“ | She was not laughing, or jeering, or talking. She did not sneer at me or turn away. She looked at me, though; and for a moment I saw myself reflected in her eyes. I will not scream. I will not give them that satisfaction. They will have my body, but my soul and my story are my own, and will die with me. The goose-grease begins to melt and glisten upon my skin. I shall make no sound at all. I shall think no more on this. I shall think instead of the snowflake on her cheek. I think of her hair as black as coal, her lips as red as blood, her skin, snow-white. | „ |
~ The Queen's last words in Snow, Glass, Apples, describing Snow White's execution of her own stepmother. |
Snow White is the main antagonist of Neil Gaiman's short story and graphic novel Snow, Glass, Apples, arguably the darkest take on the classic Snow White story, with Snow White being presented here as a truly nightmarish, blood-sucking fiend.
Biography[]
Snow White was the child of a king and the step-child of the queen who raised her since Snow White's mother passed away at childbirth for unknown reasons. The Queen's step daughter doesn't like to eat food, and although startled by that fact, the queen doesn't come to question it until one night where Snow White asks for food and the Queen goes to get some apples. When Snow White finishes, she drinks the Queen's blood almost like a vampire and departed, much to the fear of her step-mother. The Queen then barricades herself from the vampire, while the King himself grows weak until he is found dead with scars scattering his body, revealing that Snow White brutally tortured her father both physically and sexually. Horrified by this, the Queen takes to end this beast that is her step daughter by sending a huntsman to remove her heart, and although unsuccessfully killing her, the Queen keeps the heart with her.
Later, we find out that Snow White has been luring men into sex to snack on them, and thus, causing fewer and fewer forest folk to come to the kingdom's Spring Fair to trade goods. This resulted in the Queen disguising herself as a peddler woman and then poisoning Snow White with tainted apples, killing Snow White for some time. This ensured peace for a few years more, but sometime later, a prince finds her body and through money or force, he obtains her and soon dislodges the last piece of apple through his vile desires for his bedroom, reviving Snow White. She then manipulates the prince to allow her to reclaim her heart and has her mother soon after executed, taking her throne and almost surely continuing on her reign of bloody terror.
Personality[]
Snow White in this story is the entire opposite of her standardly good counterpart. While normal versions of Snow White was loving and respectful of every living creature be it human, animal, or plant, this Snow White comes of as a misanthropic fiend who takes no qualms in torturing and murdering her own family, with this evil nature even being apparent since childhood.
