Song So Mi, better known as Songbird, is the main antagonist of the 2023 video game expansion Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

She is an agent of the Federal Intelligence Agency and the right hand of NUSA president Rosalind Myers. Due to her losing her identity due to activities beyond the Blackwall, Songbird engineers a plan to retrieve Cynosure hidden in Night City's Dogtown and escape to the Moon. Songbird also enlists the mercenary V to help her.

She is voiced by Minji Chang.

Biography[]

Growing up in Brooklyn, Song So Mi became a netrunner at the age of 13. She often hacked into companies as a mercenary, even claiming to have once breached a Biotechnica facility. Despite having friends and a supportive environment, So Mi drove many of them away due to her behavior. After hacking into a Militech facility, So Mi caught the attention of both the NUSA and Netwatch. She reluctantly joined the FIA in order to protect her friends from both organizations. She trained under Solomon Reed and operated in Night City during Reunification War in operations against Arasaka. When the war ended, she was forced to betray Reed to Arasaka in order to escape.

So Mi continued to operate, now under the direct command of President Rosalind Myers. Under her orders, Songbird constantly travelled beyond the Blackwall to recover data lost during the Fourth Corporate War. During this time, Songbird began replacing most of her body with Cyberware, including the back of her skull. So Mi also lost memories due to these excursions and encounters with multiple rogue AIs. These circumstances eventually took their toll and, by 2077, she was slowly losing her mind to the AIs she'd encountered beyond the Blackwall.

Songbird eventually learned that BARGHEST leader Col. Kurt Hansen had recovered a neural matrix containing Cynosure, a program capable of removing and trapping AIs. Believing capable of curing her, she worked with Hansen on a plan to draw Space Force One into Dogtown's range and shoot it down. However, Songbird planned to help Myers escape, possibly anticipating that Hansen would not honor their agreement.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty[]

Songbird contacts the mercenary V through the Relic, as it is the only device she can hack into due to i. She enlists their help by claiming she can help cure them of their own condition: having their consciousness overwritten with the engram of Johnny Silverhand. As Space Force One crashes, she guides V into Dogtown and towards Myers. During the escape, Songbird is captured and taken into Hansen's custody. Despite their deal to hand over Myers in return for Cynosure, Songbird learns that Hansen only intends to keep her in his possession not only to recover the program successfully, but also to blackmail the NUSA with her and Myers' activities.

If V was able to successfully extract Myers, they, Solomon Reed and netrunner Slider use the Relic to make contact with Songbird due to the trace left in it. Appearing to V via the Relic, she reveals that she is in Hansen's imprisonment and asks to meet her at the Black Sapphire. Songbird's connection to the Blackwall also causes Slider's death. Songbird contacts V when they and Reed infiltrate a party at the Black Sapphire. During the conversation, she reveals the discovery of the Neural Matrix and discloses that it can be used to cure both her and V's conditions. She leaves after the meeting is interrupted by Hansen, who has her escorted from the party. After the meeting, Reed deduces that Songbird was the informant who helped crash Space Force One.

Songbird later contacts V and arranges for a meeting, which she achieves by projecting herself through the Relic. She reveals that Myers intends to keep her imprisoned and continue the excursions beyond the Blackwall. Songbird asks V to help her escape, falsely promising to use Cynosure to cure both of them. Songbird later meets V and FIA agent Alex when they infiltrate Hansen's base disguised as two netrunners. She and V recover the neural matrix containing Cynosure, during which she reveals her plan to escape but disregards the casualties from its execution. V has the choice to either help Songbird escape or activating a device given to them by Reed to incapacitate her:

If V decides to betray Reed, Songbird continues with her plan with V's help. After escaping Dogtown, she is able to arrange for transportation to the Moon through a mysterious man. Songbird and V infiltrate the Moro Rock Space Port and fight against NUSA soldiers sent to recapture her. During it, Songbird unleashes the power of the Blackwall to take out multiple NUSA agents and soldiers. As they make it to the shuttle, a weakened So Mi regretfully reveals to V that the Neural Matrix will only work on one person and that she intends to use it on herself. As they reach the shuttle, V can either help her escape, killing Reed in the process, or betray her to the FIA. If the former is chosen, V later receives a postcard from So Mi confirming she's escaped and thanking them for their help. If they handed her to the NUSA, she is presumably kept by Myers to continue excursions beyond the Blackwall, with Reed noting two years later that he has not seen her since they took her into custody.

If V betrays her, Songbird survives the trap and begins to succumb to the Blackwall's influence. She alerts Hansen to V and Alex's identities, leading to the latter's death, then escapes whilst V fights the BARGHEST and Hansen, but is captured by MaxTac. After V and Reed ambush the convoy escorting her, Songbird escapes and flees to an abandoned Militech facility where Cynosure was developed, killing multiple people along the way. Fleeing into the heart of the facility, she discovers V in pursuit and takes control of a robot to keep them away from her. However, it quickly falls under the AI's control and hunts the mercenary. Eventually, So Mi regains and deactivates the robot, but is rendered weak due to the experience. When V arrives, she begs them to kill her, knowing Myers intends to continue her activities and strip her of her freewill. Depending on V's decision, they can either comply or refuse and hand her over to Reed when he arrives. Regardless of what is chosen, So Mi or her remains are handed to Myers. If she was kept alive, she is presumably kept by Myers to continue excursions beyond the Blackwall, with Reed noting two years later that he has not seen her since they took her into custody.
