The solanogen-based aliens are the main antagonists of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Schisms". This remains their only on-screen appearance.
History[]
The solanogen-based aliens existed in a dimension inside subspace. They were attracted to the Enterprise by an abnormal sensor signal. Unable to survive in the Enterprise's dimension, they found it easier to draw people into their own. They created a bubble there in which people from the other dimension could survive and abducted a number of Enterprise personnel in their sleep, experimenting on them, with them believing they had dreamed the experience. The aliens' speech was incomprehensible to them, sounding like a series of clicking noises.
As the aliens grew bolder, they began creating a bubble of their own dimension aboard the Enterprise in the hope of crossing over. They killed Lieutenant Hagler, one of the crewmembers they had abducted, by turning his blood to acid. Commander Riker, a frequent victim of the abductions, allowed himself to be abducted again but remain conscious so the Enterprise crew could track him. This allowed them to seal the rift between the dimensions. Riker managed to get himself and the aliens' other prisoner, Ensign Rager, back through the rift before it closed, although the aliens were also able to send a probe through.
Both Star Trek Online and the novel Sight Unseen name them as the Solanae. The latter sees Riker and Rager encountering them again years later while crewmembers on the USS Titan, discovering their dimension is collapsing and they have been abducting and experimenting on people as the prelude to a conquest. Their attempt to send a ship full of biogenic weapons through is thwarted and they are left to their fate.
