanduu taught Franz how to bring his dummies to life. However, Kanduu was evil, and brought Franz's dummy Mr. Wood to life to make him attack Franz just for the sake of being evil. Franz fled to the United States and set up a toy shop while also using his magic to bring his dummies to life. Slappy was one of these dummies, as was another dummy named Snappy. Franz tried to make his dummies be nice, but while they were nice to him, they were evil to everyone else.
The third and final origin story (told in Slappy Beware, which states that the first origin story was just one of several rumoured origins told over the ages and wasn't actually true while completely ignoring the second story, suggesting that it had been retconned) states that Slappy was built by a wizard named Ephraim Darkwell. Darkwell was initially a non-malevolent magic user who simply liked bringing his dummies to life and wanted to be left in peace. His village learned of his magic and accused him of being evil, forming an angry mob to attack his cottage. Enraged, Darkwell created Slappy for the purpose of making humanity suffer for scorning him. Whatever the case, Slappy is a dummy built and brought to life by a magic user. He takes the form of a ventriloquist dummy but is granted life, threatening everyone around him and becoming more of a threat as the series progressed. The only way to make him live is by saying the following incantation "Karru Marri Odonna Loma Molunnu Karrano" (said to mean "You and I are one now"). Written down on a business card, he keeps the spell in his pocket. Almost every new owner reads out the spell, causing the electricity to act strange for a few seconds.
Night Of The Living Dummy[]
Slappy would soon be found in the dumpster by Lindy Powell, later becoming her imaginary friend and ventriloquist dummy. Lindy's sister, Kris, becomes extremely jealous of the attention Lindy is getting at school and from their mom. Soon, Kris gets her own dummy, Mr. Wood. Lindy reads some magic words on a piece of paper found in Mr. Wood's pocket. They read, "KARRU MARRI ODONNA LOMA MOLONU KARRANO." This brings Mr. Wood to life and he causes all sorts of mischief. Soon, Mr. Wood is crushed by a steam roller. Following Mr. Woods's death, Slappy becomes alive. Kris and Lindy enter their house and find Slappy standing up on his own two feet. Slappy then asks if the other dummy is gone.
Night Of The Living Dummy II[]
Book[]
Slappy has a new home and it's with the Kramer family. Mr. Kramer gives Slappy to Amy as a gift and as a replacement for Amy's older dummy, Dennis. Amy then finds a paper in Slappy's pocket that reads, "KARRU MARRI ODONNA LOMA MOLONU KARRANO." This brings Slappy to life and he causes lots of trouble for Amy. Slappy insults Amy's parents, ruins Sara's room, holds a little girl's hand tightly, doesn't let go, and beats up Amy if she disobeys him. Sara and Jed find out that Slappy is the one doing all those bad things and decide to pitch in and help Amy defeat Slappy. Later, Slappy is subdued by Amy's previous dummy, Dennis. He splits Slappy's head in two.
TV[]
Slappy gets found once more and sent to a new home. He goes into the custody of Amy Kramer, for a new ventriloquist act. He begins causing chaos and havoc in the household, wrecking Amy's dad's guitar, vandalizing her sister's painting, and even attacking a child. All of this gets blamed on Amy, and soon Slappy has taken hold of her entire life. Fortunately, another living dummy named Dennis, subdues him by splitting his head open.
Night Of The Living Dummy III[]
Book[]
Trina O'Dell and Dan O'Dell's father, Danny O'Dell finds Slappy in a dumpster and brings him home. He repairs Slappy's head and gives him the name, Smiley. Trina reads a paper found in Slappy's pocket that says, "KARRU MARRI ODONNA LOMA MOLONU KARRANO." This brings Slappy to life. Slappy then starts making messes around the house with Rocky at the scene of the crime. Dan and Trina want to bust whoever is doing it and are surprised to see Slappy causing the mischief. He says they are his slaves, but Trina and Dan won't take it. They dump Slappy in a well, but he returns the next day. Trina and Dan read the magic words that brought Slappy to life, thinking they could put him to sleep as well. This fails, but all the other dummies come to life and start ganging up on Slappy. Slappy is then defeated, but Zane rats out Trina and Dan for being in the attic when they're not supposed to. Zane leaves to go home the next day, and Danny O'Dell tells Trina to bring Zane a dummy to take home with him. Trina gives Zane Slappy as revenge for snitching on her and Dan. Slappy is then carried off to the car with Zane. Slappy winks at Trina and Dan.
TV[]
Slappy gets bought by a dummy collector, and gets his head fixed, bringing him back to life. He begins putting his evil soul into other dummies, causing havoc in the household. This is, once again, blamed on the children of the house. But this time, Slappy attempts to turn the family into dummies too. He gets stopped, however, when lightning hits him in the head, blowing him up and killing him.

TV Show[]
In the TV show, Slappy is more villainous than in the books. For example in Night of the Living Dummy 2 in the book, his worst act is simply painting Amy's name in Sarah's room and squeezing a girl's hand painfully (though he doesn't break it). In the TV episode, he attempts to slam a guitar on Amy's dad (though it's implied he knew Amy would stop him and break the guitar and wasn't going to hit her dad). In the Night of the Living Dummy 3 episode, he mistreats Rocky and turns Zane into a dummy. In Bride of the Living Dummy book, he threatens to hurt but not kill the kids at the birthday party, doesn't kill anyone except Mary-Ellen (which is done in self-defense), and desires to make Jillian, who is sixteen, his "bride". In the TV episode, he is stated by Jimmy to have killed his rivals (although they were other dummies, not humans) and intends to make Jillain's younger sister Katie, who is around the age of a twelve-year-old, his "bride".
He also appears in the comic book series as the main villain of the first arc and is set to appear in others. He appears in the first story arc Monster at Midnight as the main antagonist leading the monsters to attack two sisters and later appears in the second arc Download and Die! where he team-ups up with The Creeps to antagonize three young girls. Slappy also appears in the short story crossover Gaslighted: Slappy the Ventriloquist Dummy vs. Aloysius Pendergast, where Aloysius Pendergast the protagonist of the book series of the same name fights off Slappy.
