The Sleeping Giant of Del Mar is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Death) in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It is a massive monster made of rocks, moss and trees who slumbers next to the city of Del Mar.
Its vocal effects were provided by Frank Welker.
History[]
Most of the giant's history is unknown. At some point, it went to sleep next to the city of Del Mar. The people of Del Mar are aware of its presence and likely do what they can not to wake it.
While fighting against Del Mar's corrupt governor and his men, Puss in Boots sets off a stash of fireworks that end up awakening the giant from its sleep. Angry at being disturbed, the giant attacks the mansion, grabs the governor's soldiers and stuffs them into its "bag", as well as a young village boy and the governor himself. To save the town, Puss launches himself towards the giant with his sword and embeds it into the giant's thumb, causing immense pain. The giant throws Puss away, but the feline makes his way back, so the giant then grabs the town's bell and uses it like a weapon against Puss. However, Puss outwits the giant by blinding it with its own eye-patch, causing the bell's rope to wrap itself around the giant's antlers and the bell itself to hit it in the face, knocking it out.
After defeating the giant, Puss decides to sing a song to the people to celebrate his victory, but then the bell snaps off its rope and crushes him. This causes Puss to lose the eighth of his nine lives, thus leading to the events of the film.
It's unknown what happens to the giant after the fight, seeing as by the time Goldilocks and the bears arrive in Del Mar it's nowhere to be seen, with only its footprints left. It's possible the townspeople somehow removed its body or it managed to survive, leaving the town for fear of going through a similar ordeal again.
Trivia[]
- The giant is noted to have cylindrical ears similar to the ogres in the Shrek universe, which is notable as both are large humanoids starring as the main antagonists of many fairy tales.
- This also calls back to how Puss in Boots defeated an ogre in the original fairy tale.
- The fight between Puss and the giant actually foreshadows Puss's eight death as during the fight, the bell the giant uses tolls eight times in total including the final time when it drops down and kills Puss. As a church bell is frequently used as iconography of someone's death, the eight times the bell tolls represents Puss's eight deaths so far.
- Puss's quote of "Hey, you wanna see something cool?" during his fight with the giant has become a popular Internet meme, with the bell flying at the giant's face being replaced with other objects rapidly approaching the fourth wall.
