~ The flavor text during the fight against Spamton NEO.

Someone is the secondary antagonist of the 2018 indie video game Deltarune. They are an unknown, enigmatic entity which is responsible for driving both Jevil and Spamton G. Spamton insane and empowering them with knowledge that gave them awareness of their world.

Biography[]

Chapter 1[]

Before the events of Chapter 1, the Someone crossed paths with Jevil, the Court Jester of the Card Kingdom. They told him the truth about his world, which caused him to go insane and view everyone as participants in a game. Eventually, his mind started viewing murder itself as just another game. This, alongside his already nonsensical ramblings, caused the four kings to order Seam, the Court Magician, to imprison Jevil. After his imprisonment, Seam takes Jevil's words into their heart and started having a darker view of their world.

Once Jevil is defeated, Seam explains to the player their and Jevil's backstory.

Chapter 2[]

In the Cyber World, a down-on-his-luck salesman by the name of Spamton G. Spamton was desperate to gain success and become a big shot. At some point, he got himself a telephone and started calling people through it. Eventually, he either found or was found by a person that made his sales skyrocket to the point he got his own room in the mansion of the Queen herself. This caused his former friends, the Addisons, to abandon him out of envy at his success. Spamton was on the phone all the time, getting numerous TV deals, cars and commercials. One day, however, his benefactor disappeared, and with it his empire. The day of his eviction from the mansion, he got one last phone call, which caused him to escape in the middle of the conversation. One of his Addison friends visited him on the day of eviction to check up on him, and found his phone, emitting garbage noise from the other end.

By present day, Spamton is homeless and living in a dumpster, desperate to sneak into the mansion's basement so he could fuse himself with the powerful machine hidden in it, believing it would help free himself from the entity controlling him, reach a place he calls Heaven, and get revenge on everyone that ever wronged him. If encountered in his shop, Spamton shows that, unlike Jevil, the Someone still uses and silences him whenever he tries to say something secret.

If the player decides to complete his sidequest, Spamton succeeds in merging with the machine and become Spamton NEO, only to find out the Someone's control over him is even bigger then beforehand, being the entity's literal puppet, held up by strings. He attempts to kill Kris and steal their SOUL to free himself, but is stopped by the human's friends. In the ensuing battle, the Someone intervenes in the middle of it when Spamton asks Kris "Did you wanna be...", but is stopped by the Someone calling him, and then attacking him with his own bullets. If the player decides to spare Spamton by cutting his strings, it's revealed he can't live without the Someone's influence due to simply collapsing onto the ground, lifeless, once the final wire is cut.

After Spamton is defeated, the player can backtrack to his shop to find the Addisons mourning him and explaining his backstory.

Quotes[]

One day, he met a strange someone... and since then, he began to change. He started saying bizarre things that didn't completely make sense - but didn't completely not make sense, either. Soon, he began to see the world as a game, and everyone as its participants.
~ Seam about Jevil's fall to insanity.
Somehow, he made the right phone call, and found someone. Or, was he... found BY someone? They must have been helping him, because suddenly, he was on the phone all the time. Suddenly, he got really good at his job. The clicks started piling up.
~ The Addisons about Spamton's rise to fame.
But then things started to crack. It seems like whatever was helping him... disappeared. His sales dropped to zero, and everything came crashing down. The day he was to be evicted from the Queen's mansion, I went to his room to check on him... but he wasn't there. There was only a phone hanging off the handle. He must've left in the middle of a conversation, because I could still hear someone on the other end. But when I put the receiver to my ear... there was nothing but garbage noise.
~ The Addisons on Spamton's fall from grace.
SPEAKING OF [[Communion]]... KRIS, DID YOU KNOW THAT THE KNIGHT... No, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to -- TOO MANY EXCESS VACATION DAYS?? TAKE A GOD DAMN VACATION STRAIGHT TO HELL
~ Someone preventing Spamton from revealing crucial information about the Knight.
WHAT ARE THESE STRINGS!? WHY AM I NOT [BIG] ENOUGH!? It's still DARK... SO DARK!
~ Spamton NEO after noticing the Someone's control over him.
GO AHEAD AND [Scream] INTO THE [Receiver]. THE [Voice] RUNS OUT EVENTUALLY. YOUR [Voice] THEIR [Voice]. UNTIL YOU REALIZE YOU ARE ALL ALONE. THERE WILL BE NO MORE [Miracles] NO MORE [Magic]. YOU LOST IT WHEN YOU TRIED TO SEE TOO FAR.... YOU LOST IT...
~ Spamton NEO about his benefactor leaving him while projecting onto Kris.

