She is the ruthless daughter of deceased mob boss Carmine Falcone and a rival of Oswald "Oz" Cobb, her father's chief enforcer. After digging too deep into her father's crimes, she was incriminated by him and sent to Arkham State Hospital for a decade, where she would come to learn about a psychoactive substance that would later come to be known as "Bliss".
Following her release from Arkham State Hospital, Sofia was quick to return to the family business: now with her brother Alberto in charge, the two of them would plan to release Bliss onto the public. After Alberto's death under suspicious circumstances, Sofia quickly deduced that her former driver, Oswald, was involved in his passing.
Sofia is the daughter of Gotham City mob boss Carmine Falcone and Isabella Gigante, born January 3, 1985.
One day, during a hide-and-seek game with her brother Alberto, Sofia would walk into their parents' room to seek him in there. Instead, she came across with her mother's body hanging from the ceiling. Sofia innocently tried to wake her up - to no avail. Carmine then entered the room, embracing her and telling her to not see her mother's hanging corpse. Sofia complied, and her attention instead went to her father's bloody nails, a sign of struggle.
The Hangman[]
“
Sofia: I've never doubted you. I love you. And I know there's an explanation. Carmine: An explanation for what? Sofia:You had scratches on your hands the day mom died. But I know they weren't from her. I know that. I... They were from... something else. I... I don't know what, but... Something. Right? Carmine: My... sweet Sofia. What has happened to you? You're clearly not yourself. You're confused, sick. I think you need to leave before you make a scene.
Ten years before the events of The Penguin and The Batman, Sofia was to be the chairwoman of the Isabella Falcone Foundation, a foundation dedicated to helping women struggling with mental health issues such as depression, in honor of her late mother. During this time, she would also have Oswald Cobb as her personal driver.
Falcone would be investigated by the murder of five women (likely including Selina Kyle's mother) who had connections to the Iceberg Lounge and died from strangulation, the same way as Sofia's mother. During the inauguration of the Isabella Falcone Foundation, Sofia was approached by a reporter invested in the case by the name of Summer Gleeson. While originally giving up to her invitation to meeting up, Sofia gave in that same night. Once presented with the irrefutable evidence that her father was responsible for the murders, she broke down and told the reporter to cut off all investigation, as her father would never do such a thing.
Oswald, who drove her there, would snitch on her to her father, Carmine, in hopes of a raise. Sofia was called into his office and confronted him about his bloody nails the day her mother was killed, coming to realize that he was behind the Hangman killings and that her mother was another victim of his. Carmine then ordered Sofia to be incarcerated for his crimes, where she was framed from the additional murder of a Summer Gleeson, for which she was dubbed "the Hangman" by the press. She was additionally disowned by her father and turned Alberto into the heir of the Falcone Crime Family.
Time in Arkham[]
Sofia was originally set for trial, but as it is implied, her father pulled some strings behind the scenes and made her go to Arkham State Hospital for six months due to a "mental health probation" instead. In that time, she was approached by a fellow inmate who went by the name Magpie. Magpie would constantly snitch on Sofia to the higher-ups of the asylum in exchange for a powerful psychoactive substance Sofia would later come to call "Bliss".
For the next sixth months, she would be tortured by staff members and inmates alike, specifically Doctor Ventris, a corrupt doctor that would punish her via electroshock therapy. In one occasion, she would be assaulted by a patient named Abby who is implied to have been freed of her shackles by Ventris and tried to get her to admit she did the Hangman murders. Ventris would later arrange a second encounter between the two, where Abby would kill herself in front of Sofia and the staff.
After the six months had passed, Alberto would visit her to tell her that she didn't pass the probation and would thus have to spend ten years in Arkham. During her institutionalization, her only consistent visitor was Alberto, which was the only thing that kept her afloat in the endless torture that she endured from the staff and inmates alike.
Later, Magpie would slip up and reveal more information than she had to, revealing to Sofia that she was a snitch. Sofia would realize that she was doing it for the Bliss, coming to realize its power over people. Sofia slammed Magpie's head against the table, killing her. It's implied that Sofia would make a reputation for herself in Arkham afterwards.
She was released shortly after her father was murdered by the Riddler and she began quietly plotting to take over Gotham's drug trade by introducing Bliss alongside Alberto, who had inherited their father's criminal empire.
The Penguin[]
“
Am I crazy? Is it all in my head? Tell me. Tell me. Tell me that I'm... that I'm too emotional, and that I have an overactive imagination, and that I shouldn't take things so personally.
The day after Alberto goes missing, Sofia joins in a meeting between Oswald, the Falcone family's chief enforcer, and Johnny Viti, her father's underboss and acting leader of the family in the wake of Carmine's death. She watches as Oswald pitches Alberto's idea to sell newer, better drugs on the streets of Gotham City as his own, and she begins to suspect - correctly - that Oswald killed him.
