Cyrus Gold, better known as Solomon Grundy, is a major antagonist in the DC Animated Universe. Grundy was a simple minded zombie brute serving as the muscle of whatever supervillain group he was apart to combat the Justice League's strongest members, especially Superman.

He was mainly voiced by Mark Hamill, who also voiced the Joker, Ferris Boyle, the Trickster, and Jordan Pryce in the same universe, Tony Zucco in The Batman, the Hobgoblin in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Darth Bane in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In the Justice League Unlimited episode "Wake The Dead" he was voiced by Bruce Timm.

Origin[]

Cyrus Gold was a ruthless 1920s gangster whose body was cursed and dumped in a swamp after being brutally executed by his own men. However, Gold would rise from the dead decades later as a muscular zombie-like being unaware of his previous life, taking the name Solomon Grundy, condemned to wonder the Earth for eternity, unknowingly searching for his lost soul.

Justice League[]

Solomon Grundy joined Lex Luthor's Injustice Gang to help eliminate the Justice League. When Luthor plays security footage of Batman seducing Cheetah, Luthor ordered Grundy to take her away as punishment for her alleged betrayal. Later, Grundy fought Superman and was apprehended with his allies when the Justice League defeated the criminal group.

When Dr. Fate gathered a team to tackle an interdimensional cosmic threat known as Ichthultu that needed specific skills, so despite his criminal history, Solomon Grundy was recruited with Hawkgirl, Aquaman, and Fate himself. Grundy and Hawkgirl establish an unlikely friendship, with him even giving her an affectionate nickname "Bird Nose."

After Grundy successfully entered Ichthultu's bowels and killed a monster inside, he was rendered immobilized. Hawkgirl followed him and finished Grundy's job for him, killing Ichthultu with a strike from her magic-disrupting Nth metal mace. Grundy peacefully died in her arms shortly afterwards. However, she couldn't understand why he was happy at the end, to which Aquaman replied that it was faith.

Justice League Unlimited[]

Some time after the failed Thanagarian invasion of Earth, a dark ritual that went wrong summoned Solomon Grundy back to the mortal coil, however, he returned mindless and went on a savage rampage, destroying everything and everyone in his path. Even the greatest powers in the world like Superman, Dr. Fate, and the super powered android Amazo couldn't stop Grundy. Therefore, Hawkgirl (now just known by her real name Shayera) reentered superheroics to face her undead friend, since her magic-nullifying mace was the only thing that could stop him. Shayera reluctantly battled Grundy, ending up in the sewers. Upon seeing that the creature had no mind, or perhaps soul, she sadly mercy kills him with her mace.

Trivia[]

In the Batman Beyond reality, Grundy resurfaces in the future Metropolis as a powerful crime boss known as Mr. Stone operating out of a nightclub called Vanity. He is offered nanotechnology stolen from GNX's Supercop program by Lex Luthor's daughter, Lucinda Luthor.
In the animated series Challenge of the Super Friends, Grundy was a member of the Legion of Doom. The same thing never happened on Justice League Unlimited because he died thrice before the Legion even formed.
