“ | Ok. What kind of American are you? | „ |
~ His response to Joel pleading for his and his allies' lives, explaining they're American; his most infamous quote. |
The unnamed soldier, also known as the Militiaman by fans, is the secondary antagonist of the 2024 thriller film Civil War.
He is a xenophobic militiaman from the US military who has a prejudice toward Americans that are from the Western Front, as well as anyone who's from another country. As such, he and his militia that he formed murder anyone crossing their bases that he deemed was "not American" with their victims being piled up in a mass grave.
He was portrayed by an uncredited Jesse Plemons, who also played Todd Alquist in the Breaking Bad franchise, Robert Daly in Black Mirror and Prince Joachim in Jungle Cruise.
Biography[]
The Militiaman was first seen when the four main protagonists (Lee, Sammy, Joel, and Jesse) would end up crossing paths with him during their journey to confront The President with the Western Forces themselves.
While driving, the protagonists encounter two other reporters they recognize: Tony and Bohai. It is then both Tony and Jessie jokingly trade cars, but then Bohai and Jessie get caught by militants who are burying their victims in a large pit - with the Militiaman himself leading the group. He prepares to execute Jesse and Bohai when the others arrive just in time, with Joel intervening and then pleading with the Militiaman to release their associates.
But then the Militiaman soon begins to display his xenophobic and ruthless nature by shooting Bohai dead in front of everyone. Joel then fearfully claims they're all Americans, which leads the Militiaman to inquiry what kind of American they are. He seems impressed when Jessie and Lee answer they're they are from, before telling Joel about it. The Militiaman then turns his attention to Tony and shoots him dead when the latter says he is from Hong Kong.
After witnessing the deaths of both Bohai and Tony respectively, the others begin fearing for their lives and pleading with the Militiaman as he starts becoming irritated and prepares to kill them all. But just then Sammy saves the group by driving the car at the Militiaman and his companion, killing them in the process. The protagonists quickly flee, but another one shoots him as they escape; this consequently results in Sammy being mortally wounded and later dying of his injuries.