After Viti rejects Oswald's idea, Sofia takes him to lunch and intimates that she knows that he had something to do with Alberto's disappearance, but then reassures him that she admires his ambition and that they are very much alike.
The following day, however, Sofia has Oswald kidnapped, and personally interrogates him about Alberto's disappearance while her men torture him. Before she gets the chance to kill him, however, Cobb's driver Victor Aguilar crashes Alberto's car, with Alberto's mutilated corpse inside, into the Falcone family mansion, as part of Oswald's plan to make the Falcones think that rival mob boss Salvatore Maroni killed him. Upon seeing her brother's body, Sofia screams in horror.
Luca Falcone is the brother of Carmine Falcone and uncle of his children, who became the new head of the Falcone Crime Syndicate after the death of his nephew, Alberto Falcone. Luca tries talking Sofia into leaving the family business for a quiet life in Italy instead, and Sofia pretends to be doing that, but instead plans to overthrow Luca and "other old men" from family leadership. Oz agrees to help her with that plan, although he has his own underlying agenda: to take control of the Falcone Crime Syndicate for himself.
Personality[]
Before being sent to Arkham, Sofia was the most innocent out of the Falcone family, having spent her days advocating for her fathers fundraisers and never being involved into the family business. She was affable, respectful, and caring about her family members before her unjust incarceration. She was even considerate of Oswalds feelings, before his eventual betrayal. However, when she meets Summer Gleeson, she learns about her father's killing of women and how it eerily resembled her mother's death. Eventually realizing her father for the monster that he is, she is very terrified to talk to the press about it. Unfortunately, after Oz informs on Sofia's meeting with Gleeson, her whole life comes crashing down as she is framed as "The Hangman" and wrongfully imprisoned in Arkham. To add insult to injury, the rest of her family members signed statements painting her as mentally unstable, turning her into a pariah. This betrayal and the trauma of being locked away into Arkham breaks her and she became a bigger threat then Carmine ever could.
When she leaves the Asylum, she's a lot more jaded, cynical, sarcastic, spiteful, and calculating, calmly analyzing everyone and everything around her. However, despite her calm demeanor, she is hiding a lot of anger from her time behind bars and is willing to kill and torture anyone who even considers crossing her. Having lost any love and respect she had for her father and family, she openly and subtly disrespects the wishes of her family members and voices her opinions whenever she gets the chance. After achieving her vengeance by killing all of the Falcones (excluding Johnny Viti and her niece), she feels great contentment from it, changing her last name to Gigante to honor her mother. Despite her hatred for her relatives, she is still capable of caring for members such as Alberto, who kept visiting her and tried to get her out of Arkham. When learning of his death at the hands of Oswald, she immediately seeks retaliation against him and everyone he loves.
Despite her negative reputation of a serial killer, Sofia is able to rally the troops to join her cause to take down Oswald Cobb and take over Gotham with her powerful presence. With her intuition and her ruthless determination, she's able to form her own crime family and go toe to toe with Oz's forces. However, after some self-reflection, she realized that she has put herself in that her father wanted. Now wanting to leave Gotham and start fresh, she continues her vendetta against Cobb and is willing to torture his mother to do it. When confronting him about his murder of his brothers, she's surprised how much Oswald blatantly denies it despite the fact that Frances may lose her fingers. At this point, she realizes just the kind of monster he is and now understands the depths of his evil. In the end, she failed in her revenge but managed to hurt Oz in more ways then one. Unfortunately, this led to her being re-imprisoned in Arkham.

“
That's what you wanted, right? To have my reputation precede me? You are so good at talking your way out of things. Even at the cost of someone else's life. Especially then, right? But my father isn't around anymore... to reward you with fancy suits, and stupid cars, and a club he lets you believe is yours. It's just you and me now, okay? So, I want you to think. I want you to really think... Am I crazy? Is it all in my head? Tell me, tell me. Tell me that I'm... that I'm too emotional, and that I have an overactive imagination, and that I shouldn't take things so... personally. But first... tell me he's alive.

“
I've had a lot of time to reflect. And I have to say... I was genuinely surprised at how many of you wrote letters telling the judge that I was mentally ill, like my mother. Not that the judge needed much convincing. My father saw to that. Still, I trusted you. I loved you. And yet, not one of you... tried to help me. Except for my brother, the man you all flew in to mourn. And you know, the real thorn in my side is that, unlike everyone here... I was innocent. I mean, Jesus Christ, Milos has a higher body count than I do. I know you're all anxious for me to leave. No one has been shy about that. I'd really hoped that it would be different. But I understand, I don't fit into this family anymore. So tomorrow, I'm starting a new life. For the first time, I have hope. To new beginnings. Cent'anni.
