The Small Rattler is a minor supporting antagonist in the 2020 action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II.
He is a cocky and young member of a group called the Rattlers, who enslave and torture many people they find by luck on their patrols.
He was voiced by Bobby Hall, also known as the rapper Logic.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
After the Cordyceps outbreak plunged the world into chaos, the Small Rattler became a member of the Rattlers, a sadistic militia-slaver group operating out of Santa Barbara. Like his comrades, he was deeply involved in the enslavement and torture of both survivors and infected individuals. His gear and appearance indicate a twisted pride in brutality, with seven tally marks on his vest symbolizing his kills or captures, and slogans like “Ruthless” (tattooed above his eyebrow) and “Hail to the King” decorating his gear.
He seemed close with the Large Rattler, who gave him orders and looked out for him.
The Last of Us Part II[]
The small Rattler was present during Abby Anderson and her young ally Lev's capture, attacking Abby with a bat and helping pin her down on the ground with a beating. He was shot through the arm with an arrow by Lev and in revenge, savagely beat Abby with the baseball rat, only stopping when the larger man told him they need their captures alive. He was then beckoned to come over and groaned in pain as he pulled the arrow out. He then tied up Lev to take them back to the base.
Months later, the two of them found Ellie hanging from one of their traps. The small Rattler wanted to be done for the day, figuring that Ellie would not last a month due to her injuries, and backed up into a hanging clicker, yelping and nearly getting bitten in the process.
Ellie laughed at him and told him that he "shit his pants", to which he angrily picked her up and forced her arm into the clicker's mouth to punish her for laughing at him, saying she'll die anyways since she's already wounded. Ellie jerked her arm forward, dragging his with it into the clickers range, then forced his neck in front of it. He then brutally had his throat ripped out and his silenced submachine gun was taken by Ellie, who used it to cripple the large Rattler.
Personality[]
The Small Rattler was a sadistic, impulsive, and arrogant enforcer. He thrived in the lawless brutality of the new world, eager to dish out violence without hesitation. During the capture of Abby, he laughed and beat her savagely with a wooden baseball bat, showing no remorse even when she was defenseless.
He was also reckless and not particularly intelligent, a trait that ultimately led to his demise. His lack of situational awareness, when backing into a clicker trap while taunting Ellie, shows that while he was physically threatening, his overconfidence made him vulnerable. His cruelty was mixed with cowardice, revealed in how quickly he panicked when injured or frightened.
Trivia[]
- His tattoo and vest slogan “Ruthless” directly foreshadow both his behavior and his downfall.
- His death scene is considered one of the more viscerally satisfying revenge kills in the game, next to Jordan's and Manny's.
- His actor, Robbie Hall (Logic), auditioned for the role of Jesse but did not receive the part. A couple years later, he got a call from Naughty Dog and was given the role of the small Rattler instead.
