Sopona is a deity found in the Yoruba religions of Nigeria, while a being of worship Sopona was also notable as a plague-god, being specifically known as the god of smallpox and feared due to his temper.

Biography[]

according to Yoruba belief Sopona was a spirit who held control over disease (most notably smallpox) and was to be worshipped in order to appease his divine wrath, it was believed that if angered Sopona would manifest his displeasure by striking mortals with disease and he could also bestow such powers upon his priests, who tended to his shrines.

These priests were thus held in great reverence and were considered among the few who could keep Sopona's wrath in check - when the British Empire began to explore the region they suspected that the priests were using the fear of Sopona to deliberately spread smallpox (via applying the skin scrapings of infected smallpox victims), this would lead to the outlawing of Sopona worship in 1907 but the figure remains active in some circles regardless of this.
