Gold... Prisoners... I don't care about such things. All I wish to see are humans within a fiery apocalypse. Trying to escape. All I wish to hear is the sound of snapping bones crushed under the hooves of horses. I don't even need an excuse. None at all...
~ Snake Baron explaining his true nature to the Mayor.

The Snake Baron, also reffered to as The Snake Lord, is a minor antagonist in the Berserk anime/manga series. He was a cruel ruler of Koka who demanded gold and food from Mayor of Koka.

He was voiced by the late Kan Tokumaru in the 1997 anime adaptation, and by Lex Wutas in the English dub.

Appearance[]

Normal form[]

Snake Baron is a creepy-looking man with pale skin, sharp teeth, pointy ears, and empty-looking eyes.

After he starts raiding his town, he is shown wearing armor that resembles a cobra.

Released form[]

When transformed into his released form, Snake Baron reveals his true, monstrous nature as a serpent-like creature. His head transforms into that of a giant, grotesque snake with menacing fangs, glowing eyes, and scaled skin. The texture of his scales is slimy and uneven. His human torso is grotesquely fused with the upper body of a cobra, creating an abomination-looking hybrid. His elongated snake body stretches into a massive tail. His upper torso also retains human-like arms, though they appear larger, more muscular, and are covered in serpent-like scales.

Personality[]

Snake Baron is a sociopathic and oppressive ruler of a town called Koka. He has been shown to be an unapologetically sadistic and barbaric individual, showing no care towards other people living in Koka. He is also very misanthropic, believing that humankind is nothing more than just morsels for his apostle-kind, and wants to see all of them die in very brutal ways.

In the battle against Guts, he portrayed himself as a formidable individual because he was an apostle. He exhibited confidence in his powers and abilities, often underestimating his opponents. After revealing his released form, his self-assurance grew even stronger, and his disdain for humanity became increasingly more evident.

Biography[]

Past[]

Not much is known about Snake Baron's past. But at some point in his life, he became the ruler of a town called Koka. He also obtained apostle powers, most likely due to some sacrifice of a loved one by using a behelit.

Golden Age Arc[]

Snake Baron was seen on the prowl in a forest, which scared away a few wanderers before they could get murdered by him. He is also one of the many Apostles seen during the eclipse that transformed Griffith into the Fifth God Hand member known as Femto. He also sadistically laughed with the other Apostles when Femto violently raped Casca out of spite while an enraged Guts was forced to the whole thing play out.

Black Swordsman Arc[]

While feasting on some human flesh, Snake Baron is informed about Guts' arrival in Koka and the attack on his henchmen in a local tavern. Curious about his identity, he contemplates the implications. Shortly after, the Mayor of Koka arrives, seeking to appease the Snake Baron. The mayor reveals that he has imprisoned Guts and offers additional gold and human sacrifices in the hope of obtaining forgiveness from him. Snake Baron dismisses the mayor's groveling, accusing him of fearing for his own life more than protecting the townspeople. Revealing his true disdain for worldly wealth and prisoners, the Snake Lord declares his preference for witnessing humanity's annihilation, envisioning a fiery apocalypse filled with the sound of bones crushed beneath horse's hooves. As his men drag the mayor away, the Snake Lord dons his battle armor, resolved to destroy his own town.

Snake Baron soon unleashes his wrath upon the town, leading his henchmen in a massacre of the townspeople and setting Koka ablaze. Meanwhile, Guts having escaped confinement, intercepts the slaughter, cutting down several of Snake Baron's men before confronting the apostle himself. Arrogantly confident in his strength, Snake Baron engages Guts, attempting to skewer him with his halberd. However, Guts counters by shooting him off his steed and sending him crashing into a building.

Enraged, Snake Baron reveals his released form, declaring his intent to devour Guts alive. Using his immense strength, he overpowers Guts, eventually lifting him by his right arm to mock humanity’s frailty. In a decisive move, Guts fires his cannon arm at point-blank range, obliterating half of the Snake Lord’s face and creating an opening to cleave the apostle in two with the Dragon Slayer. Reduced to a mangled torso, the Snake Lord is helpless as Guts tortures him, sadistically shooting him repeatedly and forcing him to beg for his life.

In Snake Baron's final moments, he notices Guts' Brand of Sacrifice and recognizes him as a survivor of the Eclipse. When questioned about the whereabouts of the God Hand. Guts leaves him to die, buried alive under the burning ruins of Koka, his once-terrifying reign brought to an end.
