General Cao! We have captured Lu Bu alive! General, please enter the city!
~ Song Xian to Cao Cao after betraying Lu Bu.

Song Xian is a minor antagonist in the fourteenth century Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms and it's many adaptations. He is a general serving Dong Zhuo, Lu Bu, and Cao Cao based on the real-life Chinese warrior of the same name.

Biography[]

Song Xiang was a military officer serving the tyrant Dong Zhuo. When Dong Zhuo was slain by Lu Bu in 192 AD, he followed Lu Bu quickly becoming one of this top generals only behind the likes of Gao Shun, and Zhang Liao. He was present during Lu Bu's invasion of Cao Cao's base in Yanzhou in 194. He later was forced to retreat to Xu Province along with his master and ally with Liu Bei.

Song Xian was later sent as an escort along with Wei Xu when Lu Bu agreed to marry his daughter, Lu Lingqi, to Yuan Shu's son, Yuan Yao. He was also one of the generals who attacked Yingchuan and Runan, after Lu Bu discovered that Liu Bei was plotting against him with Cao Cao. Facing both Cao Cao's and Liu Bei's forces they retreated to the city of Xia Pi. When one of Lu Bu's top generals named Hou Cheng got drunk following a victory, going against Lu Bu's strict orders to not drink wine or celebrate, he was put to execution with Song Xian and other generals pleading to Lu Bu to forgive him, thus calling of the execution and only punishing him with 50 lashes.

One day, Cao Cao's men shot an arrow with a letter, saying that whoever manages to capture Lu Bu would be rewarded. The letter was recovered by Song Xian and some other generals who started to read it loudly. Lu Bu, heard them thinking they wanted to captured him and ordered them to be punished even though they told him that they only red the message. After that, they realized that they couldn't serve Lu Bu anymore, accusing him for not caring for his generals and only listening to his wife. Song Xian, Wei Xu, Hou Cheng and some other soldiers tied Lu Bu while he was sleeping and surrendered to Cao Cao even throwing Lu Bu's iconic halberd to him in order for him to be convinced that the capture and surrender were real.

They also captured Lu Bu's top adviser, Chen Gong. When Lu Bu told them that he treated them well and asked them why did they betray him, Song Xian replied "Lu Bu, you have Red Hare, who crosses waters like running on dry land, you also have Diao Chan who you value more than the lives of your troops, as a commander how can you be like this and still say that you treat us well?" to which Lu Bu didn't reply back. Then they personally carried Lu Bu to Cao Cao who ordered his execution. Song Xian then became a general in Cao Cao's army and he soon fought against Yuan Shao's forces in the Battle of Guandu. That was his last battle though, as he was killed in action by one of Yuan Shao's two top generals Yan Liang. Historically, it is unknown what happened to him following Lu Bu's execution.

Other Media[]

Song Xian appears in the video-game series Dynasty Warriors. He also has a minor role in the 2010 TV series Three Kingdoms, where he appears as a minor antagonist (specifically being a major antagonist in episodes 14, 17-18) and the most vocal of Lu Bu's men. He is portrayed by Da Youwei.
