~ Dojima, before ordering Lao Gui to shoot Makoto Makimura. |
Sohei Dojima is one of the overarching antagonists in the Yakuza Saga of the Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku, formerly known as Yakuza in the west) franchise.
He is the main antagonist of the prequel Yakuza 0, and one of the overarching antagonists of Yakuza and Yakuza 2 (as well as their remakes Kiwami and Kiwami 2).
He is the cruel and ruthless patriarch of the Dojima Family, the most powerful factor in the Tojo Clan during the events of Yakuza 0. He was the archenemy of Shintaro Kazama, the captain of the Dojima Family and patriarch of the Kazama Family, whom Dojima hated with burning passion. He's also the father of Daigo Dojima, who would later become the sixth chairman of the Tojo Clan in 2007.
He is voiced by Hisao Egawa.
Personality[]
Sohei Dojima is best described as a ruthless and cruel man, with a desire for power and a somewhat violet temper. Dojima was shown to have a vengeful side to him, as he ordered the extermination of the Jingweon Mafia, due to their crimes against his family. Dojima also seems to have a callous attitude towards life, as he was willing to murder anyone, including children, without any sense of remorse or regret for his deeds. in Yakuza 0, Dojima was willing to achieve his goals no matter the cost, as such, he allowed his three lieutenants to do whatever they needed to do so one of them could get the Empty Lot, like allowing Kuze to torture Tachibana, which led to his death or Shibusawa to do most of Dojima's dirty work for him, to which the patriarch praises him for.
Dojima also has some rather petty grudges towards people, as best seen with Shintaro, whom Dojima greatly hates with passion as he viewed him as a threat to his plans. This hatred even extended to Kiryu, who was also responsible for stopping Dojima's ambitions on becoming the Tojo Clan's new chairman. Because of this, he tried to rape Shintaro's foster daughter and Kiryu's love interest, Yumi Sawamura, mainly so he could spite them.
For all of his ruthlessness, Dojima proves him to be a weak and pathetic coward whenever things don't go to his plans, as best seen with his final confrontation with Majima, where he's incredibly nervous in Majima's presence, failing to shoot him. This suggests that he uses his lieutenants and major allies as his main muscles, and without them, he caves easily under peassure.
Dojima also had an adulterous side to him, as despite being married to his wife, Yaoyi, he repeatedly cheated on her. Despite this, Yaoyi still remained faithful to him and even tells Koji Shindo that he knew nothing about Dojima, suggesting that he did possesses some noble qualities back then, before becoming the malevolent power-hungry monster that he was.
Biography[]
Yakuza 0[]
In Yakuza 0, Dojima is still the patriarch of the Dojima family. The family is known to be the biggest provider to the Tojo Clan. Dojima plans to acquire a small area of land in Kamurocho referred to as the "empty lot" that he can use as leverage to secure his position as the next chairman of the Tojo Clan. When the Dojima family captain Shintaro Kazama is jailed, Sohei promises his three lieutenants (Daisaku Kuze, Hirako Awano and Keiji Shibusawa) that they will receive Kazama's position if they obtain the lot for him.
When Kiryu refuses to join the Dojima Family in its attempts to acquire the lot, Awano phones Dojima, requesting permission to send his men after Kiryu to extract information about the man who knows the owner of the Lot. Dojima approves this request.
In a plot twist it is revealed that the murder that took place in the empty lot which started the events of the game was committed by Dojima's personal assassin, Lao Gui, under his order. This was done as Kiryu had just beaten the man up and Dojima wanted to frame him for the murder and have Kazama be expelled from the Tojo Clan.
When Makoto Makimura, the owner of the empty lot comes to Dojima and offers him the empty lot in exchange for the heads of his three lieutenants Sohei refuses. He states that the only reason the empty lot needs to be purchased is so the Kamurocho Revitalization Project can go forward without its owner causing legal trouble, so as long as that doesn't happen he's fine with the situation. To prevent it from happening, he instructs Lao Gui to shoot Makoto. Unknown to Dojima, Gui secretly did not shoot her with the intention of killing.
Later in the game, Goro Majima bursts into the Dojima Family HQ, defeating Dojima's goons in combat. He then bursts into Dojima's office to kill him for the suffering he has induced upon Makoto. Dojima sends out Lao Gui to kill Majima but Majima manages to defeat Gui. Fearful, Dojima quickly takes out a gun and tries to shoot Majima but misses. Sera then enters the room and shoots Dojima's hand, making him drop the gun. Sera persuades Majima not to kill Dojima or Lao Gui and takes the latter hostage as his testimony could "end Dojima overnight" and he plans to use that to blackmail Dojima into helping him become the new chairman.
At the end of the game when the acting chairman announces that Sera will take over as the chairman of the Tojo Clan Dojima angrily clenches his fist.
Yakuza[]
At the start of the first Yakuza game (and its remake, Yakuza Kiwami) Sohei Dojima still serves as the patriarch of the Dojima family, however, it is made clear that Kazama has more or less all authority over it. Dojima is stated by Akira Nishikiyama to boast a lot about his "glory days" (before Kazama took control of the family).
Sohei abducts Yumi, a close friend of Kiryu and Nishiki, and begins raping her. However, as this is going on, Nishiki enters the room and upon seeing this, shoots Dojima several times. Sohei then bleeds out and dies.
Yakuza 2[]
Sohei is seen in flashbacks meeting with Shintaro Kazama and Futoshi Shimano (who at the time worked for him) and giving them orders to invade the base of the Jingweon mafia and kill all the members of it. Kazama attempts to convince Sohei to allow them to not kill every single one of them and Sohei responds that while he understands Kazama's concerns he believes wiping out the Jingweon is the only way to prevent the destruction of the Dojima Family.
Sohei's wife, Yayoi, reveals that Sohei used to sleep around while he was alive. Despite this, she still remained loyal to him.
