Songbird is the secondary antagonist of the 2013 action-adventure video game BioShock Infinite and a minor character in its story DLC Burial at Sea - Episode 2.
He is a 30-foot tall mechanical bird-like creature created by Jeremiah Fink that is both highly revered and feared by the civilian populace of the flying city of Columbia. He enforces Zachary Hale Comstock's will to keep Elizabeth imprisoned within her tower at Monument Island, and guards it against all potential intruders. When Elizabeth is freed by Booker DeWitt during Infinite's events, Songbird becomes determined to recapture her at all costs.
Biography[]
Origins[]
Songbird was created by Fink Manufacturing at Finkton in 1896; Jeremiah Fink having plagiarized the concept and design of a mechanical guardian from Yi Suchong's Big Daddies in Rapture by spying them through a Tear. After multiple failed attempts to establish a pairbond both through experimentation with animals and psychological indoctrination performed on a prototype of Songbird, the finished version of the creature escaped from Fink's laboratories and crashed into Monument Tower. There, the infant Elizabeth saved the wounded Songbird's life by reattaching his breathing tube, and an emotional bond between the two was born. Songbird became Monument Island's sentinel, and also a feared and well-known figure by Columbia's citizens, with Comstock using Songbird in his propaganda and merchandise of him even being sold by multiple Columbian businesses.
Elizabeth and Songbird were initially inseparable, with the creature being her only friend, bringing her toys, books, and even feeding her. However, as Elizabeth grew older and started to yearn for freedom and to see the outside world, she began to resent Songbird and came to realize that he was not so much her protector as he was her captor instead, then started plotting her escape by learning the art of lockpicking and trying to control her Tear-creating powers, which were being limited by the tower's Siphon. Unaware to Elizabeth, Comstock remotely controlled Songbird with statues of himself located at key places, which were programmed with a musical tune that, when played, summoned Songbird to the statue's vicinity.
BioShock Infinite[]
As soon as Booker reaches Elizabeth at Monument Island after fighting his way across Columbia when he is exposed as the "False Shepherd", Songbird becomes a major threat and impediment to the pair's journey. A whistler statue summons him to Elizabeth's room and her lack of response as she uses a key brought by Booker to open a door for them to escape alerts him to the presence of an intruder. Songbird begins to tear Monument Tower apart in an attempt to reach Elizabeth and Booker, destroying the elevator in the process. With their only means of escape gone, Booker and Elizabeth head upward but Songbird brings the whole structure down, making Booker and Elizabeth safely fall into the artificial ocean of Battleship Bay. Songbird attempts to snatch Booker from the waters, but just a few feet submerged into them begins to hurt him and he is forced to retreat.
Despite his injuries, Songbird continues his search for Booker and Elizabeth. When the pair took the sky in one of Comstock's airship, Songbird was called and pursued them, causing the airship to crash. Afterwards, Booker and Elizabeth explore inside Comstock's House of Congress. There Songbird is called again and thoroughly searches the building from the outside. Once he goes away, Elizabeth tries to make Booker promise that he will not let Songbird take her back, even if it means to kill her.
When Booker and Elizabeth are about to take the elevator platform to Comstock's headquarters, Songbird emerges, attacks Booker, and throws him across through the window. Furious believing that Booker intends to steal Elizabeth, Songbird tries to kill Booker until Elizabeth intervenes and tells Songbird that she will go back to what's left of the tower. During the final battle, after Booker killed Comstock, the Vox Populi make their final all-out assault on Comstock's mothership.
Overwhelmed by their forces, Elizabeth decides to use the whistle that Comstock was using to call Songbird from a statue to assist Booker and Elizabeth to take down the Vox Populi's airships. After they successfully managed to make the Vox fleet retreat, Booker and Elizabeth decide to use Songbird to tear down the tower that Elizabeth was trapped in, realizing it was also being used as a Siphon to hold off her powers. Booker then makes one last whistle to Songbird and the creature destroys the tower, also restoring her powers in the process.
However, the Shockwave of the effects caused Booker to drop the whistle and Songbird, freed from its control, goes after Booker and Elizabeth one last time until the latter uses her rift powers to transport all three of them to Rapture. There, Booker and Elizabeth see Songbird drown until he succumbs to the water pressure and sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
Burial at Sea[]
While Songbird doesn't appear in the dlc, his sounds can still be heard and an old-style film shows the Origin of how he imprinted with Elizabeth.
Appearance[]
Songbird has an appearance similar to that of a giant humanoid mechanical avian bird-like creature equipped with large wings and claws on each hand.
