Sohma Maid is a supporting antagonist in the manga and anime series Fruits Basket.

She is voiced by Hitomi Shogawa in the Japanese version and Linda Leonard in the English version.

Appearance

She's a woman in her early-mid 50's. She had green for her eye color and grey hair with bun for hair style. She was always seen in a kimono.

Personality

The Sohma maid acts as the sort of mouthpiece and proselytizer of the Sohma bond. It seems to be something she truly believes in, rather than is simply supporting because of money or power she is being granted.

She has been indoctrinated in the beliefs the Sohma family, who as a whole try to view the Chinese Zodiacs bond as sacred. Akito as both the head of the family and as God is especially sacred. The way the Sohma work - the view of the bond, Akito’s authority, the treatment of the Cat.

Biography

The Sohma Maid was born and raised in the Sohma family's estate. It is likely that the Sohma have kept the same families of maids for many generations, in order to maintain the family secret and bonds.

She attends to Akito Sohma and had largely raised her after Akira passed. She's also strongly implied to have previously raised Akira himself.

After Akira's death, wanting to comfort Akito, proceeded to give her an empty box, claiming that Akira's spirit was inside it, and that she had wanted only Akito to receive such a special gift. (The same maid later claimed, in chapter 117, that the box was of course empty, and only given to Akito to help her through such a stressful time, adding that Akito should have well known that her father's spirit wasn't really inside the box.)

After the Sohma curse is broken, Akito tries to get her to “move on” with everyone else but she responds that she is too old now, and she can’t change as easily as them, who are “young”. In the second anime, she explains almost tearfully that this is because she was raised by the people of the Sohma clan, so she does not know how to live otherwise.