Trivia[]

  • It's been heavily speculated by fans that the Someone is W.D. Gaster, a mysterious entity and previous Royal Scientist from Undertale who has heavy connections to Deltarune.
  • It's possible the Someone is the same person as the Knight, which would explain why the former silences Spamton when he's about to reveal a secret about the latter.
  • It's implied that the Someone is the same type of "big", godlike being that Spamton wishes to be, given that he wants himself and Kris to be "THE ONES MAKING THE [Calls]".
  • It's heavily implied that the Someone forcibly transformed Spamton into the ventriloquist dummy he is now and enslaved him with "visions of glory".
  • It's been heavily speculated by some that the someone who helped Spamton hit it big and the entity that drove him insane are two separate beings. This is supported by the fact the final phone call - the one from the Someone - happened at least a few days after Spamton's helper disappeared. The Someone helping Spamton become a big shot and then driving him insane also wouldn't make sense given how they contacted Jevil, with Spamton already being vulnerable by the time of the first phone call, with the rise of glory being an unnecessary middle step.
  • It's implied Spamton's helper, who themself might be the Someone, cut contact with Spamton because he tried to "see too far".
  • Before the release of the $pamton Sweepstakes! charity event, which revealed some heavy lore about Spamton, it's been speculated that the someone who made him hit it big and/or drove him insane was an individual called Mike who, according to Spamton himself, is apparently a criminal and past friend who shouldn't be trusted. It also frequently went hand-in-hand with the theory that Mike will be the main antagonist of Chapter 3 (and under many interpretations, the TV Darkner from the end of Chapter 2), the same way Jevil mentioned Queen, Chapter 2's big bad, in Chapter 1.
    • That said, the Sweepstakes actually showed Mike is a friend of Spamton's, explicitly not the TV Darkner, and the one person Spamton won't harm in his revenge spree, to the point of defending him after being asked about him. Spamton accusing Mike of being a criminal is just poor wording, with the most likely option being that Mike is being slandered on TV by the untrustworthy criminal. Following these revelations, many fans believed that Mike was Spamton's original helper who got cut off, thus allowing the Someone to reach him, or just isn't related to his rise to glory in any way and is simply a close friend he met along the way.
  • The Sweepstakes also introduced a character called Tenna, who is all but outright confirmed to be the true identity of the TV Darkner and is explicitly stated to be Spamton's enemy with there being an entire page about nothing but him cursing Tenna and swearing revenge, to the point of claiming "everything is his fault". Tenna also has a crew that's seemingly hunting for Mike and is heavily implied to be the true "criminal" mentioned by Spamton, with him having actually been spreading lies about Mike on TV. It's unknown what this means, but among various interpretations, two remain most likely; either Mike was Spamton's helper and Tenna separated the two for unknown reasons, or it's Tenna who helped Spamton reach glory only to abandon him once he stopped being useful (or, if one would see him in a more positive light, when his Light World form was plugged off). The latter would explain why Spamton had "big TV deals" during his big shot days or why he claims he doesn't need Tenna anymore; because while he might have been depended on him to be a big shot, in his new goal of achieving freedom, he's no longer needed.
    • That said, both implications don't clear up the problem of Spamton viewing his helper as a godlike entity, with him desiring to reach their level. It's possible he just never learned his helper and the Someone were different people, and thus assumes that his helper was a powerful entity and not just a Darkner like him. That said, this is all under the assumption that his helper and the Someone are different people, which is not confirmed.
