Neil Ackroyd, known by his nickname Slug, is a fictional character and supporting antagonist in the British soap opera Coronation Street.

He was played by former actor Marshall Lancaster, who also played Perry Dans and Keith Parr on Casualty.

Biography[]

Slug was the boyfriend of troublemaker Becky Granger, who tried to come between her and her friends Roy and Hayley Cropper. He stole the Croppers car and convinced Becky to come along for the ride which she accepted. Slug ended up damaging the car and fled to let Becky take the blame, although she was eventually forgiven and welcomed back by the kind-hearted Croppers.

Slug was apprehended by corrupt police detective DC Hooch in 2009, who forced Slug to help take part in bringing Becky down in exchange for letting Slug leave. Slug turned up at Becky's workplace and home the Rovers Return Inn on Coronation Street, where he claimed to be a changed man. Becky fell for his act and felt happy that he also turned his life around. On Becky's wedding day to Steve McDonald Slug planted drugs in the pub, which was then raided by the police during the reception and Becky was arrested and subsequently charged.

Slug was spotted by barmaid Betty Williams. Steve and Lloyd tracked down Slug and forced him to return to the street where he was threatened by Becky. Slug explained his situation and that DC Hooch threatened to send him down. Slug decided to side with Becky and Steve and during a confrontation with DC Hooch Slug threatened to expose his corruption unless he dropped the charges and left them all alone. Hooch called Slug's bluff due to him being a drug dealer, although did end up changing his mind and dropped the charges against Becky. Slug left the area and wasn't seen again.
